AI crew mates

  • Following a rather unpleasant solo experience with a skalleon in the insider programme, I had a thought... As usual, apologies if this has already been proposed.

How about when you're a crewman down we get the option of an AI crew-mate? Nothing fancy just the same stuff AI dudes already do on a skelly ship, you know, simple deck fighting, cannons and patching (also harmonising your shanties would be awesome). Nothing that's going to be hell to code. It'd sure help the general game along a touch to have a bit of patching help if you get that lucky shot off the ship or are desperately trying to fight off the kraken. Yeah I know if you're good enough you can be a hero and do it solo, but it's not always fun.

If you don't like the idea of a robotic AI pirate, how about a skull set in the wall below decks that you could summon a subservient skeleton with, maybe it glows when one is available / you're left on your own in game. You could change the AI focus to fighty, defensive or peaceful (for diplomacy), which would change the skull colour on the wall. Also if it's a skelleton, it could xylophone its own ribs when you strike up a tune...

Shouldn't be made to be too hard to kill or otherwise unbalanced or more effective than another player, just a helping hand when your regular crew-mate hasn't logged on yet or accidentally kicks their xbox off in the middle of a kraken...

  • You might want to remove the part about the insider test. That's a break of nda and could get you removed from the program

  • @plasticdeath Interesting idea, but I think the main issue is that far too many people would use AI crew mates and very quickly it would dilute the Sea of Thieves experience. Perhaps if the AI crew mates were more like an item you could get, similar to the row boat. Even larger groups of players would be able to get one, but it would require them finding one and function much the way you described, except they would be able to die and not respawn and you would be limited to one AI crewmate.

  • @blazedrake100 Thanks, it did cross my mind but as I haven't actually talked about any content I thought no-one would mind. It only had relevance as due to it being play-testing I wasn't too fussed about losing my ship.

  • @geobiwan Yeah I'm conscious that this would be the case. A one-life consumable skelly crew mate would actually be a pretty good idea, so if it dies tough potatoes. I'd be very keen to keep it far inferior to even an average crew, maybe just a cutlass bearing bad shot who could slowly patch.

You should only get one and only if you're down a crew-mate, no unfair advantages.

  • I like this idea. Maybe you could rent them at the tavern?

  • @princes-lettuce or the order of souls tent...

This is the only way I'd be ok with it. And I solo a lot.

  • I don't see anything bad about this idea, i play sot now and then I would play it more if there was a AI skeleton on board helping. Sloop 1, Brig 2, and Gally 3. Only if there's not real players on board. The only problem I can see with it is immersion if that's the right word.

  • It would probably be the death of open crew, but I would rather a low skill skeleton than a rando. I usually sail solo anyway, so a skeleton would just be cool to have around.
