Horizontal ship progression.

  • So we've seen and heard of the devs saying there will be a variation of ships although we only have the two at present. We've also heard that the game will focus on horizontal progression instead of the usual tiered power progression.

Horizontal progression would indicate an interchangeable ship focused around an even distribution of the perks of the ship. This is also known as a power prism or power spectrum.

I imagine this to be something akin to a triangle of perks (speed, agility, fortitude) with each one taking stats from the other two and having a cosmetic adaptation to suit.

In the above consultation i would view that speed would make a ship faster and lighter. It may adapt to have extra sails to reflect this however it's turning circle would extend and would take on water at a quicker rate when damaged.

A more agile ship would have a duel rudder or aft sails (those that hang off the back sides) it would be slower than the basic version but could turn on a penny it would also take on water quicker than base.

Fortitude designs would be slow to move and slow to turn but could have extra hull cover aestheticly and even an extra cannon per side. As a result of the extra hull these ships would take on water slower than base.

These are my ideas, I'd love to hear more on yours. Please remember to keep a fair balance in mind and if possible, images are very helpful.

I'd be very interested in your opinions on this after seeing your work with the 5 ship meta thread.

  • Rekindling an old idea.

So actually adding horizontal progression. I've posted my suggestions below

So rather than creating a prism outright, I figure the best option is for actual ship customization with customization options affecting other choices similar to what you've listed. Rather than fortitude (which would be fine if it affected maybe repair speed or fill rate) I've sort of replaced it with "displacement"

Creating the ship: You create the ship using one deck or two decks. The benefit of a lower decks is a bonus to displacement. Displacement is how low the ship sinks in the water. The more weight you have onboard, the lower the ship sinks into the water, making it easier to sink. (I'm sure you've all noticed how galleons don't even need to repair the middle deck in most fights) Then you can start adding pieces of ship equipment. CB Barrels, food storage, repair stations, cannons, masts. The benefit of masts/sails is that they boost your speed, but they're also pretty heavy. Cannons can be placed anywhere (you can restrict it to the sides-ish) even inward a bit if you want to cut off a bit of your cannon range. You want CB barrels next to every single cannon? Go for it, bearing in mind that you'll incur that weight. Of course, this also opens the option of where you want to put the wheelhouse, the anchor
