Do people hate tall-talers?

  • Hello. I do tall tales a lot and I've noticed a strange trend. I'll be halfway through the tall tale and docked at a small island when a brig or galley (rarely a sloop) pops up and I'm boarded, but that's not the strange part, the strange part is that upon seeing that I have nothing of monetary value, excluding the chests that come with the tale, and instead have items needed for the tale, they ferry-lock me and scuttle my ship? It's a very common thing, happening at least once in most of my tall tales, I'd say six or seven times out of every ten. Am I just getting bad luck or do most people genuinely hate tall-talers?

  • it's random

check points really help out people doing tall tales these days so even though attacks are annoying and even unpleasant at least people can still progress

people joke about hunting tall tale people but in general most try to be at least somewhat considerate about it

a lot of tall tale attacks are by people without much experience themselves, open crews, and occasionally people that are unkind but targeting is fairly rare, most of it is random

the ones that really mess with you trying to ruin your experience would do the same to me, they are just randomly looking to create trouble

  • often i will sink a ship if they are at an island i need to be at, or are too close to an island i need to be at because i know if the person im sinking is even remotely like me, they would cause some trouble since they have nothing to lose.

Many times i have been just messing around doing an adventure or voyage, and i just mess with some one whos at the same place as me, be it crashing their ship, kegging their ship, or just being a gremlin in general. So i dont give people the same chance to do the same things to me.

Its probably different reasoning for others, but thats my take at least.

  • Wow, no, that's crazy unlucky. I've done all the tall tales a few times and I've seen no more encounters during them than any other part of the game. I've been sunk by people without loot when fishing or just starting out on a session and had people chill when I was hauling major loot. I've had people help me unload my loot before and point out solutions to tall tales I was on. Six or Seven pointless sinkings out of ten is insanely unlucky. Honestly, seeing another human six sessions out of ten is mad odds. No offence, but how long to you spend on an island?

Wish people had more of a shoot second rather than maybe unneccessarily first.
As it's Christmas, this quote is quite apt: "if you're not a part of the solution, you're a part of the problem. Quit being a part of the problem..."

    like they say in Wolfen

they kill to survive, they kill to protect, in the end it's all for the hunting ground.

many don't have the numbers, the power, the luxury of shooting second.

  • Its pretty much the reason why we don't do tall tales anymore.
The first time we started the game we wanted to do one and got attacked by other players. They knew we were doing a Tall Tale and made an effort to take the quest items to the red sea. As players that just started out with the game it was really infuriating. So we basically stopped doing them and focused on learning how to defend ourselves first. Once we feel confident enough we might try them again but honestly, for me I don't think I want to anymore since being attacked in the middle of NPC dialogue really ruins the immersion. I really want to learn about the story and the characters but if I have to keep looking out for players and fight them off then I don't really see a point in doing them. I think they should do the same as they did with the PotC Tall Tales since other players can't disturb you on those. Captain Falcore did a video on this and I totally agree with what he's suggesting.

Were you trying before check points?

they aren't perfect and don't solve everything but they do allow people a bit of support for the times there are issues.

  • @wolfmanbush We were still new, we didn't know that checkpoints existed and so we just gave up and did something else.

  • No i don't think so, resources like cannonballs are important too. Seems to be bad luck, not sure how u have so many encounters. Another situation is if the other person has business in your location or in the vicinity, they might attack you because you pose a threat. After the first shot is fired, it's also no guarantee you won't retaliate or lie as revenge for the attack, so stopping even after your ship is found to be useless can also be an issue. Of course, not everyone thinks like this, some will leave u alone, it just depends on who you meet. Chances are, if someone is on the hunt for resources, then chances are they are a sweaty try hard and won't come down from attacking ur ship. If they have business in or near your area, then they might or might not attack. If they do attack though, there's a higher chance that they will continue to attack than stopping the attack in mid fire. If you want to have a small but significant chance to calm down these types of people, using voice mic is better than text chat, builds more trust if u have a voice behind the pirate.

The thing with this game, playing how you like isnt exactly being part of a problem. As long as you follow the rules, you are free to do what you please.

