Gambling at Port Merrick? And purchase of jewelry from clothing store

  • The Port Merrick looks AWESOME, but also unfortunately, vacant.

In the tavern, you can "play dice" against another player, for gold you own, you can "bet" and win and loose (they play a dice game in Pirates of the Caribbean).

This would need some code, that allows the players to agree to enter in the game, perhaps both throwing down "daggers" on the table, just as when they vote on emissary flags.

Then they need to be able to select and agree on how much to play for, have fun coding that. Then anyone playing sits down at the table in the tavern, while they are playing.
Then roll the 25 dice, highest win, or introduce other games.

You could allow people to put gold in a pot from purchasing bags of it from the bank at Port Merrick, or to even bet with jewelry.
    Gold purchasing idea here

One thing that seems to be missing from the game is the ability to buy and wear rings, imagine if a user was out of gold, but permitted in the game to enter their ring into the "pot." I lost, and the ring disappeared from my hand and appeared on the other guy's hand.

Now the player who one the ring could keep the ring, or sell it, and maybe buy a different one, who knows (sell and buy rings and jewelry at clothing store?).
After dice, they could introduce other games.

I could now envision many ships parked at Port Merrick's many docks, so users could meet in the huge tavern.

I also wish their were NPC's with AI walking around at the port. It is HUGE, and beautiful, but seems like a ghost town.

  • "...for gold you own,..."

  • @admiralcorporal

Including gambling even if it's all fake gold will change the game's rating.

    No.

  • What about buying Jewelry from the Clothing store?

  • @admiralcorporal Necklaces might be difficult to see on some pirates, due to clipping/interfering with shirts, jackets, etc. Also I don't think they can do individual rings on separate fingers, let alone having to create a game of some sort, rules, what to wager, what it's worth, etc. (don't even want to imagine the coding nightmare that would be), and again, so much work and time put into a tiny cosmetic that's hardly visible to others, I don't know if that's a road they'd be willing to go down.

  • Question: if there are many ships (how you described it) parked at Port Merrick, what's to stop someone from boarding your ship and stealing your supplies? Or sinking you?

    No.

    It wont change the rating.
Real money gambling is already in the game (IPG slot machine).

  • @alienmagi You're right. Plus, they already have the consumption of grog.

  • The only location that doens't seem like a ghost town is the scumm bar, they do need to add more npc's to all areas and maybe add movement, have them walk around going about their business which by now i don't know why this is not in the game, but maybe someday.

  • @admiralcorporal gambling might never happen without the ESRB changing the games rating from T to M but I'd love to see more things like jewelry added as something else pirates could wear

  • I don’t understand the arguments over gambling in game. In hourglass, if you choose to go into another match without turning in your hourglass value this is gambling. If you win, you get more value on turn-in while losing the match takes away your previous glass value. How is this any different than going through the next round of betting or next hand of poker?

Do you consider it different because you don’t give the value to the other player on losing? It’s simply lost to oblivion. I’d still say it fits the definition of gambling though.

Gambling= the betting or staking of something of value, with consciousness of risk and hope of gain, on the outcome of a game

I’m just curious on how this never gets brought up.

  • @hawkeye99 I guess the entire game is actually based on gambling BUT it's not obvious and it's not addictive to some like a card game with gambling would be where you feel the next one is the good one so you keep going.
So it's not as black and white as some people might think to just put gambling in the game, but for me it would be fun.

  • @hawkeye99 this is not “gambling”.

There are strict laws in most countries what constitutes gambling and this extends into the rating of a game that promotes these practises within. Your stretched definition does not fall into criteria to up the game’s rating, but the moment you add in a system where players are able to stake their in game currency for the possibility of better rewards, that’s gambling! A big no no.

