Hourglass Idea: Visible ELO System for Fairer Fights + Progression Rewards

  • Hey,

Due to the talk about the new hourglass improvements, it made me think if we could ever see in the future a visible elo system that works on matchmaking. This could help make fights fairer, see your skill level, and give a clear representation of others' skill levels, too. On another note, it has already been said, but more rewards for the hourglass would make the mods much more used, as who doesn't love some good old cosmetics?

    Thanks for reading my idea.

  • Your skill level vs a new account skill level will be the same.
Why? Vets in high level can simply make new free accounts and start fighting low levels. Dominant in process.

Plus that just opens a door for those to gloat and toss out “haha I’m better than you. Look at my lvl”
We don’t need that unequal playerbase.

  • How will this make fights fairer? Are you suggesting you get to choose your opponents?

  • No, if you make a new account sure you might go against a new player, but after that it will give you almost a predicted level for hourglass and the matchmaking would be based of that, for example if you are very good in all part of pvp for your first match you will have a level that fits that skill.

  • @spookydegree366

Not if you lose on purpose with new account, fooling the system into thinking your that bad and get good once a while or suddenly match with someone who does poorly.
Frankly, Skill Level..in this type of game is not workable. You can have good days and bad, or bad weeks. That isn't predictable, nor is which server you connect with. Maybe you join a server that happens to be better for the other guy.
Or better yet, things happen...like another ship, Skeleton ship, Fog, Storms.

  • It wouldn’t make a huge difference, SoT can be shared between accounts on Xbox and Steam and so people would just create new accounts to play against less skilled players.

  • @BurnBacon
Please stop spreading misinformation about how most modern skill based matchmaking works. Many of the things that you mentioned including “having a bad week” are essentially dealt with by these systems by using variables to represent uncertainty or elasticity.

  • @rare-jumbie I get where you're coming from, but smurfing is a real issue in games with SBMM and a visible elo might worsen that. Just gives people looking to tank their elo to "stomp" swabbies an easier way to figure out most efficient tanking method. Also the elo system in HG is not that great imo. When I was teaching my PS5 buddy the ropes we played vs a double golden skelly crew in the first week of him playing the gamemode... I don't think a visible MMR will do us any favors.

  • @daniux5313

I never gave any opinion on visible ELO or MMR. I'm not "coming from" anywhere. I was simply telling another forum member to stop spreading misinformation on the nature of skill based matchmaking.

  • Ok real question does ANYONE truly know how this all works?

    I’m like 280 servant
    202 guardian

I have fought lvl 22 bots that can barely aim the weapon and I’ve fought dbl gold. I have dumpstered someone to turn around and get smashed through the sea floor.

I don’t think I’ve ever had much consistency in match ups.

  • Hourglass level is not a measure of skill, but a measure of how long you have spent in the game mode. I have come across people with double gold who I beat so easily it was like they were sleep cannoning, and I have come across sailors with fully white ships who can TDM like gods. The current SBMM of HG is based on win/loss rating, which is more accurate, but they don't want that data to be public because players would use it to try to feel superior. They already do that with allegiance and titles like Shrouded Ghost

  • @potatosord I don’t think it is though, let me explain. I was board one day and while working from home just loaded in and “loss farmed” for a few hours to see if it did anything.

I don’t think it did. I also know that a curse doesn’t me good, but you get what I mean by double cursed. They were very good and I can respect the HG grind. I just shouldn’t face those players if it’s based of win/loss and I played a 3 hour loss streak.

The match making is super inconsistent. I couldn’t imagine loading in and thinking cool let’s try this and boom fight double gold fight. Why would they continue that grind? We need a better idea of the matchmaking instead of the same EAC approach “we have anti-cheat” really? Doesn’t seem like it’s doing much.

I’m not upset I just love the speculation we get left to

  • @jon-sea-nah I'm not saying I want the system to not work, I think the SBMM system should work better, the issue with that is matchmaking times. It already tries to match you, but every time it shows the "Looking for an opponent, go to the war map to cancel" message, it is expanding the scope of the search. So if your w/l ratio is 0.5, it will try to give you other people in the 0.45 to 0.55 range first, then after 5 or so minute it tries to give you 0.4-0.6 range, and so on, until you unfortunately are in a 0-1 range, which would mean you have a chance to queue against anyone from a new account loss farming to a double gold world record holder. I want the SBMM system to work I just don't think this persons idea is a good one. Publicly visible ratings will only lead to elitism, as it always has.
