PvP and real pirates

  • I'm going to start this off by saying that I like the way pvp is in this game and don't want it to change. I don't want pve servers, I don't want to have to flag myself for pvp, I don't want outposts to be safe zones.

That said, the argument that pvp should stay the way it is because real pirates would kill whoever they wanted to is c**p. It's inaccurate and honestly irrelevant.

I'll start with "irrelevant" because it's shorter. Regardless of how real pirates behaved, this is not a game about real pirates. This game is about a fantastical romanticized version of pirates. What real pirates did is not important, what's fun is.

A lot of people here state what pirates did based on what they imagined pirates to be, rather than what they were. Pirates did not kill people any time they wanted to, anywhere they wanted to. There are real world consequences that cannot be replicated in this game. If a pirate shot someone in a bar because they felt like it, it was very likely they wouldn't be getting out of the bar alive. If they bombarded a ship at port, the people living there aren't likely to want them around. Most people don't take kindly to murder and honestly most people don't feel good committing murder.

These things were incentives for pirates to leave people alone, even if they didn't like them. You can't replicate these incentives in a video game. No matter how harsh you make the penalties, they will never inspire the same fear that death does.

Honestly, many of the changes people have asked for have more historical backing than the current way things work. Safe zones represent the way people would actually behave due to social custom by putting artificial barriers on activity. Flagging yourself for pvp represents how pirates would literally fly a flag to warn that they weren't taking prisoners. Having seperate servers for pve and pvp represents... okay, that one doesn't have any real world basis.

However, as I said earlier, "what real pirates did isn't important, what's fun is," and I'm really happy with the way pvp works now. It's fun for me and I don't want it to change. What I do want to change is the argument people use to defend it.

  • I was unaware people were making such an arguest on the forums. All the ones I've seen dissuaded safe zones and that's about it. I'm curious what thread thought the argument "they did what they like" came from.

However, I would say there have been suggestions for "safer zones", mostly a large island patrolled by some sort of navy personell. You could still kill each other and sink ships, but then npc guards will come after you and chase you out of their waters. Thoughts?

  • They also didn't shoot themselves out of canons. People who worry to much about what pirates did in real life vs in a video game forget they are playing a game. It's meant to be fun and interactive.

  • I'm pretty sure that they fought animated skeletons though. They did... right? ;)

  • I’m really hoping for it to be close to the PVP in WoW but for xbox. If they get rid of or tone down PVP too much I will have lost all interest in this game.

Sure they did!!! There's even video proof of that!!! ...oh wait, hmmm... nope, there's also pirates being shot from cannons on that video, so now I'm a bit confused ;P

I've seen it in a lot of pvp threads. The most recent one I saw it in was "Is PVP avoidable?"

However, I would say there have been suggestions for "safer zones", mostly a large island patrolled by some sort of navy personell. You could still kill each other and sink ships, but then npc guards will come after you and chase you out of their waters. Thoughts?

I've seen that suggestion and I'm not a fan. Being able to kill "good guys" is too much like real violence to me. When I want to feel like a criminal, I play GTA. I like this game because being a pirate doesn't make you a criminal, it's just a normal profession. I like to compare it to adventurers in D&D.

  • Took us almost a hour to run into another ship on our 1st day. It's doesn't have a mainly PvP feel at all. Feels more PvE with splashes of PvP.

I take the #bemorepirate more as something of "fill in what pirate means to you". Everyone does that differently. Sea of Thieves is Sea of Thieves because while you are searching for treasure in this world you may encounter other players who might play different than how you play. To me, that is the magic of the game. Not knowing how itll turn out.

The bemorepirate comes into it by allowing you to choose how to play the game and what kind of influence you want to have on the people in your session. Because Sea of Thieves, at its core, is PVE and PVP intwined you meet a wide variety of players who fill in that bemorepirate differently. But the mechanics and setting of the game makes it so that you can change people's mind. I know i have.

Edit: I have also seen how one player can influence a server. I played on a server where i gave everyone treasure and so for hours i just saw ships sailing past eachother without shooting. Not that i did that entirely, but that sorta thing can happen. As in, if i act positive and find multiple ships and act friendly. They're less likely to shoot eachother because i waw friendly. If that makes sense.

I have also defended a sloop from a galleon at an outpost, sank them, told them not to sink parked ships, ran into them, ran into them again, (both times no shots fired) and received a gift from them. From shooting people, to exchanging chests. Weird stuff.

  • I don't know, I wouldn't mind a safe zone or too. Like, if I'm buying something at a shop I don't want to be killed while trying to make the exchange. 1 it isn't fun and 2. It's not realistic either
So these are 2 points made for the 2 different sides of the argument fun vs realistic pirate background. I however would like a pvp arena deal with more than 3 pirate crews (maybe 5 or so) composed of 4-8 people and ships with more cannons. The same thing could be said about land battles (5-10 people) but I wouldn't want this to be part of the pve/pvp system in place. In other words, I don't want it to hinder the treasure hunting/ pirating concept so I would like it as a mode type in the game separate from the main game's core system.

If Pietro's Pizza 3D pirate-theme mini golf course has taught me anything: Yes, real pirates fought animated skeletons.

  • I Love the game as it is. I Love that PvP is everywhere. I Love that you always have to be activ and on alert.
I may not be the best PvP player but if i stay in a safezone hidding how will i ever learn how to be a great PvP player and i think what they are giveing us is a blessing, were not safe and we have to learn how to survive and progress ?

I have nothing to complane so far. I just filled with joy and eager to soon get to lose me-self in the adventures!
