Can I make a suggestion. I think the game would benefit from 2 different classes of each ship type. Traders and men of war. There should be only very subtle differences best one I can think of traders have stern chasers to help them escape and men of war have bow chasers to help them catchup. It would end those long drawn out chases across the map giving each ship a chance to break the stalemate.
Different classes of ship
No, the chases are part of the game. If you don't want to fight you have the option to run and try to outsail them. If they can't catch you it's their fault.
The bow canons would be much more powerful than the stern canons as they can be used while approaching, used to fire over pirates (stern doesn't need this, they can just drop in the water), it's easier to get the bow of the ship targeted than it is to target with the stern.

While this is quite an interesting and unique idea it goes against on of the foundational premises of this game where it forces a playstlye.
In this game you are free to do what ever you want at anytime. Your ship and your crew has no inherent advantage to another it's all about skill and you are given tools to use as you see fit not rules that you must abide by. This is touted by the dev as "Tools not Rules"
You should are both the merchant and the pirate your never ethier or. You choose moment to moment how you will handel an encounter. Will you run, fight, or hide you have a varity of options and tatics to choose from. Gaining more as you collect utility items that expands your options. Your never forced to play just one way.
Hope this explians why your idea does not fit this game. It's not a bad idea tho.
