The game is too dark, i can't see anything.

  • In recent days, my game has become even darker than before. So, during the day it's playable, but once at night it's impossible. I can not even spot things in front of me.

It does not come from my screen. It is 100% brightness, and I have NEVER had any lighting problems with other games, I still do not have any.

Since Rare does not seem to think that an in-game brightness adjustment is needed, I need an alternative method to play Sea Of Thieves.

I'm thinking of Nvidia tools, which could apply effects / filters to the game, to make it less dark. I did not find anything on the net, someone would know how to do it?

Yeah sure. Nevermind, there is no brightness bugs on my game.

  • I'm having the same problem on my laptop. It's the only game that has darkness issues, and the brightness is turned up to 11, seriously where everything else is blown out white.

I'll be playing next to my son on his Xbox and it looks fine on the TV, but I'm practically walking around with my eyes closed.

Let me know if you find a good fix.

  • For be sure that was not my screen, i asked to a friend to screeshot the game as the same place, at the same time. My game is really like 2x barker than the normal. Fix ? or Nvidia filter ? Someone ?

  • So two things I've seen so far with this. - First let me preface, that my 37 inch TV + 1060 GTX + Ultra graphics everything = no issues. clear as a whistle for me.

    1. My daughters computer is on medium graphics. It's much darker on her 24 inch monitor. Counts just like the OP says. She can't see something without a lantern, looks on my screen and can see it fine. So that's one thing I've noticed.

    2. My surface book 2 - 15inch (so also a 1060 gtx) with full graphics - same deal - very hard to see on it. The only difference is the CPU and harddrive in comparison to my desktop.

So not 100% sure what causes this, but I can attest to the OP that I've seen it REALLY dark on some computers. Using the lantern makes it fine, but I was struggling to walk around an island in a storm today with a lantern on my laptop.

  • I would actually love the game to be darker than it is at night ... Lanterns feel like an unnecessary mechanic, yet would pose unique risks if ever necessitated.

Imagine being in an quiet sea ... and seeing the distant flicker. Maybe a camp fire. A player on an island. A small sloop. Or a galleon... keeping only one lantern lit to lure in prey.

If unique experiences is one thing this game provides, then night time should really change the game completely ... As it stands, I can see everything without a lantern just fine.

Is your monitor set to any modes, my monitor was set to Vivid Colors mode and the game was way too dark. I changed my monitor to default and then made adjustments to the color saturation/brightness with the AMD radeon app (would be nvidia app for nvidia owners)

  • @captain-arcanic Try increasing the gamma?

  • I'd be happy if the day cycle was like twice as long as the night cycle cause I really hate the darkness.

  • Did you just recently update windows? I had an issue with my screen darkening after a couple updates. You should have options to apply image settings via your nvidia control panel. (gamma, brightness, etc).

  • I like the darkness of night. Makes it even more challenging. Makes it kinda spooky

  • @netryxa Lanterns, my boy

  • @oheck Nope. But... I suspect the last SOT update.

It's not that "cut and dry" simple, mate.

@netryxa Yeah I find it extremely difficult to see most things at night, in this game.
I have even swam over crates in shipwrecks saying that there is nothing else below when my mate will tell me what I've missed. He has even lit his lantern and pointed at them yet I only see the empty hull until the item is picked up and on our ship.
I have sent my mate video footage of our game sessions and he has confirmed a HUGE visual difference between our PCs.

It comes down to the game settings for lower end systems. :(
