How to fix the PVE/PVP conflict

  • I’ve had this idea for a bit now, but maybe instead of having the outpost a safe zone, it’s just that PVP is “illegal”. It could be that you lose gold or reputation or get a bounty on your head for killing other players in the outpost. Maybe there could be some type of Outpost Reputation that you gain by finishing quests for any faction and lose by assaulting/killing players on an outpost. The less outpost rep you have, the less things you can buy or do.

So basically, players will be less inclined on killing because they know that there are consequences that could waste hours of playing/grinding.

Just a quick idea because I hate seeing the community being so ripped apart. I remember the good old alpha days where there wasn’t much conflict.

    TL;DR
Make players less inclined to kill in outposts by having consequences with gold and rep.

  • I've suggested this, Maybe have guards in outposts that are possible to kill etc. but not really easy.

  • @qm-ginger-beard Maybe you get more for chests with higher rep, Less gold for lower rep.
You gain rep by being sporty and collecting chests or doing missions, Lose rep via PvP but only if you kill a pirate on an outpost...

That's just not how the pirate life works mate...
You gain rep by killing and plundering, losing rep because you killed someone will make this game civilised and it will become just a shipwreck exploring and digging simulator game.

Pirates are all about the fighting, drinking, plundering and tactics. People that 'camp' outposts can easily be spotted and you should never go in an outpost without checking it out a little..

Just remember; where there are people, there's a ship. No ship? Then there will always be a mermaid to pick up players that are on there.

  • @sephilex I think that other than the fact that people want a safe zone because of killing, a lot of people want it for a Social Space where you can meet others and make new friends. Pirates didn’t kill each other on sight. I’m not saying it wasn’t common, but they didn’t do it. If they mercilessly attacked every pirate ship they see, they would increase their chance of being hung as a pirate.

  • @qm-ginger-beard I couldn’t tag you for the post I just wrote because I’m on mobile but it was directed to you too.

  • How about no.

  • how about one just one outpost on whole map that has a safe net yet either cant sell or return quests. so that people can go chill bullcrap with eachother. if they do let you return quests should only get like 15-25% of XP and coin for them.

  • @qm-ginger-beard Yeah

  • @sephilex I meant Rep with npcs for killing on their shores, They do have some respect for the rules of house.

  • @woollyamoeba584 That actually seems like a fair compromise. I am personally on the PvP side, but your idea does seem to be balanced rather than completely favoring total pirates or explorers. They could also make the taverns themselves safe zones rather than the whole outpost, but they should make it impossible for you to bring chests inside.

On another note, just about outposts in general, what if there are little games you can play with others inside of the tavern, such as poker, blackjack, or some other form of gambling that allows the transfer of money between players without conflict, while still keeping it fun.

However, to the detriment of the PvE advocates, Rare has stated that they WILL NOT include safe zones under any circumstances.

  • hum, The whole reputation idea may be a good idea to dig in, its worth a discussion at least.
    im with you OP

  • I think outposts should be safe, any town makes sense to be policed, make attacks on the shores illegal. They did that way back in Elite, no shooting any ship within spacestation zone, if you did the police ships came out and attacked you, your bounty went up too. So in this case the attacking pirate should pay a bounty fee or have the ports manned by npc cannons that will fire on the attacking ship.
If anything it will stop coming into the game with your ship full of holes or even a mermaid waiting for you.

  • @firetadpole7469 I hope they don't as long as there is risk then there is balance yet if the ship and death is just a spawn away many will do nothing but hunt other ships without risk. as of now its reward without risk.

  • @darealpastrami interesting ideas. However as of now (yes I know it is Beta) Rep and Gold equal cosmetic goodies. Really not much of a loss. What is the harm in making the tavern on the outpost a safe place. See, in this game the voyages last quite awhile in some cases. Wouldn't it be nice to have a place to AFK for 5 minutes for bio-break or have a smoke? One fix for sure would be a camping timer on outposts...that could make a huge difference, depending on the penalty the timer imposes.

