I dont know if this has been talked about or not, but I feel we need the ability to change captaincy in game. Like if the captain leaves the game or DC's due to lazybeard and comes back, we should be able to either go to the shipwright in order to gain captaincy back. If the captain leaves, another player should be able to make the ship their own captained ship if they have 1 of the same type. If the captain DC's and comes back, we should be able to access the shipwright to regain our captained ship.

Quick search says a few times yes

So what your saying. You want to..be playing the game on a normal ship, forgot you had a Captain ship and go to a outpost to vote and switch the ship out with a Captain one.
That I can sorta agree, (but who forgets?)
Now when it comes to Captain ships already in progress. What if the Capt was the Only owner of a Galleon Capt ship? and the other crewmates didn't have a galleon captain ship, you cant vote for one. BUT..I can see if the original guy coming back and wishes to recaptain there ship. (like they return before set of time)
If this would work, the current ship would have to be sunk or disappear. Any cargo and resources gone. And the ship type can't be changed.
@burnbacon Pretty much exactly that yes. If the captain leaves, the remaining crew can vote to recaptain the ship ONLY if someone else in the crew has a ship of that type (in your example a galleon). If no one has a galleon other than that 1 guy who left, then you will have to exit the game and start in a new server.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is in the works in some way
seems to me like something they would eventually want to add as a qol improvement but it probably has a lot of technical difficulties to get through for it to work alright
Assuming they did not do something totally strange and outside software norms every active ship, captained or not has an internal ID. That ID is in memory on the server and the client for each crew member, PLUS any client for any crew that is nearby or in an alliance.
Renumbering those ships would be a nightmare. Syncing potentially 18 machines in real time before any one of those sends a single packet to the server referencing those ships.
For a non-captained ship they could in theory at least forgo the renumber. But for captained ships they must renumber because the captain may want to log back in solo or with a new, non-toxic, crew using HIS ship. For captained ships the ID is almost certainly the same on disk as in memory.
And the thing is, the problems that lead to these requests have to do with strangers forming crews, then someone leaves or the crew is toxic and the captain leaves. So the root problem is really the PuG crew.
Solution: Guilds, guildies don't usually abandon guildies.
