It’s a pirate game. Play Minecraft if you don’t like toxic players
Tall tales ruined by toxic PvP players.
Taken from my comment regarding previous discussion on the same topic:
Turning off PvP to exclusively grind content would make the game dull. Consider that the most threatening thing is other sailors. A good sailor can 1v4 a Galleon, take all their loot, and cash it in, which means that on the seas, anything you have is at risk of being taken from you, and this is a good thing.
Now, why is that good?
- This is a pirate game with PvP. If the biggest threat is other sailors and you are a sailor yourself, it presents the opportunity for growth and honing your skills. Without PvP you would never improve besides the linear and rather predictable PvE content.
- PvP and looting other ships allows you to advance faster because you get the same reward for a fraction of the time in exchange for a bigger risk.
- The constant threat of PvP keeps you on your toes to be prepared for anything, which in turns hones your decision-making both in-combat and out-of-combat.
- PvP provides a way to spice things up outside of the aforementioned predictable PvE content. What's unpredictable? Sailors. What's very unpredictable? Good and bad sailors. Learning how to react to them helps you stay alive longer and win more fights.
Ask anyone who grinds only PvE content and avoids PvP like a plague: they either do not play the game any longer or do not enjoy the long grind.
In the seas, you will sink, you will lose, you will be robbed, and you will be beaten. It's all a matter of fixing the mast and setting sail once more into the tides.
ADDENDUM TO MAKE POST RELEVANT: I think you're also confused on what the definition of "thief" is:
thief
/THēf/
noun
noun: thief; plural noun: thievesa person who steals another person's property, especially by stealth and without using force or violence.
This means that while a thief would typically employ stealth and avoid force/violence, they aren't restricted to doing so. I'm afraid your post's point falls a few coins short of a chest, friend.
I honestly don't get this post yesterday I solo slooped, wild rose 3 times and art if the trickster 3 times for the achievement. I consider my self an average gamer and had little trouble completing one TT per hour.
If it takes hours to solve a TT puzzle then of course someone is going to rock up and rick roll you. The problem doesn't lie with the other pirates, it is your inability to complete the task in a reasonable time frame.
Recently I was loading up a fishing galleon at Plunder Outpost when a sloop came right in towards us. We were going to ignore them but they started firing cannons at us, so we sunk them and killed them.
Turns out they had a lot of loot, but also tall tale items to hand in. We sold all their loot, but left the tall tale stuff on the dock in case they came back.
If they hadn’t attacked us, we would have left them alone, their fault.

So I've been playing Sea Of Thieves since the day of release and I have quit playing the game on multiple occasions because of the toxic community. I am aware that PVP is a big part of the game for people but when someone voices their opinion about wanting to play the game in more of a PVE idea most people instantly hate on them, saying things like 'Its called Sea Of Thieves, not Sea Of Friends' but the huge issue with this.....is that it makes no sense because if you are going as technical of saying that then you clearly have forgot what a thief means. "a person who steals another person's property" It's like everyone's brain just cuts off at this point of what a thief is but if you just read the definition and actually use your brain it clearly says "by stealth and without using force or threat of violence." Now let me think..... Someone jumping onto your ship and instantly taking you by gun point and blowing your brains out with a shotgun does not sound like a thief to me. I understand that them adding PVE servers could hurt the game because the only way PVP players can actually do anything resolves on them robbing the people who do the missions but overall sure this is true but is it really fair that people will spend hours doing a tall tale just for people to murder and take the stuff you have spent hours doing puzzles for. If people really want to be technical then Sea Of Thieves needs a name change if that is practical the only argument people use because it doesn't make sense. I already know people will spread hate all over the post but whatever it has to be said, people clearly don't know what thief means.
Cry me a river. Bottle up those tears and sell them.
So you got your Tall Tale stolen, right? Then what did you do?
It's at this point most pve'rs make a crucial mistake. In a rage they typically leave the game instead of kindly and with respect reaching out to their opponents in hopes that they will leave the quest item somewhere it can be retrieved. This can be done by searching your "recents" list and sending a message to those that took your items. You'd be surprised how many crews willingly accommodate your request.@multiplex-graph griefers confusing griefing for pvp is killing the game by the day. if anything pve servers would actually breath life back into the game. then you would see griefers complain about griefers and how ironically sweet it would be.