  • The best way to fix this issue and its a quick fix instead of spending money on more servers instead of putting in safe zones and kill zones just simply add a flag method there is a flag ontop of the crows nest make it usefull... this pvp vs pve is blowing my mine ive been on both ends ive gone and killed people and ive been killed... its a part of the game how ever to fix this the flag above the crows nest make it white for unflagged as soon as u join the server u r unflagged cant be damaged by other players unless u flag and it gose black with a skull on it then u have a 2-3 hour timer before u can unflag that means if they just flagged means 2-3 hours of fun that way it stops them people who flag shoot then unflag to be protected or.... once ya flagged ya flagged cant take it down im down for either one that way its by choice is a hardcore pvper/pvpers want to kill and they join a server full of unflagged people boo-hoo leave rejoin.... same with the pver's if u choose to flag then...deal with the issue of being ganked camped killed.... maybe some pvpve people just want to get on do some chests safe then flag for pvp and go on a crazy killing spree idk but this will also stop endless follows that go on for 2 hours+ i have been followed by a 4 man ship on a 2 man ship for 4 hours i have followed people on a 4 man ship for a hour max it just comes down to not over doing things but pvpers cant help to want to kill and pvers just cant help to just want to exsplore im sure we all have been on both ends of the pvp scale 1 side is good the other not so much

  • punishing ppl for pvp should not be a fix for people that want to pvp

  • @explosiveboby its not punishing its called a choice

  • @explosiveboby You could still profit. Kill someone, lose 24 coins but sell a Chest for 100 and get rep back. It just makes actual treasure hunting a better option for profit.

  • This doesn't fix anything. You're just punishing people for playing the game the way the devs made it.

  • PVP is what makes this game! Replayability comes from the sole feeing of adrenaline for if your 1-2hr voyage will be trolled or not.

Play it smart, play it safe, play it aggressive; it’s all up to you.

I came into the beta thinking the game is basic and trash... I left preordering it.

TL:DR Make it your own adventure to Pirate Legend, arrrr

  • I love the game and the pvp but if we’re talking realism then people shouldn’t be able to shoot you (a solo player) while your in a populated outpost delivering your treasure simply because they had four people. In outposts there would be some sort of policing even in pirate times so this shouldn’t happen...the conflict should remain out at sea because even pirates wouldn’t fight at populated outposts and risk being put in a cell

  • The problem is the pirates risk nothing to gain everything. They can spawn a new ship every time they're down and not carry any loot themselves. That means you get nothing for fighting them other than to keep whatever you already have. That's the core problem in the pvp for those mostly pveing. They're a constant harassment with no payoff, the only person that has anything to risk is the guy digging up the chests, etc. That's the issue in the nutshell, not a git gud thing... There is no incentive to fight the pirates off they'll have nothing to take meanwhile you've spent an hour or so hunting up chests or whatever. THAT is why it is broken... If there was a reward for defeating them then it'd be worth it even if they didn't carry anything. I'm still pining for a bounty system of some sort so that killing the people who harass other players all day is rewarding. Right now, it's just better to run if you got loot in your hold. You have nothing to gain.

  • @ch4annel said in How to fix the PVE/PVP conflict:

    How about no.

  • In my opinion we should not artificially restrict where PVP can happen but new mechanics around it.

IMHO, a bounty system would be a good way to handle this. People feeling like hunting down an agressive ship for some reward could even band together and it would give the aggressive players the fights the are looking for.

I also think that it needs to become more meaningful to lose your ship. Being sunk, having your ship destroyed should be a big deal. People would think twice whether or not they attack and how often they keep on trying, if defeat actually hurts a bit.

  • We al want to become a pirate legend and it's fun to hang with people. What if the game just stay's how it is now and you just try to avoid other players. I also have a problem with people trying to kill me but I try to avoid players you can easily go to another outpost to cash your treasure. And al lot of the people think the same as we all think it's fun to play with others so they don't kill me. But I get it there are also other pirate just playing the game for killing you but that can be avoid by trying to do your own thing and avoid them. I play alone and it's a struggle but it keeps getting easyer and if it's real hard and people keep killing you ask a friend to play it or join a crew.
