Had a microsoft employee remote access my computer and said theres nothing wrong, the problem is on the game developments end, what do i do?

  • So i downloaded the game yesterday for windows 10 pc, the game was crashing on launch. I tried everything i could find on the forums, nothing worked. Eventually gave up and went to the microsoft support allowing one of their technicians to remote access my pc and try a bunch of stuff. Got the all clear, theres nothing wrong with my pc, he said the problem must be with the game developers end. Can someone please help????

  • @secretrabbit200 Sorry to hear you’re having problems me matey!

Get in touch with Support here - they’ll be able to help

  • @thetwistedtaste thank you but ive already tried that, that is how i got the agent to remote access my computer before, thanks anyways tho

  • @secretrabbit200 Are you logging into windows using a local account, or using your Microsoft account? The game tends to crash on startup if you are not logged into Windows with the Microsoft Account that purchased the game.

  • @d3adst1ck tried running the game on both my microsoft acount and another different local one

  • @secretrabbit200 You'd probably need to look in the Event Viewer to see what actual error message is being created.

  • @d3adst1ck that sounds good, any idea how you do that?

  • @secretrabbit200 Just have to ask, to eliminate possible reasons for the problem: Are you certain your PC meets the minimum requirements to run SoT, particularly the graphics card?

  • @secretrabbit200 press Windows key, start typing "Event Viewer" and it should show up. Open it, look under application logs for crash icons. When you click on it, you should see the details of the crash. If this was awhile ago, you can try to start SOT again and then look in the event viewer and the crash entry should be near the top.

  • @bactatankbill Yeah checked all the requirments, all good there too, thanks

  • @d3adst1ck is this the kind of information i should be looking for?:
Faulting application name: SoTGame.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5da47497
Faulting module name: SoTGame.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5da47497
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x0000000006604553
    Faulting process ID: 0x1490
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d58eb59540a68d

  • @secretrabbit200 oh there was this underneath as well:

    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.86.7937.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Athena\Binaries\UWP64\SoTGame.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.86.7937.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Athena\Binaries\UWP64\SoTGame.exe
    Report ID: d05eccb2-413a-4537-bc0e-370d304ca036
    Faulting package full name: Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.86.7937.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
    Faulting package-relative application ID: AthenaClientShipping

  • @secretrabbit200 There is sometimes an error name or code name or description that might help determine what exactly is happening. It may be in the grid list at the top (the line you are clicking on to get the detailed info).

  • @d3adst1ck do you mean the Event ID?

  • @secretrabbit200 or is it maybe this line
    Faulting process ID: 0x1fe0
when i put that into the microsoft error code search and nothing comes up

  • @secretrabbit200 Trying to find an example in my logs, but I think once I switched over to the microsoft account login permanently I stopped getting the crash on launch. I seem to remember that at the top of the log info it would specifically say something with "Authorization" failing but if yours is just giving "Faulting Application" error it may be a crash of some kind.

Based on the error code 0xc0000005 (memory access violation), this thread suggests re-installing the Insider Hub, if you have that installed. It also mentions an issue with Antivirus, and possibly trying to install a free app from the store: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/31268/semi-fix-crash-to-desktop-after-splash-screen/12

This reddit thread suggests it's Antivirus also: https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/85r819/game_unplayable/?st=k2mdpdnv&sh=30249c83

If you can temporarily disable antivirus (they usually have a stop for 10/15 minutes option), you could try booting the game up during this period and see if anything changes?

You may also want to run SFC just to make sure there is nothing wrong with your windows install:

  • @d3adst1ck

Are you logging into windows using a local account, or using your Microsoft account? The game tends to crash on startup if you are not logged into Windows with the Microsoft Account that purchased the game..

Strange. I don’t have that issue.

  • @entspeak They could have fixed it but it was pretty common back when the splash screen was a grey background with a small bit of artwork in the middle. If you logged into windows with a local account, the game would dump to desktop 100% of the time and the event viewer would show an authorization error. Once you switched your windows login to a microsoft account, game would work no problem.

  • @secretrabbit200

So with W-10 being an application type OS there are a few things to be wary of.

First make sure your applications are allowed certain accesses.

Next is to find out if SoT is the only game that crashes on start up.

If the application just crashes and goes back to desktop then something on your PC is eliminating the process of the actual game. Could be antivirus, could be allowances, could also be an overheating issue (however this usually ends with the whole PC shutting down not just the application, could also result in black screen, both events would lead to restarting your PC)

The comment "So I downloaded the game yesterday for winows 10 pc" leads me to assume you might have it installed on xbox. If this is possible, make sure you don't have any account conflicts with your xbox and PC.

Next possibility is that you might have had a corrupted file when you downloaded or installed the game. If you have any games from xbox app try those first. If they work then you know its not an issue with the app.

From the error codes you posted the game is just not opening for some reason which leads me to believe it could very well be antivirus, or just a falty game file. Might have to just re-download the game.

    Last bit of details.

Can you at least get to the Rare Logo when you start the game? or does it crash immediately after starting it?

  • Had the same issue before where i couldn't start the game at all, tried everything. Re-formated my computer and it fixed it but takes a while.

  • @d3adst1ck Tried all this, again no luck, thank you again for continuing to try :)

  • @xultanis-dragon No i dont also have this downloaded on an xbox, i have an xbox i used to use however i dont use it anymore, never had sea of thieves on it. On my xbox companion thing i only have the games i have downloaded on this pc. have tried redownloading the game a couple times already
i get the sea of thieves logo up for about 1 second in a windowed tab (i.e not fullscreen) and then it crashes

  • @itz-majman my computer is very new, built it a month ago, i would assume this wouldn't fix it

  • I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems, but the "Feedback and Suggestions" subforum is intended for alterations to gameplay features, not for troubleshooting.

  • with the recent update the game now works on my pc, thank you again for everyone that tried to help, it is much appreciated. Apologies that this was not the correct place to ask for help, however I had tried everywhere else at this point.
    Many thanks and happy sailing!