Negative. PvP'ers don't complain about greifing because you can't be greifed by the enemy in this game.

@jisatsu-kiddo This is the state of the game right now in my personal experience.. I got Dogpiled in the comments for writing like a "Crybaby" about this game getting TOO TOXIC because Streamers turn Griefers and then influnce the Community into trolling people so that they rage quit.. or even just shouting "Get Off The SERVER"
These types of players should be banned.. ALL OF THEM - [mod edit]

There are lots of Pirates here who have done Tall Tales solo and have defended themselves WHILE doing it.
Just to add to this with my own story. I was solo Slooping the second Tall Tale where you gotta kill a skeleton lord. I got her skull and was sailing straight back to the Outpost I needed to go. I didn't want to go off track to get this fully manned briggy ship off of me because the longer I keep this skull on me, the higher the chance I'll lose it and fail the Tall Tale...
So, as a solo Slooper and while being broadsided by two cannons... I completely focus on the defense and health of my ship, bailing out water, dodging cannonballs aimed for me, repairing holes, and so on. I eventually "won" when they took down the mast and started circling me but I repaired it and started sailing while they were heading in the opposite direction, and lost them easily...
I didn't PvP at all. Not fire a single shot. I focus primarily on keeping my ship alive and sailing.. In the end, I won. You just gotta get good at managing your ship's survival, at the very least.
Now personally I am good with PvP but when it comes to Tall Tale... I focus more on survival and completing my task than fighting enemy players.

......This is the video you used?
First off nothing toxic happened here. No greifing took place here either.
I want to point something out for all those players that scream they got one shot or someone hacked and killed them with one hit.
At 2:54 you'll see the streamer get shot TWICE. BOOM BOOM, then go off and say "oh man they just one shot me.".
Next I want to point something out, any of you realize WHY they got caught so quickly? Lets go through the video with the Eyes of a PvPer player and teach you guys WHY YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE GAME.
Look at the sails of the main Galleon thats running away. You guys notice anything? Yeah that stupid lip that players use to "see" where they are going. ON ALL 3 SAILS. Seriously, its like they are begging to get caught. That lip slows down your ship especially when you are doing it to all 3 sails.
Next, see how the player is complaining about the mermaid? How it was because of the mermaid they saw him get onto the boat? It wasn't the mermaid, it was common sense. Who doesn't protect their ladders when chasing another ship directly from behind? Who can't hear the splish splash of the swimmer or the noise when the person grabs the ladder? Its not some secret super power. The mermaid isn't the only reason.
Next notice how the wind was changing and how no one was on the wheel? Yeah thats because they are bad. You stay on wheel to stay with the wind and you have at least 2 crewman on sails to change if needed. Not only did the person turn the wheel, they turn their ship OUT of the wind slightly and just ignored the fact that they just did something stupid.
All I see on this video is a bunch of xbox players who are whinning about stream sniping when, honestly, who needs to stream snipe a nobody? Next they are screaming IP hacks for what?
Broski seriously, nothing happened here. If you are getting twisted up because of that video all I can suggest is stop getting so triggered over nothing.
SIDE NOTE Forgot to mention when they got rammed, none of them and I mean none of them even paid attention to anything. They immediately went to the anchor after the anchor ball. No one is watching ladders or checking for boarders. Nope. Just one person went there after hesitating on what to do.
PvE players.
I think a large part of t he problem is that the way the game works, the people wanting to steal other peoples loot have the advantage. The people doing quests have to go to certain NPCs to turn in whatever they have, they walk really slowly and cant fight back when they are carrying loot and people can just sit there and wait for them hiding in the bushes and whack them as they walk past. By the time they notice it's too late.
Meanwhile the people that steal loot from others they have nothing to loose. No treasure to loose, no money and even dying is meaningless as they just wait a few seconds and they can respawn.
The thieves have it too easy. Zero effort and can cheese their way to loot they did not work to get. What if there was a timer on loot that did not belong to you. So you would have to wait X-amount of time before you where able to turn it in. At least then it would give people working for their loot time to come back and take it back.
@roguedk said in Tall tales ruined by toxic PvP players.:

No loot belongs to you in the first place. The person who turns it in earned it, no matter how. Nobody is more entitled to a piece of loot than someone else.

