The idea of custom servers and server browsers.

  • Now, before you spill your grog hear me out. I believe it would be a cool idea to feature a server browser and custom servers, including game mods such as new mechanics and items made by the players an community. They could also change game settings pertaining to progression and other things of the sorts. This would only work under very specific conditions:

    • No progress from the CUSTOM servers may transfer over to the base game.

    • There would of course have to be some age requirements or conditions to be accepted.

    • The servers SHOULD contain content that aligns with ESRB guidance, Microsoft guidance and to the extent of Rares guidelines.

Please let me hear your feedback on this and please Rare hear me out.

  • Not a fan of custom servers.

I think that having a server browser would help solve a lot of issues and requests from the community.

Armada, latency, low or dense population.
Not sure about it but definitly something to consider if not already done.

  • Anything that splits the user base is not a good thing in this or any game. So I can see your idea. But I'd rather not this becoming a feature.

  • The only type of private server I would support would be for sanctioned tournaments.

  • Custom servers is nice for one off games like Quake or Unreal tournament that have no actual progress. But custom servers will make this game feel empty.

You'd log into a private server, ajust some slider so there's no sharks there's more treasure etc and then you'd be pirate legend but you're bored because you've never been chased, never had a challange and has reached endgame without struggle.
It's like giving someone platinum ranking for beating easy AI in overwatch or LoL.

Other games are structured differently but this game needs all its elements it's like soup. You can leave out veggies because you hate them but it will just make it boiled water with meatballs. Not verry tasty.

  • I was talking about this with many people, and usually the answer is: "Yes, that is what the game needs"
Apparently the devs think it will cause players to "kill" servers as in a big group hogging the server all to themselves. but even that IS so, what is stopping you from just going to another server and continuing there? The main advantage would be for friends who wanna have fun together but are too many for a single ship or community hosted events like "The Thieves Gauntlet" (a galleon vs. galleon battle event). Right now the organizer(s) need to jump around servers to try recruiting other ships. while this works it is not very time efficient.
Obviously official servers would ahve to be kept seperate from custom servers (meaning no Reputation Progression on player hosted servers and special events) but any other main features could still be included.
The idea of player created content would (in my oppinion) also benefit the charm of the game. people could perhaps create RP servers or pure pvp servers with a stress on performance.

  • Custom servers no, it would take a lot of re-coding to make sure the progression won't be carried over.
Server browser 100% yes, it needs to happen, especially if they have these multi-crew events. Some people don't like talking/playing with strangers, they should be able to pick the same server as their friends.
And I know there is the argument of "they will be OP and rule the server" well there is nothing that stops that now. Strangers can team up now and team up and take out other crews.

  • Always like the" it will split the player base hur dur" when some of the biggest game communities games have something for everyone.

  • @nauseous-gnome9 i definatley think a pvp only server would be awesome but i just dont think it would work in this game

  • @nauseous-gnome9 Once the official servers go offline (in the hopefully far distant future) I would like the ability to run my own server.