  • @tesiccl I’m not advocating for the games rating to go up or other forms of gambling to be added into the game. I just wanted to point out something I hadn’t seen discussed yet. We have people calling the pirate generator “gambling that exists in game” but I’ve never seen this more obvious form pointed out. I also didn’t stretch a definition, I copied it off the first page of a Google search lol. I didn’t like the very top option that came up because it included the word random. I believe I went with Brittanica’s definition. I think most people accept there is betting/gambling on events that aren’t random (horse races, sports). I do persist it fits to say that you’re betting/wagering hourglass value on your next victory.

Really have no clue about the laws. Would have found it genuinely interesting had you told me I was wrong with a few more facts 😉

  • RNG is not gambling unless you're paying real world money for it, or using it to exchange for something in most countries. The USA actually has less strict rules on what constitutes "gambling" btw.

I'm not sure the UK laws on it but I do know if they were to add any form of it, it would require a ratings change so we will most likely not ever see this kind of feature.

  • Ok so what if they were to put card games or other mini games WITHOUT the gambling?
Would that be a good idea?
This would seem kinda pointless if you don't have nothing to win or loose, but they could maybe have something like the more streaks you win in a card game the more a level of some sort rises and then if you opt to quit you can cash out on the streaks just like we do hourglass or keep going.
So you are not actually betting any of your gold and losing it, just gaining more the more you win.

Comments like this are why I love Internet forums. Reading everything and advancing the conversation. Well done!

It makes me wonder if we have “circumvented” the gambling rules. That’s a joke for triheadedmonkey if he remembers 😉

  • @hawkeye99 you asked for evidence, I gave you it. If you don’t read that, then that’s on you buddy.

    More evidence from Rare staff:

Gambling - This would affect the age rating.

Then what about the ACTUAL pirate game you're playing?

Like, next to fighting for the ESRB/PEGI rating to not change, you're talking about doing an activity that takes players OUT of the main game loop, in servers that can hold up to 17 players, and 6 ships at a time.

You want to reduce in-game server activity because you haven't roleplayed a pirate in the tavern enough?

You can argue about logistics, laws, and reasoning, but despite how "boring" everything seems with the sailing and skeleton slaying, you cannot deny that this game is actually a lot more kinetic that you can assume, and to believe tavern minigames are the way to go for this partially functional fantasy pirate game that has an entire world for you to explore and new stories to forge, is insanely delusional, and what I'd argue is a sign of creative burnout more than anything.

If you want to roleplay a mischievous cur sitting in a tavern challenging pirates to minigames, you can feel free to larp as one at your nearest convention, NOT in the kinetic adventuring game that provides a lot more entertaining action and stakes over a board game where you get free gold for playing (come on).

  • @nex-stargaze ok so why is fishing in there or why gather wood for a fire and cooking when you can simply go to your ship and cook? why sit on chairs that are on top of cliffs just for an achievment? or why have musical instruments that add nothing to pirating itself but are compliments to the game?
I see the value in adding more which simply compliment the game and if you don't then thats your opinion but these forums are here in part for suggestions which might sometimes be completely opposite to what the base game is.
Personally i don't see anything wrong with having cards or darts and not far out from something a pirate did.

  • Please avoid engaging in personal arguments and derailing the topic of the thread. It is fine to debate the content of the post, and the viewpoints therein, but disrespecting any of your fellow pirates personally is against the pirate code, and our forum rules.

Several posts have been removed on both sides. If you can't avoid bickering, stop responding/baiting each other please.

  • @triheadedmonkey I’m sure it won’t do me any good but could you drop me a link to make a support ticket about your moderator action (seems like a small, tight-knit group for rare). I never felt disrespected and was actively trying not to be disrespectful. I would have only described the comments as “curt” or “rude” which tends to happen even in moderated debate. And I certainly felt we stayed on topic the whole time. You internet yelling in all caps is first thing I’d classify as disrespectful in the whole thread.
    Thanks, monkey.

  • @hawkeye99 Of course! It is the same place to report anything SoT related https://support.seaofthieves.com/

From the drop-down menu, General Enquiry is probably the best option but as long as you fill out the ticket correctly it will make it to the correct person.