So you are suggesting that a cornerstone of the game be changed because you can't adapt or counter certain strategy? I'm willing to bet that even if such measures were introduced, some people (you included) would still probably complain bout getting their loot stolen, and ask for even more consequences and crutches be added.
That said, it could be fun to hoard and hide treasure until the countdown is over 😊. The salt of people coming back for their loot only to realise you hid it already and they will be empty handed regardless if they sink you or not would be monumental.
Or change nothing and eventually no one will be around to do quests and then who will you steal from?
Ah so a baseless, factless, doomsayer's prediction. Got it. Carry on!

Spoken like a true closeminded fanboy. Theres a few in every batch. All we can ever do is suggest ideas for improvement. But to just cover our eyes and mumble "everything is fine, everything is fine" is sure to ruin any chance of progress.
Mumble on, friend! Mumble on.The core gameplay loop is so boring and outdated. Go get item, bring item to place/person. Everything in the game revolves around this idea. I don't want to put anymore time into tall tales. they are just longer, less rewarding versions of the 3 merchant alliances.
It's so broken that people convince themselves that its supposed to be boring so they "make their own fun". This is such a weird argument. I'm playing a video game because I'm bored. I didn't pay you 60$ so I could make my own fun.
Yes I would love a sandbox SOT. This game is not a sandbox!! If it were truly a sandbox then we would have access to tools to mess with the in game world/mechanics. In a sandbox YOU have control over Everything.
We all know Rare put this game out way too early. It didn't have enough content at release. Most the stuff in game today should have been available day one. You are supposed to fix your mistakes after you admit to them. Rare never fixed anything, they just admitted that mistakes were made. Content updates have just been band-aids to cover old wounds.
Rare has to go back to the core gameplay loop and make some big changes. Progression needs to be part of this game. PL is not good enough. It doesn't actually do anything for you. They need to stop being scared of giving experienced players an advantage. There is nothing wrong with having items/quests you have to progress to get. It's a mechanic in literally every online game for a reason. There needs to be more stuff to buy. Supplies for ships, more cosmetics, meals from merchants, jewelry, huts/homes.
There needs to be a big island that has an actual town/city hub. This could Also be a "safe zone". No reason you should be killed while talking to a merchant or trying to get your journey started. Right now there is No area on the map where you forsure know you could find a friendly crew. Add a hub for pirates looking for an alliance, this could be something in the main town. Pirate crews could join up and go on quests, have drinking games, (add an area in the town where you can challenge people to a duel). Make is so you can buy a hut and make it your own personal home. Here we could place decorations (more things to buy). Also special decorations could be gained from quests and events. Maybe pirates can only come in your house if you invite them in. I have always wanted to see where my pirate lives when he isn't at sea. I guess right now he just pitches a tent on an island.
Tall tales need to focus more on the story and less on the items that you need to complete them. Doing the tall tales I never paid attention to the story. I got online and used guides to get through them as quick as possible. I dont feel any connection to these people telling us the stories/ giving us the tales. The outposts don't feel lived in. They are just people in huts who only exist to give us gold and quests. Every interesting person in the tall tales is either evil or dead. I don't care about the wild rose love story. I never knew this girl before I started the quest. You need to develop the characters if you want me to actually care about them. There is alot of awesome moments and things in the tall tales. The death maze is really fun (yes, its hard. Being challenged in a game is not bad) the star map quest is really unique. Shores of gold is an amazing experience the first time. The end scene is amazing and it brings happy tears to my eyes. Puzzles/riddles are a key part in a game like this. They provide a good challenge and, are very rewarding when solved. The tall tales went way to far. There are too many puzzles just put in to add more time to the quest. Most the journal riddles just plain don't make sense. If you were hiding an item that you didn't want found why would you write about it in a journal. Let alone leave clues on how to find it.
The tale tales are just boring. I'm only being so negative because i know there is so much more potential. The tall tales have moments where you are reading stories about epic pirate battles or hearing about crazy monsters. Why aren't we seeing this stuff happen? Show don't tell. If you are gonna ask us to do them 5 times please make them harder every time. There is no reason to do them more than once unless you want the gold curse. I have done all the tall tales twice (some more). I just can't justify doing them anymore. Its really just a waste of time. The quest isn't more challenging, the puzzles are the same. The biggest threats when doing tale tales are bugs and other players. Hopefully the new tall tale will have more replayability with the 3 different routes. Still you should add more enemies every time. Brings me to my next point.
Enemies. The skeletons are getting so boring. Please Add something else to fight. How has it been 2 years and we don't have a different enemy? Here are some possible ideas: pirate bounty hunters, crazy island dwellers (they could have trained animals that fight with them), wild animals (lions, bears, komodo dragons), mythical and made up creatures( half shark half man, Bigfoot, dinosaur type creatures), evil mermaids, moby 🐳, ghost enemies that have left the ferry. The possibilities are endless.Have different factions you can choose from. The map is already divided into factions (each sea), might as well use it for something. They could Each have a different style and player base. Riches faction, exploration faction, swashbuckling faction, etc... Each player could choose a faction to work for, they turn their loot into that faction to get experience towards faction levels. Unlock more cosmetics, sword combos, and titles as you work your way up. Different factions could offer different upgrades. More ammo capacity, faster at raising sails/anchor, different things base on what the faction focuses on.
"Everybody is on an even playing field". This is a broken concept for a video game. Time played, age, IRL stuff, and alot of other factors all effect how you play the game. Just because you have the same gun doesn't mean you are on an even playing field. This "even playing mindset" is why the game has no progression, upgrades, or real long term content.
Honestly this game needs a big rework like anthem just got. Its not impossible. Rare just needs to man up and FIX the original problem. This game won't last if they don't. I haven't actually played in 2 weeks now. Whenever i think about getting on SOT my though process is this:
"maybe I'll play SOT...would be nice to get a tall tale done...but I'm not sure if I want to commit 2 hours to this tonight...and someone might sink me at the last leg of my quest again...maybe I'll just fish a bit...but now people are hunting fisherman like flies...maybe I will get my arena leveled up...took me 45 mins to find a laggy session last time...just log on and go wreck some pirates that are on an adventure."
I'm not gonna log on SOT just to go fight people. I'll get on an FPS for that. I feel like so many people play SOT this way. There is no way this is how they intended the game to be played. This game will not survive in the state its in. You can tell me im wrong all you want. I hope I am wrong...this in not a popular game on twitch/mixer. There is nothing that gets new players excited to stay and play, the bad experiences always outweigh the good. The no rules ideology that comes with the title of this game needs to go as well.Interpret this post however you want. I hate the game. I'm just trying to cause drama. I don't care. I know I pointed out lots of flaws. Thats how you find out what works and what doesnt. pretending like the game is amazing and doesn't need anything but the monthly content drop is ignorant. I'm posting this and leaving. If you can actually defend the mediocrity of this game I don't want to hear it. I didn't buy this game for mediocre content. This could be one of the best games ever made. Just need to go back to basics and build up the core of the game some more. With the right changes this could be the number one game on twitch and one of the best games of all time. My ideas are just that, ideas. Most of them probably are stupid to other people. That is ok, I'm not a game designer. So please rare, give me the tools to have a great adventure. I would Love to play again.

