A cosmetic idea ive had.
Dipping your lantern into fire on the Ferry will enchant your lantern for the next life. (Until you die again and repeat the process).
What this will enable you to do is soul capture enemies (except players).
Kill a skeleton and quickly drawing your lantern, lighting it, will make an astral character of whatever you killed appear inside your lantern.
You can then transfer this ghost into any lanterns you have on your ship.
They will persist even if the lantern is switched on or off allowing you to add the flames of fate with all the different colours, but having a cool astral skeleton, pig, shark or whatever else trapped inside it.
Transferring the astral enemy from your ship lantern to your personal lantern and holding it up will project a shadow onto the things near it.
So for example lets say you have a skeleton soul inside your lantern. Holding it up near a surface you will see the shadow if the skeleton, frantically bashing the lantern trying to break free.
Speaking of breaking free, this will unlock new commendations.
Taking particular animal and enemy souls to the island beacons, you can set them free there.
There could be commendations for setting particular enemies free and extra ones for specific colours of flame of fate with the particular enemy inside.
Even better too, if you decide to keep these ghosts hanging around, you can decorate your ship with all manner of ghosts in each lantern, projecting many shadows near any surfaces you sail nearby.
THERES MORE!
If you fill all the lanterns on your ship with souls your ship becomes HAUNTED. It doesnt do much for the gameplay but gives your ship a cool cosmetic aura. Basically loads of little ghostly orbs and graphics flitting and flying around your ship giving you a very sobering first impression.
The little ghostly orbs will represent whichever thing you have most.
So if you have lots of sharks, you will have little ghost sharks swim-flying around your ship in a cool ghostly circling aura, and vise-versa.
This game loves its cosmetics.
Its about time we have special ones to flaunt when you triggered purely from gameplay in a session rather than accrued from currency.
This isnt needed i agree, but i think it would be cool.
BUT WAIT?
I mentioned you could not soul capture players which is true.
But you can steal an essense from them.
Killing a player and performing the actions stated previously, you get a generic ghost inside the lantern representing part of a soul of the defeated player.
You can deck your ship out with souls of defeated pirates as the ultimate intimidation, maxing that out will trigger the haunted cosmetic aura effect making your ship be haunted by humanoid ghosts effectively telling other crews (Ive killed lots of people in this session best give my ship some space).
We need taunt cosmetics to do a show of force.
This would work well.
