  • so to start off i love this game more then any other.
ive watched every thing i could since the first trailer ever dropped.
i played the alpha and betas, and worked for months sailing alone to rank up.

but now i have some questions.

lets start with a simple one.
Why did you make us team with other ships to complete the hungering deep?

then a little more recent question.
you tell us in the alphas and betas to plunder others, ok awesome. but now were to team with others?
i have had zero luck with the alliance flag its only brought misfortune and anger. here's an example.

just before righting this post i was on SOTS for about an hour and a half i managed to loot 3 sunken ships and even kill some skeles. but after selling my loot as i was fixing my audio settings i heard the sound of a player walking, i thought to myself "ill be nice and try to team up" but no answer. "ok well maybe he doesnt have a mic" i tried typing, no answer "oh wait no typing on console ill tell him to use the coms wheel to answer". still no answer, he then proceeds to run onto my ship and hide in a corner i come in blunderbluss drawn ready to fire. i gave one last warning "i will shoot come out with the weapon down". with no answer i rushed down and aimed right at him firing the weapon, "No hit marker? we both shot at the same distance and he took 3/4 my health and i didnt even get a hit marker?" fine i thought its a shotgun i eat some bananas and redrew my weapon only to be instantly destroyed with one shot from his gun. full health and all. so on the ferry i decided to get ready for my plan. i re-spawned on my ship which was now sailing away. a explosive barrel time bomb killing me before my screen could even finish its fade in. all 200 cannon balls, 100 bananas. and 75 planks lost. with nothing to show for it.

and yeah i know all others users will just reply with the whole "git gud" or "you just suck" i may suck at the game (trust me im bad but i have good aim) but when this story can be told almost word for wrod 5 times in the last week of playing i just cant see what to do.

so now that my story out of the way ill ask the second question. what is your games, game play? because no one seems to know. do we plunder and kill other crews? do we team up against ai? whats going on here.

again im a huge fan of this game i just dont understand it half the time.

now terrible sorry for ranting. i understand if i dont get any responses it's totally ok.

Cutting to the chase; It's both. The key to Sea of Thieves is that you can play how you want to play. It's part of what makes it so exciting, that you never know what to expect from your fellow players, so every time you log in, it's a different experience.

Events, like the Hungering Deep, offer players a new way to play, and often incentivizes a particular play style, i.e. teamwork, but it's never required.
It's up to you to determine what your game is going to be like, whether you forge alliances, or sink any ship you come across, and this goes for every other player you come across.

    If you're up for some more reading, and hopefully mild entertainment, I've written a few Tavern Tale stories about me and my crews adventures, and here's two that I think you'll find relevant to your thread;

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/61416/the-unsinkable-ii-captain-s-log-day-36

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/61745/the-unsinkable-ii-captain-s-log-day-41

The first is our story from The Hungering Deep where we ended up teaming up with another Galleon and Sloop crew, to slay the mighty Megalodon.
The second is a story about how delicate alliances and trust can be on the Sea of Thieves.
Hopefully they'll help to illustrate that the unpredictability is part of Sea of Thieves' charm and sense of adventure.

Well one way to look at it is to say obviously it's a sanbox and watch as the wonderful stories unfold as anything can happen with so much unknown in which the next ship you see on the horizon will act towards you.

I for one don't buy into that. Again some will say you don't have to do the added content either as nobody is forcing you even though it kind of is that way because all the items or doubloons you will lose out on. Not to mention the timed events also push you to complete it even if it's not a good time for you. So long story short I believe we are being bounced around from friendly allies one day to ok let us kill each other a week from now because the devs still aren't sure as to how to market this game in the long run. As is the PvE players seem to want to be left alone more from PvP so hence alliances. On the other hand the PvP players are like screw the alliance I want blood and power so here comes Reapers Mark and cursed cannonballs. Just my thoughts but it really does feel like these are not random events to give a little bit to everyone but more like a game that still doesn't know what group of players (future income) it wants to target, not having a clear sense of direction so they are testing to try and find out what works. Yes the game is still growing yet I can't help but feel it is missing some major core rules that are needed going forward.