Defending my stuff with a precautionary sinking isnt wrong, nor is causing antics to those who are too trusting in this game.

  • @cloud9-7327 its not bad luck, its the way these folks made the game. it should have been called Waves of DoucheBaggery instead of sea of thieves. a few folks on these forums will chant up and down that its not the typical experience, at each and every person who claims to have similar or worse experiences than you did. or.. and this is my favorite.. after you relay what your experience was in detail (regardless of the details, they dont seem to matter to the few) they will claim its your fault, that your sitting on the dock at the outpost or you trying to sail away from the other guy escalated the situation.

this is the way the devs programmed the game and set rules for the game, if you dont like getting ganked, just find an alliance group so you can block unwanteds on your the server youre playing on, OR do like me, sit back and dont play often biding your time in hopes the devs will finally private dedicated servers. so we can just play the game our own way with people we want to play with instead of the random trolls that reside all over SOT.

Check points were added to support people like the op

even though the gold curse has been cheesed heavily which does bring down overall significance long time players have largely been supportive of the decision. The support for the decision comes from people largely agreeing that people should be able to experience tall tales without having their experience repeatedly ruined within the risk/reward environment.

In general the more experienced side of the community has leaned into leaving people only doing tall tales alone, not everyone but certainly a significant portion.

A lot of the encounters that newer players and tall talers experience are other inexperienced players and/or open crews which is a part of the piratical learning process to gain experience.

Salty much? Finding tall talers is like a catch and release program. Most of the time they end up back doing what they were.

If you shoot first, you sink. If you resist, you sink. If we board and you've only got tall tale items, you pay the chain tax.

I cant wait for private servers, it will make taking screen shots easier, setting up practice fights easier, racing my friends easier. What it won't do is add the ability to grind gold, reputation, commendations, or milestones.

  • @captain-coel your definition of private servers and my definition differ. ive got a pretty large gaming group that would love to play the game but wont do it with the current official servers and state of the game, and certainly wont play on private servers that have no progression. what my folks and i would like to see is private DEDICATED servers that WE can run so we control who plays on them and keep the toxicity out. we have alot of fun on other multiplayer pvp games that provide our own servers. atlas, conan, 7 days, and so on... all are great pvp fun but they ALL offer the ability to run your own servers with game progression and allow you to block toxic players out, pve or pvp alike. and thats what me an my gaming group is praying that rare will FINALLY allow.

as far as tall tales go.. honestly should be either disassociated from the regular pvp servers or should be a very limited pvp situation. those attack tall tale players and sinking their ships or demanding a chain tax are the kind of toxic garbage that drives alot of would be players into the holding pattern hoping for private run dedicated servers. and i only say alot of would be players based on the folks i talk too, i tend to avoid toxic attitudes so i admit my opinion could very well be very biased but no less correct in thinking.

edited: and no not salty, just factual from personal experience. if you read it as salty thats on you bud.

  • @pteth right but Rare has said that private/custom server will be as I described. They are currently available for partners to use, I've been fortunate enough to benefit from that. Allowing people to grind and progress privately is not something rare wants.

  • @captain-coel i know what they said 2 years ago about private servers, i also know what they said about the 4 years ago which was never happen. so its not like they dont ever change their approach, just means thats not what they want right now. as the player base dwindles and sales continue their slow decline, who knows.. maybe they are waiting to use it ats a profit booster later.

Where are you getting the sales volume information from? That would be interesting to see. I guess all games decline in sales over the years. It's the natural order.

And when ever it gets brought up, they get redirected to those old posts. PVE servers just arent going to be a thing. Thats not what this game is about

  • No, nobody hates Tall Talers. Its just unlucky. Maybe they are new People who want to engage in PvP or they are just some random people that are evil and want to sink you ship. It happens me a lot, they also follow you across the whole map, even without any chance of getting loot because you have none. As someone who got quite familiar with PvP and can sink some ships on a solo sloop, most of them aren’t that good. The really good players are not bothered with sinking you when you do a Tall Tale because its just a waste of Time and Resources for both sides.
Maybe if you try to communicate and maybe shoot white Firework they will stop their attack.