Cool, let us know when you have actual improvement ideas to the game. Oh and might as well throw some data to support those dire visions of yours?
@outeatamerica said in Tall tales ruined by toxic PvP players.:
Cool, basically you want to play something that SoT was never supposed to be. Hope you find that special game that will tickle your fancy!
Unfourtantly that is just the nature of any online open world game where people can kill people in, does not matter what the name of it is. I personally avoid PvP at all cost on this game because the PvP is just not for me, too cartoonish for my liking, I am into more brutal PvP. With that said we need to expect PvP in a game like this and yes there are people who take it too far. People who get really nasty about it or people who constantly spawn kill just for fun but again that is the sad state of online gaming.
There are many games out there where you can PvE on your own servers, me and my friends play games where we have our own servers set up on. For people who really do not like PvP or jacka$$ players then games like that are probably best for them. I am sorry PvP is ruining Tall Tales for you but that is the game and I do not see Rare changing it.
@combatxkitty Which games are like that? All the games that I can think of that have open world PvP(Other than match based multi games like BR games) have either a separate solo/coop campaign(games like red dead and GTA) or a separate instance you load into from the game world so that players can't mess with your experience(Tera is only one ive played but im sure all MMOs with PvP are the same way).
@betsill I play on PC. So there are many games you can establish your own server however it does cost money. A few games me and my friends have servers on that are Pve only are Ark, 5M and a survival game called Miscreated. Some people have PvP severs, you set it up how you want to play the game. Basically this way is nice for Pve'ers because you can play all functions of the game as you please unlike in games like take for example GTAO where you are limited as to what PvE you can do while in a private lobby. Altas is another pirate game I played on a Pve only server but my friend decided not to set one up for us because well the game had issues.
I enjoy PvP but what I do not enjoy is the drama that comes along with it. I been stalked and d dos'd by salty pvp'ers so I do not PvP as much as I use to and really do like the peace of PvE servers.
Unfourtantly that is just the nature of any online open world game where people can kill people in, does not matter what the name of it is.
Is what I was talking about. Every game other that SoT that I know of provides some sort of PvE only experience that is separated from PvP so that other players can grief you during the PvE.

