Please say the emporium is to purchase skins etc with real money!

  • Hello all,

I've just loaded into Sea of Thieves after a busy month and noticed the emporium store... Please can we confirm what this is?

I hope this is the ability to purchase skins we want for the game instead of the grind. They are all cosmetic so it affects no one and would help bring revenue in and I hope to god it is because then I can buy everything I want happily!

It's not a microtransaction and I know some people would complain but this is a cosmetic skin and only effects the person who uses real money, so it's not bad I think but having the ability to purchase skins with money is amazing for us people who have a work, families and other things to do and less to play you know.

Just need some clarity what this actually is.

    Thank you,

  • @almighty-je5u5 as far as I know, it's just another "outpost", but without the factions...
So you can buy the arena stuff outside of the arena...

There won't be any microtransactions for ingame money or cosmetics...the only thing what will come to buy with real money are the pets...hope they come out soon...

    Ah okay, thank you.

Sadly I really wish we had the ability to purchase skins with real money.

  • @almighty-je5u5 the game is just about cosmetics...it's like asking in a rpg to byu abilities for real money

  • Yeah. People have no idea how much people would pay for both cosmetics and pets.

It’s crazy but the truth. Sea of Thieves will also live with much steam thanks to it too.

Here’s hoping it’s fleshed out as everything else released thus far. This by far being the most important for a variety of reasons.

  • @schwammlgott its not, abilities give you advantages, skins dont?

  • @algorum
Technically, they have already sold cosmetics for real money, they simply bundled them in with other products. The Seagate SoT 2 TB drive came with the ebony blunderbuss. The SoT Limited Edition Controller came with the Ferryman's Cosmetic set and weapons, which is partially why a new, sold-out controller goes for 200-300 dollars. The cosmetics alone sell for at least $80 or more. They have given cosmetics away at big events that are costly to attend. Rare just doesn't charge in the GAME! haha

  • There are tons and tons of games out there making money just of skins alone, they are purely cosmetic and offer no benefit to the consumer what so ever, but to stand out and look the way they want with the money they earn to spend.

I would happily purchase the skins for a boat, cannons, characters, hats, pets etc etc with real money because it benefits me with what I want to do, also it helps the Devs a little with some revenue coming in for a cosmetic item, so it's a win win.

No one can complain because it does not improve the way I aim, or play, it's a skin! - So the people who want to cry about "Microtransactions" on skins are the people who are not worth the time to talk to because it does not affect them at all for skins already in the game, I just work and decide to by the skin instead of grinding for them!

  • @almighty-je5u5 god I hope not I don't want to spend anymore money for this game in real life if's a in game thing I'll be fin with it

  • @almighty-je5u5 I would be fine if it only applied to skins that were available from the beginning of the game to everyone, as well as specific skins that were only available there.

But the cosmetics unlocked by leveling factions, or completing commendations should remain locked through those means. Those skins have actual meaning in game as when you see someone in Athena gear, you know they worked hard for it and are probably an experienced player.

Allowing all skins to be bought through money removes the biggest incentive in in the game for completing a lot of the later game levels and commendations. It would also be kind of a slap to the face of all the loyal players that have been playing since launch, and worked very hard for those cosmetics.

But yeah special paid skins and default skins that are already available through gold to new players would have really no negative effect, and could help generate some more revenue (although I doubt they need it with all the money Microsoft makes through game pass players).

Clipped that there because that is all I need to comment on. You basically just said "I don't want to play the game, but if I could buy the cosmetics I would."

Why get in game at all if you don't want to invest time into it? I am curious.

  • @almighty-je5u5

Hahaha this isn't Fortnite where we're going to spend $7.99 USD to purchase a new jacket for our Pirate. It'll never be that way. It would suck if they did, because it devalues the meaning of the in game achievement you accomplished to get the cosmetic.

You could get your Legendary Cannons by investing the time and effort to earn "Legend of the Sea of Thieves" or you could just spend $8 bucks on the Pirate Emporium.

Not only does that suck the fun out of it, but it also ruins the perception of seeing those legendary cannons and thinking of the challenge one went through to get it. That's no good.

I'm sorry but having a job and a family does not justify making everything easily obtainable in 5 seconds of gameplay.... there are always going to be things that require more than a casual amount of time invested. I have a full time job too, but I'm not asking for bars to be lowered.

Pirate emporium will be for pets when they are released.

  • Rare is a shining example of how to build a great game for the gamers. Look at every game that comes out with micro transaction and tell me they put the same care and effort in there games. They don't but what they do do is either withhold content to sell or base there game around those micro transactions And you want rare to do that? They have and are making money from the sale of the game and game pass. And are back by one of the richest companies in the world There fine and doing amazing work but I get it there are lazy people out there that just want to buy there wants instead of earn them. You people have already greenlite an industry to behave this way so maybe shut it and put some work in and EARN IT.
I work full time make a lot of money and have 4 kids and I have esrned everything I have through work take your lazy attitude to take two ea and activation they have the games you seek.

  • I'm not going to insult you like everyone else but i disagree completely. The whole point of the game is the experience, immersion and to show how good you are at the game. If people could just buy legendary outfits there would he no point in earning it for us who don't want to spend extra money and it would get rid of the immersive concept that they wont sell it to you until you prove your worth. The other inevitable thing that comes with microtransactions is exclusive content. Where now theres some guy running around in the coolest outfit possible and no one else can get it unless you spend money which isn't right. Thats not gaming should be about and its certainly not the focus of this game. I think and hope that pirate emporium is going to be a leaderboard system. Where we can see the best pirates on the seas and compare ourselves to them.

