The great shame and missed opportunity

  • Myself and a group of friends were Beta and Day one players and have had our fair share of fun in Sea of Thieves. The problem is that most of that fun came from our own camaraderie, banter and ability to create our own content and enjoyment.

Rare have created a beautiful world however since day one it has felt a mile wide but only an inch deep. There is very little game here. What little to do is so repetitive that it very quickly becomes boring. Grinding for Rep and grinding for cosmetic reward slowly becomes a bit pointless.

The PvP can be fun, but it can also be very much not-fun for numerous reasons as countless posts on this forum will prove.

Some of the best moments I've had on this game, no, all of the best moments I've had in the Sea of Thieves have been instances where multiple ships and crews have come together with a common goal and with voice communication have managed to organize themselves to raid islands, kill "the" megalodon, ghost ships, forts, co-ordinated and agreed PvP or just larking around and having fun on a boat.

One year later and the game still doesn't have an in game "player hub" like an island where PvP is restricted and players can round up a crew if they want to or just show off their sweet cosmetics. A safe haven where combat or alliances can be organised, and solo players may get a chance to group up with other willing players rather than feeling alone in a world full of frustrating peril.

I will list some improvements that I would like to see. some may agree and some may not but this is my feedback and take it as you will.

The game would be much improved if there was more depth and clarity to the following points:

    1. Lore: Why am I a pirate? Who am I and how did I get here? What’s the story?

    2. Motivation: What should I do? Why should I do these things?
A: for monetary and cosmetic reward
B: To learn and open up more story!

    3. Reward: What tangible benefit will I get for doing the things? How have I improved for having done the things?

    4. Player Hubs: If all I get is cosmetics and my own personal experience then let me show it off. Or let me offer help to others or request help from others and form in-game community without risk. ie. An island with no PvP for those who want it where quest chains can start or Arena events can be posted.

    5. Arena: This will be fun for a while I'm sure, but it shouldn't be accessed from the title screen as if it were a different game inside a game. It should be somewhere I have to sail to reach. Even if I must then "teleport" to the Arena servers at that point.

    6. World Creatures: The Kraken, Megalodon's, Ghost Ship's - All of this needs to be less frequent or confined to area's of the map that a player can choose to venture out too/summon. The past few times i've attempted to play, I've encountered almost all of these, in the space of 1-2 hours play. It slows the game down, there's no real feeling of surprise, danger or fun to it anymore, the frequency has really taken the shine off.

    7. PvE story, Proper quests and questing with Voice acting!

    8. NPC's that are NOT pirates.

    9. Island towns with law’s and rules etc.
All these things should be self-explanatory but would improve this world and add the much-needed depth that is sorely lacking.

To conclude. SoT is a beautiful game with lovely water, ships, physics etc but it misses so much of it’s potential. Sandbox is boring. Give me structure, give me purpose. Give me goals and achievements that I can enjoy and be proud of. Add more depth to this world and it could be great, but these small bolt-on expansions are just to a shallow and are simply not the answer. Please Rare, give us a game.

  • So uhh...

Have you turned on the game today by chance?

Exactly what I was thinking. He's going to be so happy! 😂

  • @chronodusk Today's update adds none of what he's asking for. Tall Tales might be the closest thing but even that still doesn't quite satisfy the need for story content.

  • @Chronodusk
@galactic-geek yeah it's a start but it's 12 months in and it's the only reason i'm firing up the game again. It won't add the full depth but I think it's definately the right direction.

  • I would say a 15 to 25 hour story arc with the promise of more stories to be added in future is quite a substantial answer to those who craved structure and Lore and direction and purpose. The hunters call will add loads more depth and fun things to do, and the arena is the beginning of an entirely new mode that will only get better with time, and also has a hub area. I really don't see what more Rare could do to satisfy people, but that's just my humble opinion

  • @rip-chongy Try to force update it if you're on PC, the game is live and pirates are sailing the Anniversary seas!

  • @rip-chongy Thanks for letting us know, it's useful for if any other pirates are encountering similar problems :)

Are you guys playing right now? I haven't even seen the option to update yet...