Yes many games do have that however it seems like the devs of this game are not interested in that. I dont know, I been playing and following this game since launch and while I took a very long break I just have yet to get the feeling from the devs that they want us to have Pve only experiences.
What would you propose should be able to be done in a private session? I would personally be against high risk, high reward stuff being in private lobbies. In GTAO for example you can do certain missions like biker contracts or CEO work, jobs, some heist prep while in private but any thing to run your business where the big money is has to be in public.
SOT to me does not have enough low risk side jobs in my opinion where PvE only would work. Seems like the devs like the element of high risk when it comes to collection of treasures or golden chickens so I just do not see how Pve only would work.
I tried to explain the best I could but I was up till 4 am fighting skull ships so excuse me if I rambled abit or was not clear.
@combatxkitty What I would do within the system that we have now is just use the exact same system as the "ferry of the damned" and "legend hideout". Open a door, that door has a portal that teleports you and your crew to the new instance.

Would you want us to be able to do all the same stuff we could in public session? Like would you want us to be allowed to do forts, ghost ships, faction work all within in that new instance?
If that is the case dont you think that would cause a negative impact on what this game is supposed to be about and cause public server population issues. If people can choose to do high risk activities in private not all but many would and then what?Public Severs are already not populated enough as it is. Last night while me and my crew were trying to do ghost ship fights we were server merged several times. Each time that happened we were glicthed to where we could not touch anything on our ship so we each had to kill ourselves and respawn. It would be even worse if people could just do whatever they want in their own sessions.
@combatxkitty I don't see a point in just loading the same map without players unless Rare wants to be lazy....which is probably what would happen lol, but no. It would load an area exclusive for the specific mission like it works in MMOs, destiny raids, etc.
Pirates of the Caribbean the thieves actually stick together and fight the law, never see them steal from each other.
Also yeah a thief is quiet and sneaky with no brutality or killing but then we’re taking it literal.
There is a lot of players who play this game intentionally to kill others, they see a ship in the distance and just want to kill them, no other thoughts come over the simple mindset but to kill for no reason and feel happy to sail off...
Sadly we get these players in every single game. It’s why often or not I play PvE or coop games. I’ll play multiplayer shooters or racers, again they have the same issues with toxic players but I try to stay away from open world PvP games.
Sea of thieves is different and I enjoy it but if I play a game and there is a choice for pve and PvP, I’ll always go pve servers...
(Totally on topic but you will understand) Fallout 76 world is all pve/ PvP but you cannot get into PvP if you do not shoot back but the other player can troll but just shooting and annoying you but they are bringing in private worlds.. sadly it’s $100 a year but still private worlds with friends is far more enjoyable with the same progression with friends etc
Hopefully SoT brings the same features or something in line. Keeping saves, progression across the board or it’s pointless and a drain so let’s hope the private servers come sooner

Did we watch the same movies? Every character betrays and doublecross eachother at every turn for their own benefit, whether it's for a reason they think is just or for pure greed. Some do end up doing the right thing once in a while, but every character has their motivations, so do the players in this game.

It's a sandbox, people play the way they want. There are plenty of reasons to want to get rid of someone, either because you want to sell your loot where a ship already is, or want to quest on an occupied island. And who's to say people aren't roleplaying as Captain Salazar aboard the Silent Mary, killing all pirates in their wake?

Private servers will come, but they have been hinted to have no progression and their purpose being for fun community events and content creation. I'm sure those will be quite fun and prefect for players wishing to play in peace!
