There is a post on this forum that claims sea of thieves works without a game pass, if you own the game outright!

However that is not my experience.... I have bought the game, downloaded the game... then when I try to play the game, it offers me the options of purchasing a game pass or Xbox live gold. There are no other options...
Turning off the network to try and force the game to work in a stand alone mode, it complains that there is no connection....
In the end I asked for a refund, but was informed that more that 14 days have passed since purchase...
As you can imagine, I'm a bit disgruntled.

PC or Xbox ?
For PC you need to sign up for some MS thing, but that's free. AFAIK playing games on Xbox online with other players requires additional service(s).@halfmedusa34767 If you are playing on Console, then an Xbox Live subscription is required for almost all Online Games.
Game Pass is an alternate to purchasing games outright and acts as almost a Netflix style catalogue of games.
Game Pass Ultimate Includes both Xbox Live AND Game Pass.
If you are playing on PC/Steam, then Xbox Live is not required.
@halfmedusa34767 as been mentioned by previous posters...XBox Gold membership is required to play online...and as SoT is an online game, you NEED THAT to play SoT...on XBox...

Thanks for information, it's an XBox one.... perhaps I'm being dense, but if I bought a game pass, so the game could be played online...

You'd need just a gold membership OR Gamepass Ultimate, which is Gamepass+Gamepass for PC+GoldmembershipSo Gold is always required to play online
Gamepass is just the games, without the ability to play online@soccerpro0707 because the basic GamePass subscription doesn't include Xbox Live Gold (which you need to play online).
