The game needs a map expansion and more types of AI enemies

  • Let's be honest, it's embarrassing that the game has been out this long and has only received a SINGLE major map update. I know that the content that's been added has been important because the game launched in what was basically an alpha state but one of the reasons that the toxic PvP crews exist and are not interested in anything else is because they've been to all the islands a million times, explored every inch, and can recognize them from halfway across the map by eyesight. The game desperately needs new play spaces, something that even the most seasoned crews will have to spend some time familiarizing themselves with, thus encouraging them to do voyages and engage in PvE content again. And at this point that expansion should be very big, preferably almost doubling the size of the map. It would do more to calm the seas than any amount of instanced content or new types of voyages could ever do.

And along with that, the game desperately needs a wider variety of PvE content to engage with. The last actual update in that regard was adding the skeleton ships almost two years ago. Apparently the enemies from A Pirate's Life will be popping up in the main world which is a solid start but after three and a half years it just doesn't cut it. You can only go to an island and fight skeletons and then a skeleton captain so many times before the cabin fever sets in and PvP is the only option to add variety to the combat. Where's the giant crab? Where's an update to the way krakens fight or appear? Where's literally ANYTHING that fights in a different way than the AI enemies we currently have?

These both seem like such obvious things to add but there's been nothing in either regard for years, and whether anybody realizes it or not, it's absolutely part of what's dividing the community so heavily in terms of PvP vs PvE. The gameplay is so amazing and there's truly nothing like it, but the current PvE content is boring because it's just slight variations on all the same things that have been in the game since launch or just after. Give us something truly NEW to experience.

  • You made this post on the eve of the biggest content drop this game has ever seen.

  • @luciansanchez82 Segregated instanced content=/=map expansion. I addressed the addition of the Pirate's Life enemies to the main game in my post.

  • @shralla I feel like the new update will be instanced for a little while to give players the time to explore and experience it but it will eventually be added to the main map

  • @shralla there is also the map devlopment downward, as in the merfolk’s domain which is on the main map.

    Afaik this is not instanced.

Then there is the part that expanding the map further outward will just make it that player interactions will become rarer, which is something the devs would like to prevent and currently they still havent been able to have more then 6 ships on a server (ships are very resource expensive).

What i feel more for is leave the current map as is and develop more toward different maps which can be traversed to by portal kind of like the new instanced version in the tt but then just migrate to a different server with a different map

This - nothing more to see here folks!

  • Um

Have you actually seen the new trailers for the update coming tomorrow? Or are you another one of those "rock dwellers" I hear of time to time...?

  • Did you miss the update coming June 22nd???

  • That all might as well come, just not in a way you want.
Expanding the map to new instances seems to be possible now by using portals. But expanding the current map still has one major issue to deal with: old consoles.
By moving to new instances (aka servers) the technical load is reduced, so that's why it works. But expanding the existing world considerably will take a performance hit once again and is even less likely to fix already existing problems.

I agree it would be nice and all, but it needs to be anchored to reality, and that reality is old hardware holding the game back.

  • @shralla there came more than just the skeleton ships...ghost ships, skeleton lords, ashen lords...don't tell me ghost ships are just a reskin, or so, of skellie ships...they are not, they move differently and you have to approach different to them, for example...there is so much PvE to do...making such a thread now, 1 day before release of "A Pirates Life" seems like you just came to troll

  • @kein-konich careful matey - part of your comment may well be locked behind insiders and as such, the NDA.

The trailers clearly show portals and instanced areas were mentioned in the showcase yesterday

    Phew! That's ok then!
I've not watched the new stuff and wanted to keep you safe there.

    Carry on carrying on.

  • @shralla The new portal for instanced areas could EASILY be reused in the future to reach a separate map, with new regions, as this one's getting too big to add anythibg stability-wise

  • Until I see the new AI threats in regular Adventure mode, I have to agree with OP.
As I am not a big PotC fan, this update kind of makes me a little concerned.

  • @unfadingshimmy it has already been stated in interviews etc that the new enemy types can and will be a thing to encounter in the general sandbox

  • @callmebackdraft I missed that showcase video. Watching it now. Thanks.