  • @captn-stormrage What about players who want to do both equally? I'm considered a PvPer just because somtimes i just want more action and i think PvP is lacking in the game as most content was geared towards PvE. Thankfully thats starting to change with CCB's and maybe Reapers mark. I think this game will only work so long as both the PvP and PvE elements both are kept in equal standing. Thats very hard to do as each affects the other. I epect high quality of content and balanced gameplay from both sides.

  • I play mostly for the lore updates in this game and enjoy just sailing with good crew mates that I meet in the community discord more so when we form alliances for athena runs so that I can get that much closer to completing my screenshot database with current skins/cosmetics in the game for what I am able to access.

I PvP when I need to defend myself and my ship more than I would just attacking another ship since most people are attacking us at that point.

As for being forced with teaming with others they have heard the feedback since thrones on this and this is why you can if you want the challenge whilst the event is still going take a brig or galleon crew and try solo crew it with them (its possible I have done a 3 man brig run for the battle of the dancing demon when it was up) and the only issue now is now making sure they balance out the times of the stuff in the events so that people are not time locked out of certain portions due to timezone and general other time constraints they have.

I made a post about a PL Code (mainly cause of the complaints about most of us that I have been seeing) that is from my perspective and experiences thus far with the tools they have been releasing and it should answer any questions as to how I play this game.

  • alright so i've pinged a few of you here sorry just wanted an easier post to write.

@enf0rcer of course they need to be kept. but the problem is that's kinda hard in the gaming world. but it is possible, personally i think rare isn't taking the time to think that this issue (issue in my opinion). and perhaps a way to select weather you want to join a pvp or pve server is needed. i'm great with a sniper and one heck of a cannon man but i play solo i don't have friends and i don't socialize with others well, so because of this its hard for me to defend and keep myself from crashing into rocks.

    so because of the grand amount of pvp players is greater then pve players i just spend all my time in shores of plenty because it feels like the least amount of people are there. but now with the addition of the skeleton ships i have to deal with even more players in shores of plenty, and these players (not every player just the ones that refuse to use voice coms) don't care about a sloop they just shoot it down and plunder away. I've even started solo sailing the new ship type and the galleon just to get others to leave me alone;

but whats funny to me is well, I'm a simple poor merchant living on around 6000 gold. (i'm not joking) so to have the loot set for me to kill a skeleton ship giving me enough credits to buy dukes 10k gold bag, well its upsetting to lose it all with in 3 seconds.

after exiting the ferry it takes me 15 seconds for my screen to fade back in.
Why? i understand you have to loud the world around me that makes since, but why does this take them 15 seconds?
if it wasn't 15 seconds i could have saved my ship last night.

and just to clarify i have a great pc.

but my last point is the quantity of players on a single server is not consistent, i once got in a game and saw no ships for 2 hours. i got in a game this morning and ran into 7 ships with in 20 minutes

@Captn-StormRage i totally agree and understand your statement it. during all the alphas and betas it was KILL, KILL, KILL. but now they want us to team? i am truly starting to think i should revolt against the merchants and set my eyes only for plundering so I might me able to survive.

I would hate to betray my brother-en but its what must be done to play this game.

@Tundra-793 the game is to be played how you want to play, agreed.
How-ever this is extremely difficult for solo players the game is designed for groups and not keeping in mind people like me as well as literal tons of others.

When all you want to do is sail for the merchants its sad. the final beta had players whom respected your choice in company. you'd fly a flag to say who you were with. and most the time merchants got left alone. sure there were still a few people sailing as plunderers but even then when you saw that flag you would run. it feels to me that the roleplay of this game is lost and its disappointing to see this respect lost to the ages.

  • @sedwity First off i'm sorry to hear that you don't socilaze well with others as thats one of the core experiences of this game. That's why they don't want seperate servers. Hopefully if you would like help in having a positive social experiance there are many upstanding pirates here who would gladly lend a hand inculding myself. I also had issues socializing with others and gaming helped me through that. I'm sure it could work for you. Also yes the population on the servers tend to vary wildly due to issues with server migration but just let you know there are only ever 6 ships in one session at a time so the most vessels you can encounter at once is 5. Lastly you say you stick to shores of plenty, both the skelly ships and skull forts act as beacons for hotspots for PvP so when the skelly ship and forts are in your area i suggest trying out going to the other areas to farm and explore you will have a much greater chance of avoiding an unwanted encounter.
