Ship Board Games

  • I've been playing a lot recently, and one of my major complaints is that the time I spend onboard is mostly just walking around. There are some things to do (like fishing or songs) but overall, there isn't anything that keeps me engaged. Me and a friend had an idea to combat this ship-induced boredom- board games!

In this concept, there would be a game table below deck where crewmates could play a variety of traditional board games, such as Checkers (perhaps with pirate themed pieces), War, Go Fish (With fish in the game) and Solitaire (for lonely solo players).

These games are not complicated and were even likely played by real pirates, which makes me think they are a perfect addition to the game.

Hmmhmm. But who is looking around watching for ships before they attack you?

Also. Enjoy your board games, I’ll slowly sail up and sink you and listen to the cries because “you weren’t watching the horizon”

I really like the idea of the whole crew being down below gathered around a table, "now where did I put that stronghold powder keg" :)

  • @burnbacon You bring up a good point that playing games leaves you open to attack if you aren't watching the horizon. I can't think of a perfect solution to this issue, but having the the games stay saved even if one or both players briefly walk away could allow you to check the horizon without fear of losing your game. If you come up with a better solution, feel free to post it below.

  • Hey everyone! I just made a mockup of a card for the Go Fish game. Hope you like it!!
    Here it is!

  • I just made a new mockup including 8 possible cards for the Go Fish game. Tell me what you think!
    Here they are

  • Please no. I don't want to read " someone attacked me while I was peacefully playing my board game " crying threads.

If it does get implemented where exactly would you put it on a sloop? And if your ship takes damage it should knock pieces around and ruin that game and you have to start over.

Thats like saying "lets not add literally any content because then who will look around for ships while doing said content".

Checking the horizon takes only a few seconds so how is that going to help with OP's issue? You could say they should adjust sails but that again only takes a few seconds and then you're back to standing around doing nothing.

  • I don't mind this but think better placed in tavern, this feels like it would encourage crewmates midsail to essentially go afk. The larger ships take more coordination and effort. Anchor, sails, helm all slower adjusting and except helm need multiple people to work efficiently.

  • @pithyrumble i think thats a good change as it would help alert players if they were under attack, and there should be an achievement for it happening near the end of a game.

  • Idea: Maybe the board would be on the main deck so that you could see the horizon while playing. Alternatively, the games could be played on a "game table" that acts like a placable piece of furniture. Then you could put it wherever you want!

  • Minigames would be a great addition, details can always be ironed out just like fishing which is a minigame in itself.

  • I do like this idea. I think we could use more things to keep us engaged during long sails. Games were something teased early on with Sea of Thieves. Such as Karnath, a game played using dice or cards.

A new interactive form of ship trinket would be good for games. I know a certain 'sit-on' barrel below deck on the sloop that would be perfect to layout a board game on. I'm sure there are similar spots on the larger ships, just can't think of them right now.

Any game where you take turns, like chess and backgammon, one player could be away watching the horizon and manning the helm while the other takes their turn. When that player's turn is over they can relieve their crewmate to go below and take their turn. Being Sea of Thieves, cheating could be a thing. Maybe you move some of your opponents pieces before taking your turn at helm.

Being trinkets it would be possible to limit the type of games you would have based ship crew size. Sloops you'd only have access to 2 player games while a galleon has access to 4 player. As mentioned earlier, being a trinket also means that the game could get jostled and have to be reset. Unless you "save" it. In the Heart of Fire novel they mention using wax to hold chess pieces in place between games. Perhaps something like that could be an option.

Another idea I have is a new type of equipment. Where you'd buy games from the merchants. The components of these games could be themed after the different trading companies. A crewmate would then pick which variant of these "pocket" games they wanted equipped as you would with any of your gear. When activated they'd lay it out wherever they are. Play on the deck, beach, even in a creepy cave. These would likely have to be dice and card based games. Something that can be quickly pocketed when trouble comes around.

  • Some solo games like darts, stabbing the table with a knife between fingers, solitaire would be nice and you guys have a lot of interesting suggestions. However I can see a lot of ships crashing into rocks and islands.

I think fishing is an excellent way to spend this time, however the amount of time it takes to catch even the most common fish kind of deters me from doing this when the distance to next island is not long