If you are on xbox simply hard reset your console and check for updates, if there are none then load the game up, it should then tell you that there is an update available.. Happy sailing!
Edit.. See you already did that, you posted as I did, glad you got it sorted matey :)

  • @blackelite-id16

You seem to go from thread to thread being pessimistic, I get the need for devils advocate and all that but I think from what we've seen and heard so far from Rare, the original poster probably will be satisfied as we get a detailed story campaign to a whole new area, brimming with lore and cosmetics (are there cosmetics?,I would think so). You appear to enjoy making provocative threads, which (from a feedback standpoint) can probably be good, but upon subjects you haven't fully explored. I mean no personal offence it's just disheartening to see you put a negative spin on everything that Rare does before anyone understands it fully.

  • Arguably the most constructive criticism I've seen here in a while, that original post deserves commendation. If only all the forum criers did it like you have here.

Sidenote: the word ch*ff is banned in the original posters name so I couldn't @ him

On PC, I left the MS Store open on the Sea of Thieves page when I left for work so it would start auto downloading while I was away, but it didn't work as I noticed when I drove home for lunch.

I had to manually navigate to "Sea of Thieves: Anniversary Edition" on the MS Store and it updated. It was almost like it was being treated as a separate game like Insiders is, but once I got there the update started downloading just fine!

  • @(really... Why can you use a name that isn't allowed by filter?) While I think there is some great input here and might make for a great game...

I think you're just looking for a different game. This is an open world sandbox game where you have the freedom to create your own adventures.

The game you're describing sounds more like an mmo with linear, endless progression and a pve story focus.

From what I've read, that's not really what the developers are after and from my experience, it's not really the direction I'd like the game to take.

Are you sure you're not just bored with the game in general? That does happen.

  • I often wonder why the player base as a whole don't mobilise and create some of the things themselves, such as greater story content and 'safe-zones'. I have seen a couple of communities doing that, so perhaps players should join them for adventure and stories? I bet there are some people out there with awesome ideas and stories that they can come up with from the content in sea of thieves, and could set up all sorts of quests to locate hidden places or solve riddles.

As for a safe-zone, if there was one designated by the community (for example Golden Sands) then we would have some very interesting interactions. Perhaps server caps are too low for this, however it could still work. If the majority of people who played had a mutual agreement not to attack one-another at the specific location, then people could link up there and meet. Of course, there'd be those that wouldn't agree and would attack, but then those who do agree could attempt to defend and band together to 'keep the peace'. What an interesting dynamic that might create on a server full of players!

  • @sir-chuf

as for topic 9 I have something to add I loved the idea of a city with laws and rules and I think a city like this would be perfect to be a meeting hub between players having even missions in the city itself related to pve for example an attack on the catacombs or an assault on the bank that would occasion in the persecution of the group by members of the royal navy, taking advantage of that I spoke about the navy I want to make clear that it would like that it had guilds or factions not only of pirates but of officers of the navy of the crown.

sorry my english I used google translate because I'm brazilian

  • @generalbuckfoi I'm not satisfied with where the game is and the general direction its been going, so yes I'm negative about the updates so far. It has absolutely nothing to do with getting some kind of enjoyment out of provoking people, I'm just not enjoying SoT in the slightest and have been holding on to the hope that eventually this game will get to where it needs to be. Skeleton Ships were a much appreciated addition and so is the new Tall Tails, but that's all pointless to me if they don't offer a way to enjoy these encounters/stories privately with my friends. I've explored these subjects plenty, they're just not things I feel add any substantial substance to SoT, you're welcome to disagree. If I try to be positive about the things I want to see added/changed I'm generally met with personal attacks and "GET GUD" which is totally constructive. Also what was even negative about my post? I was just pointing out that the features he was talking about, were absolutely not apart of the update, and that Tall Tails didn't quite add the depth of story content that I'm hoping for, that's not negativity that's an opinion.

  • @blackelite-id16 have you played tall tales yet? In its entirety? Cos if you haven't then you cant really pass judgement, not attacking you simply stating a fact :)

  • To iterate slightly, if a 15 to 25 hour long story split into 9 sizeable chunks that can be soloed or played Co operatively, with full voice acting and new tools and game mechanics with the promise of more to come doesn't add the depth of story you were hoping for, then maybe you could tell us what will?
