While some players enjoy playing bilge, it is generally agreed to be the most boring and repetitive role on a crew. The update that added different hole sizes was nice, but the bilge still remains a less glamorous role.
I suggest we get some bilge and lower deck repair updates and attention.
My suggestion is that we add plugs and patches as new repair items alongside the existing planks.
Plugs would act similarly to hunting spears. They would plug a large hole and allow only a little bit of water to leak in. They would be faster to use than planks.
Patches would temporarily stop water from entering, but after some time they would burst back open. They would also be faster than planks.
I’m not a math guy, so I wont attempt to run the numbers, but if balanced correctly, planks would be best used on the side of the ship that isn’t receiving active cannon fire, and would be used outside of combat for permanent repairs.
Plugs would be best used on large holes.
Patches would be best used on smaller holes.
Additionally, I think it would be interesting to discuss making repairs on the middle deck of a galleon or upper decks of sloops and brigs worth repairing in combat.
These changes won’t make bilge the most fun role on the ship, but I hope they add a little depth and skill expression.
In any case, I don’t care how the bilge role gets attention, but I do hope it receives some love in some way at some point in time.
