There’s a Subreddit post that I’ll leave bellow that talks about it
I think grenades or bombs would add a lot to the game
@venialprince51 great idea! it'd be important for the devs to make this grenade item rare at essentially all points of the game though. people loaded with gold in the end game would pretty much have them more often than not if they were purchasable, even with the 2-3 grenade cap, and inveresly new players would never be able to afford them early game. this as a rare reward in some chests and quests would be a fantastic way to further balance them out, as long as they really made the difference in battle when used.

@djm-xr07 ye know what? I will!
When I find out how -.-
I think the best way it could be handled would be those old classic black bombs. Maybe not so much a long animation, but you can't douse the fuse without water. And the fuse is loud, so you could light a bomb in the bottom of an enemy ship, they could at least have a chance to find it, and dump it into the ocean/dump a bucket of water on it before it goes off. They could even be loaded into cannons, NO explosion on impact. But that perfect shot of a bomb landing on deck and rolling below while the enemy scrambles to toss it overboard would be great!
@erinom3 well... grenades fulfill a different purpose than gun powder barrels dont they?
barrels can be used for traps, mines, and sabotage. while grenades are rather more active than passive, you dont need to shoot them to detonate, you can throw them a good distance, and they're not clunky. much more useful against players and skelles imo

Personally, the addition of explosive barrels is reason enough for me to not want grenades. Although i want to be able to throw barrels atleast 5 feet. That and molotovs. Some one say b***y traps???!

This is a pirate game where are the b***y traps
I wanna be able to lay trip wires and explosives or more
It would be nice to have really deep, detailed fire system, like for example: You pull a tankard of rum out of your inventory and you just throw it at the enemy and then you ignite them (by throwing an oil lantern at them or something, though if you did that, there wouldn't be much of a point for the rum thing).
Anyway, this kind of small, yet incredibly funny and perky features would be really amazing.
