There's so much I like about this game. Easily 90% of my time spent here has been great; I love getting on a ship with my friends and exploring, doing puzzles, hunting for lore, finding and burying treasure, fighting fleets of skeleton ships and giant sea monsters, it's visually stunning and has the best audio design of anything I've ever played, but so far every single one of my sessions ended with me just that much closer to never wasting another second on it because everyone one of them without exception has ended with some player with 10x my time played stomping the hell out of me, and half of that time while shouting homophobic slurs. The description of it as a sandbox is a lie because you can only play it how you want if "how you want" is constantly worrying about getting gangstalked. The constant threat of getting ganked completely ruins absolutely every enjoyable aspect of the game.
It's a great game if you want to live your bullying fantasies kicking around people with no real chance of fighting back, and a terrible game if you want to just do any of the content that isn't (getting obliterated in) PvP.

Half of your sessions lead to hearing homophobic slurs?

I find this unlikely given my organic experience. It happens, it's not cool and has no business being on the seas but I also find exaggeration that attempts to smear the character of large chunks of the community to be harmful.

If people said there is a lot of cringe out there I'd say yeah I see that, if people said there was a lot of unpleasant personality clashing I'd say yeah I see that but the narratives that try to paint many people as hateful within this game are not accurate by anything I have seen.

  • @wolfmanbush Have you tried flying a pride flag? Maybe I'm cursed but the community seems deeply homophobic. My very first session was being hounded by a rank 5 reaper galleon demanding I change my flag or "die, gay boy, die".

I do not doubt that you have experienced mistreatment and that you have witnessed slurs and unacceptable behavior that violates the rules but it's important to only hold those accountable that acted that way. They don't represent the community, only themselves. Others are not responsible for it only those that did it.

You can use whatever cosmetic you want for whatever reason you want.

If you are experiencing regular violations of the rules you can capture your gameplay and use clips as evidence to report it. The flag is there for you to use as you please.

It's videos like this that completely destroy any discourse or discussion around topics or pieces of media. It's just a bunch of people very aggressively yelling and hurling random insults and saying some random things with nothing to support it but say it so loudly and confidently that surely they must be correct, right?

It's the same thing that caused the destruction of discussion around the current state of things like Star Wars, just people yelling random things they've made up or that don't matter and ignoring the actual legitimate criticisms that exist of the product. It goes no where and helps no one.

The worst part is is that when actually dissecting what this person is trying to say there is actually the most sound arguments I've heard for private servers in Sea of Thieves. I still don't really agree but I can definitely see the benefits and understand the argument much more.

It's honestly kind of ironic since I've seen similar kind of "Discourse" from the opposite side using similar talking points in defense of the game's current state. Basically painting the opposition as a bunch of manlets (To put it politely) while calling the game perfect as is.

  • @kalgert Oh yeah absolutely people make the same kinds of videos in defense of stuff as well, the internet as a whole has in many ways helped with discussion of these kinds of things and has absolutely ruined it at the same time. I use to feed into these kinds of videos a lot a few years back and it was just miserable, everybody's just angry and yelling and were never satisfied or even seemed to know what they really wanted.

I just can't take these kinds of videos or these kinds of content creators seriously anymore

  • @peony7185 I am (Or was, anyway) fairly consistent with what I wanted out of the game, but that was a long time ago. Now I am just someone who wants to put the game behind me, but still ends up dreaming about it and subconsciously thinks about it, making watching any pirate media a painful experience.

  • @kalgert Okay bro I don't mean to be an armchair psychologist but looking at your forum profile, if you aren't just trolling or something then you need to talk to somebody or something because a game you don't play anymore being that much of a bother to you ain't normal

  • @peony7185 I think it'd be more obvious if I were a troll about it.

Also, would be glad to talk to someone, if it weren't gonna be something that will be laughed out of any kind of professional setting.
Other than "Don't think about it" which... I try, there isn't exactly an easy solution to it.

  • @kalgert I'd reckon that professionals have heard of and helped people with things you'd consider far stranger. If it's genuinely an actual problem I'm sure a professional would love to help, I just don't think you're gonna find any solution or help for it talking in these forums and wishing for multiple peoples passion project to die.

  • @peony7185 I can't say I expect anyone's help, as I have trust issues with people in this game, both in and outside of it.
And about it being a passion project for people... I had my own passion projects that were killed. I used to enjoy ESO, now it's a mindless waste of time to play anything outside of instanced content. A part of me just wants to see the gaming world burn after spending a good chunk of change on a game that was destroyed before my eyes.

Even then, if I were to go out to talk to someone about this, acceptance policies have become very hostile after 2020.

  • My favorite aspect of this game is two-fold:

    • The amount of Quality of Life (QoL) content
    • The addictive nature of adventuring

I have seen just about every nook and cranny of the map so far. Yet, the random encounters, and organic nature of the gameplay are what keeps things interesting for me. As long as it has been implemented, how many games cater to this level of immersion? For example, there are very little HUD elements. No crosshair for aiming, except for a crack in the scope. Everything from the effect of drinking too much grog, to the muffled sound after being near an explosion... I am constantly discovering new things that "pull me in". This latest Captaincy update only explores that further. As a primarily solo-slooper, I find myself having the most fun just relaxing with my Parrot, Bruni, a storage crate by my side and plenty of time to just fish my troubles away at Smuggler's Bay. This, in my opinion, is where the game shines. Everything else just compliments it.

Furthermore, all that being said, I am not a big proponent of PvP. I appreciate the implementation, but its existence doesn't affect me one way or another. In my mind, it just adds to the immersion. I like to help new players and form alliances. Sure, there are the few players who sink me for no reason. But isn't that just like real life? Perhaps if there were more incentives to working together; maybe that would keep more casual players. Like the alliance system, for example. :)

@wolfmanbush It's always refreshing to read your post.

I almost consider the word "toxic" to be toxic itself. Toxic to me would be a foul-mouthed crew using specific words that I won't repeat, working hard to try and get me to leave the server (and that has only happened a few times to me). I may not like what they are doing, but I don't consider another crew that sinks my ship and killing me a few times to be toxic.

Sea Forts have been a tremendous help for me. The short time that they take does lower the risk involved. And I have done enough of them that I don't get so anxious about getting attacked after completing one anymore.

Hitting islands and skelly ships is always fun for me. But I also know that there is so much more to do in this game than that.
As a veteran player, I also know that it is possible to go multiple sessions without ever having a PVP encounter. These are the sessions that suck me in deeper to the game every time.
This is a beautiful game with so much to do within it. I'll continue to play this game in its current PvEvP format. I just have to be in the right mindset for it.

I do wish that the SOT community had a little more compassion in the forums for those that shy away from the PVP part of the game. Even though I suck at it, I under that PvEvP is a tune worth dancing to. But I do hope that one day in the future, Rare can do something to keep many of its newer players from logging out for good.

I would say the best way to do stuff is to grab a couple of pals and run a Brig. Solo slooping is rough, but with 3 people you can have someone be lookout and the Brig in a crosswind is insanely fast.

  • Couldn't watch the whole thing. His initial take on PvP seems to demonstrate a misunderstanding of how it fundamentally adds to the core experience of the game. He at least got the PvE right, though.

  • @ogdirtyape said in LazerPig preaching it as it is.:

Sure... I am glossing over that there are all kinds of interactions with other crews in between all that completion [mod edit] that I am doing. Those almost always end in a ship being sunk and salty sailors ghosts floating up to the sky.
