Can chests be found by digging around randomly with your crew mates, or do you always need to have a quest to find them?

I once sailed alone in my sloop and met some friendly pirates we joined up and sailed together. They did a Voyage and I helped them finding the treasure. I found the spot and started digging but since it was not my crews voyage but theirs I could not find the treasure by digging in the right spot. They digged in the spot I told them and found the treasure. So I think you can't find treasure by just digging around.@chazzyau
You cannot dig up chests randomly, they have to be connected to your crews quests!
You can find random chests above ground on some islands & in shipwrecks, but never buried ones!!@logansdadtoo Can confirm that you absolutely can dig up random chests, we just did it and cannot believe it.

@sn4res What happens if you are on an island that has an active X from a different player? Will those chests be there for everyone?
@chazzyau 100% yes to digging random treasure. My crew went to an island on a mission and someone found one that wasn't on the 'X'. They weren't very good but hey, extra chest

The chests from another crew will be there, but you still cannot dig them up! We have tried this before, if an enemy digs in the correct place nothing is there. If the crew with the map makes the 1st dig, then the enemy can dig up the treasure!
To sum up, only the crew with the map can discover the treasure, but once the initial discovery is made, anyone can dig it up!@sea-of-trolls said in Finding Random Chests:

Not possible!!!
The crew with the map has to make the discovery, an opposing crew cannot 'find' someone elses treasure!!!
They can only dig it up if it has already been 'discovered'@logansdadtoo plus I never said I swooped on someone else's treasure, I said I dug up a random treasure and that is all I know. Don't care if it came about by another crew or not, it was a buried treasure that was NOT a part of our mission

No, but i've been testing the game for over a year & know what mechanics have been included!
Funnily enough, random buried chests aren't one of them!!
We have tested it thoroughly!! While helping a French crew yesterday, we tried to dig up their treasure but couldn't. They then dug in exactly the same place & the treasure was there.
It has been confirmed by the devs in the past that random buried chests do not exist, but you carry on & believe what you like. Have fun randomly digging everywhere & finding nothing ;)@logansdadtoo it happened. 100%. Alpha, beta, I couldn't care less what level of obsession you have with the game. We nabbed one. Wouldn't recommend digging for countless hours tho

No, you can't...a few days ago I helped a crew with their riddle chest...i tried to dig where it was, but nothing happened, he tried at the same spot and there it was...if they digged already once, then you can
