TORTUGA, social space

  • I would like to suggest that Rare should add 1 island to the game. It doesn't have to be named TORTUGA but it could serve a vital roll in the game.

Like other outposts players would be able to purchase cosmetics IE: ships, clothing, trinkets, and weapons. As well as enjoy a pint at the tavern with friends and foes alike.

Unlike other outposts players would not be able to acquire voyages or turn in chests, skulls, or livestock. Players could use this island as a true social space to meet up with other crews to befriend or behead. A solo player could meet up with a 3 man galleon. And merge together to form a 4 man crew. 2 sloops could form together to make a galleon. Players that want to go after Order of Souls voyages can team up with other like minded players. This island, and only this island should remain neutral. Leave the rest of the in game world as it is.

This is a PIRATE game after all.

The only issue i have is the neutral space. This will be cheesed hard by people camping outside the zone firing in or using it to go in and out of to avoid combat. I like the idea of a social hub area a lot but its a pirate game afterall so if people wanna get rouwdy and kill then all the power too them. Maybe have stocks there that people on the island can vote you to if you cause trouble.

  • As a side note if Rare implements a bounty system this island could be used by players to place bounties on others at the cost of their own coin.

  • @ve111a I do see your point of view of other circling the island like hungry sharks. However many that go there more then likely won't have loot and are there to share stories or look for crew.

Lol has this stopped griefers killing people leaving an outpost with no loot?

  • It is wishful thinking but I like to believe that Rare is already working on it for the Golden Age of Piracy (that is yet to come).

  • @ve111a no but with this being a game they could put a maelstrom at each of the 4 corners that can transport your ship and/or crew to the social space. And when leaving players would be placed outside of render distance. Much like the patch with sinking another crews ship

  • @ve111a On the one hand the griefers could make neutral island a bit problematic. On the other depending on how many people were around neutral island could bring the neutral armada to bare on the Griefer fleet.

I think a way to mitigate problems like that would be to make neutral island some sort of server hub. Not necessarily only having one, but have one split between 4 servers or something. That would require it to be somewhat disconnected from the main map area, but this could be done pretty easily with basically a giant thieves haven style area. Then when people leave the neutral island the game can choose how to place them server wise. Maybe have it try to default to the last server unless there are too many people near the exit or something.

I never wanna have anything instanced. Everything is physical in this ocean from the loot to the maps and personal clocks and compass'. Instance is a step back.

This would also help with the server hopping complaints that others have mentioned.

  • @ve111a The whole game is an instance, arguably from how I've heard the matchmaking server merging works the whole game is almost instanced around the ships.

In anycase this would be like instancing light, if it were done right there wouldnt be any loading screens or anything, it would just transition you as you sail through the tunnel into the neutral islands interior cavern. I feel like it could be made into a seamless part of the world, which would have the added bonus of making the game world seem more populated. Since if neutral island were a sort of server hub there could be many players in it.

  • So I like it, however it would have to be separate from the game world for a few reasons.

    1. Trolls, players will camp outside ready to sink whoever left port.or just sink your ship for SnGs

    2. Rare has stated there will be NO safe space.

    3. Players could join a crew and just hang out, taking up crew spots.

    4. Number of players per server. Each server only has 6 ships (so I've been told), that would mean the max is 30 player, however more likely to be around 17-22. In short there may only be 1 or 2 players in their.

At being said I think it could be done as its own lobby style server that you join to find and for a crew / pick your ship before being loaded into a server.

You don't need your ship tomgo anywhere..
For much as people round the social island you can always catch a mermaid way out of there. And be out of sight.

  • I'll give the same feedback I always give for social hub posts. I'm really into the idea, so long as it's a pregame lobby. A place in the main game causes problems.

Problem One: Safe zones within the map will encourage people to run there to avoid PvP. If all you have to do is make it to the neutral zone, whether you can turn in or not, you can effectively avoid battle and wait it out until they leave. Any PvP game with safe zones, this is incredibly frequent behavior. People learn to abuse the mechanics, use them to hide and grief, etc.

The second issue I see is a safe zone within the map will take people off the seas. A pregame lobby eliminates this issue. If half the server is hanging out in the social hub, that's half the population out there not contributing to the dynamic encounters in the waters. It will perpetuate the myth that the game is dying, as people will see far less out on the sea.

A pre-game lobby allows for a lot of things to occur. It can help guarantee that the social hub is always active, as it will be the only place within this instance you can be (and matchmaking can keep it full). It allows for more in depth games like cards, without impacting the population of the seas. It also takes away any opportunities for griefing or other unsavory behavior that would occur on a normal server, contributing to the social aspects of it.

  • how about when you press set sail, it brings you to an island social that is disconnected from the game? then you go to the docks with your crew and talk to a dude to begin your adventure!
