What is the grind goal of Sea Of Thieves?

  • I believe in an interview article I was reading online, Rare mentioned that they don't really want people to "grind" and are steering away from that sort of gameplay. It should be more about creating adventures and interactive game play with other players than really grinding for the best gear. However, the farther you do progress, the more unique cosmetic gear you get so right away when someone sees you, they can tell you've played and earned those particular items. That to me is enough reason to fulfill quests (but I love adventuring and riddles and puzzles, so that in itself is fun for me).

  • @wrothamoeba388 I meant the thread...It started a month ago...

  • @glijmiddel the game, in my opinion, is more about the adventure rather leveling up and hitting some kind of end game. This isn't Destiny or The Division. It's a level playing field for people of all skill levels. There is no gear or abilities that make you better than someone else, and this is just the way that I like it honestly. I compare it to back when I used to play DayZ mod. There was no goal. Just myself, my rifle, and my squad hunting down other players that are trying to survive.

In the future, I think there will be enough events and content for people to be more satisfied with there being no progression. At launch, the game will be more of the core mechanics with the few trading companies.

  • @felid0r But in Dayz you have a set goal to get better weapons...this is dayz with no weapons to get stuff for...and no survival aspect XD

  • @the-warcrombie depends on what you mean by the survival aspect. Zombies? Too stupid to even be a threat. Hunger/thirst? Waste of time and should have just been taken out of the game. The only survival aspect of the game not getting killed by other players. Sea of Thieves has that same concept.

  • @felid0r zombies hunger and thirst aren't supposed to be a giant challenge. but they force you to areas where challenges occur. Even so, the point remains that theres a giant fun factor missing out which is finding weapons you like/are good with. instead you get that Winchester and you better be happy!

  • @glijmiddel what do you unlock irl when you beat someone else to a promotion🤔

  • @glijmiddel The main Goal in S.O.T is very simple. Be the best pirate and leave your mark on the world. This is a Skill based game meaning you fight for ranks, prestige, bragging rights. You look at it more as and RPG where your character naturally gets better regardless. of skill. The games that make you feel like a hero, a Bad***. The Grind as you but it is to fecilitate you and guide you to having an emergant experiance. As you journey to live your story of becoming a pirate legend. The cosmetics you earn just show off what you done. Like if some ask you were you get that scar you can then tell the epic story of that faitful day were you fought long and hard and at the end of the day you came out on top with that scar as a reminder. Skill is how you progress. Not items. Your Name, Your Rep, Thats all that matters here. This is a call back to a much simpler time in gaming were your REP in game is all that matter as it make people want to play with and agianst you. A Social Experience you don't find too much of out side of Pro-Gaming.

  • @glijmiddel we arent community of GRINDers. We just enjoy playing this game as it is.

  • Only people that do nothing productive asks for an entertainment system to give them something "grindy" to do.

If ever you'd come home from work after a long day...this is exactly the kind of game you want. You can jump right in, if you do mistakes there is no penaltie and you can laugh your behind off.

  • 'Grind' as a word suggests repetition & tedium. But, what one player feels is repetitious and tedious, another will find enjoyable...
There are no random drops in this game. No loot crates to gamble on and get good stuff or poor stuff out of- so the motivation to grind to hopefully get that sought after 'thing' isn't present. Everything we've seen in game so far is purchasable from the start- and the amount of cosmetics that can be bought will only increase on release and going forward...
Through the beta and the stress tests, the only voyages we've had have been chest hunts from the Gold Hoarders. If that got repetitious and boring, pirates went out looking for battles and different entertainment. As more trade companies appear, and more diverse options become available, then hopefully what is seen as a 'grind' will drop away.
There is so much to do in SoT- and it offers players so many opportunities to make their own entertainment- it's just a shame that a lot of people don't seem to grasp that and blame the game for not spoon feeding them every moment that they are playing...

  • THE GAME IS A SWAG OF

  • During the course of closed alpha, I've realized that Sea of Thieves is not the kind of game that you play 5 hours a day every day. I think it's been a little falsely advertised as a "huge adventure". It's a jump-in jump-out arcade-ish arena game and the faster others realize it (Rare too) the better. It wasn't my original plan but now I know that I'll just be playing it maybe 2-3 times a week for an hour or two. If I will try to play it longer at a time like my other games it will just get old reaaaaaallly fast and I will have a hard time convincing myself to launch it again. SoT is a great game, but it's also very different. Sorry folks, just being honest.

Worth the pouch of dubloons and the few hours it take to get this cosmetically outstanding outfit + comes with equipment and weapons of course!

This game is perfect as it is now.

The goal you're guys are looking for, is Pirate Legend. That is your goal in this game.
And even then, when you reach that goal. It unlocks a whole new set of things to do.
And trust me, there will be plenti rewards for the Legends.

It's a game where all players are equal - and are given the same options to fend for themselves.

I think this is way more interesting. Because the outcome of a battle will be purely based on the players skill and not because you were up against a certain class, item or weapon that might be broken or op.

  • The game is based around a no vertical progression model. I.E They will never add the ability to "level" your character or give you an advantage over someone else. Everyone is equal at all times, it comes down to player skill and abilities.

I expect they will add more weapons/items to make combat more varied, most cosmetics, pets, ship cosmetics etc etc.

But if you're looking for something MMO like, or "stats" to grind towards, this isn't going to be your kind of game.

  • @glijmiddel said in What is the grind goal of Sea Of Thieves?:

    @ethnine

@glijmiddel I feel like I've said this so much I am exhausted from saying it. Rare is supposed to have a ton of hidden content that they're saving, what that content is no one really knows. And that concerns me, a lot. It could be a whole host of ships and classes. It could be a plethora of gear and items, both some that are earned, and others that have to be found. It could be a massive diverse ship overhaul that gives us the ability to fully customize our pirate ships. It could be a crew management systems worthy of this game. It could be all of the above. We just don't know.

And that is a issue. How can I tell my friends in good faith that this game is going to be awesome! When I do not even know what content is available at release. If what content we've been shown is representative of what we will see, it's not looking good at all.

Exactly this, im afraid of No Mans Sky 2.0, even though i have more trust in Rare.
Most of my friends are biased because of the lack of content that's currently known.

thats what keeps my friends from pre ordering the game

  • I'm happy with what content we are told about on release so far. If the upcoming content is a little frequent, that would really benefit the game since there is some doubt for it all sometimes.

I am quite content with the end game that I've heard about, however.