  • @almighty-je5u5 People like you are the reason companies like EA are thriving and why games like Fallout 76 & Anthem are now a norm in the gaming community.

I can’t believe this guy is so jittery and happy about a microtransaction store. To each his own, I guess.

  • @almighty-je5u5 Also @Schwammlgott literally has no idea what he’s talking about. The Pirate Emporium has already been confirmed to be a MTXs store.

What he’s talking about is the Arena Outpost that was made in the middle of the map. That’s not the Pirate Emporium. I don’t know where he got that.

  • @kraken-slap sagte in Please say the emporium is to purchase skins etc with real money!:

@schwammlgott its not, abilities give you advantages, skins dont?

    A bit late that I reply...but finally...
You get this wrong...this is a game ONLY about cosmetics...asking to buy in this game to purchase cosmetics with real money is the same as asking in a, for example, RPG to byu abilities with real money

  • @zaannox sagte in Please say the emporium is to purchase skins etc with real money!:

Oh...I guess it's that on the main menu, right?

  • @schwammlgott Ye, I have no idea how you got it mixed up with the Arena Outpost lol

  • @zaannox English isn't my native language...so I thought this is that outpost...

  • It's already been said but I believe micro-transactions are only for the pets and not items that can be acquired in game.
I'm really glad you can't purchase skins (clothing and cosmetics etc.) with real money as they are the only measure of progress in the game. The only thing that keeps most people playing is trying to get enough gold to buy the items they want.
I do hope however that the items bought through micro-transactions are also available for in game currency. It would be an added bonus if the "parrot" you get in game is a different colour to the ones available on the store.

  • -"Please say I don't have to play the game I purchased."

    That's all I read.

  • I'm always amazed to see how people can like microtransactions.
While I can understand the want to buy stuff in stead of unlocking it trough gameplay I have to say two things about the matter:

    1. Obtaining cosmetics in SoT doesn't take long. It's quite easy to get a nice set. Sure buying everything is a timesink but you can't equip everything at the same time so there's no need for it, just for completionists.
    2. Microtransactions often go hand in hand with rebalancing gameplay. Think games are grindy? Just wait untill the game gives you an option to pay for progress. Suddenly it will become a lot more grindy.
Example: LOTR Shadow of War had singleplayer microtransactions (Lol wut?) and the game was so grindy for it that they had to rebalance it after they removed the lootboxes.

So I hope that when they do microtransactions it won't be on stuff we already have in game, otherwise it greed might get the better of Rare and have them alter the game. (and before you say Rare won't do that Rare is wholesome and good, I point at Blizzard with their greed and store mounts that would otherwise just be obtainable in game).

  • In-Game micro-transactions, whether they affect game play or not, are the bain of video gaming. If an item is added to a game, the only way to obtain it should be obtained is by playing, either through natural story progression or through an event. Unfortunately, the need for sustainable income, and companies like EA and Rockstar/Take-Two, have set a precedent with building their games around micro-transactions and now everyone has been jumping onto the bandwagon.

If someone wants to spend real money on a game, that's their prerogative, but whether it's an item that affects game play or not is irrelevant because it still encourages the developer to continue with the micro-transaction model. As of now, it's just pets for SoT, but if Rare makes a lot of money through micros, don't think for a second they won't consider other ways to use that system.

  • @almighty-je5u5 they may add cosmetics to the store that are only obtained through the store which would be cool but not stuff that has to be earned like the sea dog weapons

  • Hey,

I think your idea sounds great @ALMIGHTY-JE5U5

Being able to buy past timed events with real money because you didn't have time before to grind enough doubloons for the gear on sale at that time or to get on the game at a certain time.

The people who earned them through the game, of course, got them for free but for those who missed them or weren't able to get on Sea of Thieves due to of course work, families or other technical situations.

For example, My Xbox One X had the green screen of death one time while I had been grinding to the pirate legend before the anniversary update, I wasn't able to make it to legend before the deadline seeing as I had to send my Xbox overseas to Microsoft to be fixed. I thought maybe I'd have a chance if I bought the anniversary update edition as well to get the gear but sadly buying that extra edition just gave me a few in-game bits of loot.

If RARE is able to make this a real thing I'd be so grateful to have the opportunity to buy the things I missed out on such as the Forsaken Shores gear as well. You can get everything except for the weapons and ship customisations, like come on I wanna match it all xD

Thanks to anyone who reads this I wish the RARE staff would read this post as well as the comments such as mine.

My question to that reply is, wouldn't it be fair if they priced them pretty high accounting for the game hours spent to obtain them such as $50.00 for the ship customisations like a DLC price for the game items because you weren't able to get them in the time frame?

Joe neate said in the latest dev update that 3 different items types will be added to the mircotransaction store.

    • Pets
    • Cosmetics as for example ship hull, sails, etc.
    • Emotes

Also the Emporium store is i believe where you will buy these things. But i dont know that for sure, nor do i know if it comes into the game (for example an shop on the outposts), or it becomes a menu system.

  • @mentimjojo well yes and no, 1 this is a necro topic that has been revived.

2 yes they will offer in game cosmetic but more linked to games and stuff (like with the banjo and kazooie, perfect dark, killer instinct and halo themed cosmetics.

@deckhands a lock before this one grows out of control again ?

I know, thats why i added the ;). And we are gonna see, joe neate said something about special cosmetics, so we are gonna have to wait.

Edit: Changed the first message to be more clear about what i meant.

  • Hi everyone,

As this thread is several months old I will be locking it. If you would like to continue this discussion please create a new thread for the subject.

    Thanks!
