Map size?

  • Anyone have any info on how big the map is/how long it would take to cross it?

  • At the moment it probably takes about 20-30 mins of sailing to cross it, providing you have the wind in your sails and no one fighting you!!!

  • i always tought the map we have seen so far in alpha is not the actual map on release tho right? or did i misread that somewhere?

  • @nivekbe Im sure the map for alpha and the closed beta coming up will be minuscule to the full version.

  • I wonder if there will be different maps or even randomly created maps, this would make the game much more interesting in the long run.
Another important factor would be the player density, I hope the release and beta maps will be big with a lots of people on it.

  • @bespokemonty that is likely about right. However, like you outlined doing that with the wind as dynamic as it is, and how many rocks/islands there are, added in the number of players there are...I mean realistically it would take you an hour or two most likely. Plus I kind of wonder if the map we've seen will be the final map, I have this strange feeling that there might be even more islands and an increased map size.

  • It says "-World design
We are also working on the world design in terms of island location, number & location of outposts etc" here https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/25203/monthly-insider-report-december-2017

So it'll probably be about the same size. Oh, with an extra outpost I believe a dev said in one on the comments? it was a few days ago and CBA to go through the comments to look :p

  • This isn't procedurally generated?

  • @uvg-reign Yeah, I wouldn't see it getting much bigger. But that's good they're adding more islands and generally more content.

  • @nylewalsh Nope. Hand crafted :).

  • @wonkas-factory Inn-side story #12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5_NmS0D9Nc&index=12&list=PL51podOC3ZN34DHyz7qv0WSPT2XkbBbXT

Watch it from about 1:05. I don´t know if he is referring to the same map that i have played in the alpha though, the video is from Feb 2017.

  • @allfader121 Hmm, that is interesting. Did any of you notice regions in any of the videos or content we've seen lately? I personally haven't noticed any. But that is really interesting to know!

  • @ethnine Thing is, I kinda feel like I have seen those regions so I think the map on the table is from an earlier build. But I'm not sure.

  • @ethnine I have not really paid much attention to it in any of the recent videos but the three different regions have been in the game since the start I think, if that is what you are referring to. It is pretty easy to identify the Shipwreck Bay region but I never really notice a difference between the other two unless I am really paying attention.

  • @allfader121 I feel like that's a line that could be mistaken for something else.

I think he's talking about how small the map looks on the table vs being in the actual game. Like if someone had a poster of the map from Skyrim and then said it's considerably larger. You wouldn't really think, oh there's more to it than that? You would think that the game world is larger than that small poster.

It was kind of just an odd joke that really shouldn't be read into more than that.

  • don't know for sure yet, but I imagine it'll expand for release.

  • Can't remember where I read it, and of course it would all be subject to rumor, but I remember seeing that it could possibly take at least 8 hours to sail across the full world when the game is released. I just wonder how many islands and they have handcrafted for the game so far, must be immense!

i'm sure I read this also and after game released DLC's would make the map even bigger. I sure I read that, but don't quote me either on this

  • @wonkas-factory I don't feel time to cross is a valid enough question, such as considering time to sail to each island on the full Alpha map, park ship, explore island, and go to the next. That would certainly take you a considerable amount of time probably the grounds for the comments of "about 8 hours" I see.

I'm on the hand that believes the map as was present in Alpha/Beta is the same we see at launch, barring a few changes here or there. Which I think is a roughly 20 - 45 minute journey to simply go east end to west end, variables depending.

You have to consider, the map is designed to encourage encountering people within a set time frame varying on aggression levels of other crews seeking one another out and if it takes someone 3 hours to get to where everyone else is on a map that might not be fun for a lot of players.

  • @commando-slippy I believe it was IGN that said that, and Rare shot it down rather quickly after they published it. Let me see if I can find it real quick...

  • I'm sure the map in beta will be bigger than the alpha one because they expect more people (and likewise, I'm sure the launch map will be even bigger).
Getting the proper ratio of people to space has got to be one of their ..problems, as if you get too many people you'll have a lot of fighting (which deters the peaceful people) whereas if you have too few people, the world will seem empty, which is itself going to be an issue anyway due to the fact that it's mostly water.

This is even more of an issue when you consider that all the pirates on ships are players, no NPC's (they're all at ports buying your chests).
I'm sure all these calculations are done with their server instance logic, since --to my understanding--we're not all in the same world all at once (a scenario I don't think would be possible because of the above problems).

  • @typical-mat no, that's the full map of the entire game

if that's the case apologies - I couldn't remember who said it

  • @commando-slippy No apology necessary, I can't seem to find it anyhow. I believe it was IGN. Either way, it sounds like they're changing the map some before release :).

Yea i remember reading that somewhere too, the map we seen in alpha deffo is not that big then, tho it would suprise me if it really was that big, that would be awesome tho, but i doubt it, at least not at release.

  • @ethnine well all we can do now is wait to beta and wait to see what changes have arisen good or bad

  • I heard months ago that we were playing 1/4 of the map the game will launch with. So we are probably playing one corner...

  • I think the betas will be the same map...

  • id personally like to see more ships on the sea this time round, as some times you found lots but most time it was 5 max then hardly any

  • @commando-slippy I prefer the rarity (at times) of seeing other players. It makes the sight of sails on the horizon that much more special and intense.

  • @icecreammanatee yeah I agree that really had the affect but some times you would go hours if not longer with out seeing any

  • While the map size in Alpha might get them by for a little while after the launch, it needs to be bigger if they want the longevity.

  • I’m sure we can expect new dlc and increase in maps
