Sea of Thieves, Movie?!

  • Well. This was a surprise on itself. Being produced by Destin Daniel Cretton (Spider-Man: New Day and Ten Rings director)

Can't really say Im happy or interested, as the Story ingame of SoT has been a mess for some time, so where can a movie even go with what it has?
Multiple movies over the course of the game? Will it follow the same ideals as Pirates of the Caribbean?

But it was just announced its in development so we wont hear much about for a few more years (4+ at best) if all things go smoothly and if Rare has any say in how to progress it.

  • so rather than fixing the game all the money players have given them to supposedly fund the further development of this game is just going to fund a movie? and how will they make a movie based of this toxicity filled pile of dren? it would have to be a movie based off the tall tales and avoid any of the one thing Rare has been obsessed with about this game. the shared world pvp griefing which was intented to just be friendly naval battles filled with laughs and good times had by all and instead was so bad they had to turn of voice coms in arena because of how toxic the xbox playerbase is?

  • @quitespace1450

You think Rare is the one making it? 😂

  • I will be very surprised if it happens.

To buy the option to make a movie would be relatively cheap - making the movie not so much.
It would be very derivative of Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Might work as a Pirates Of The Caribbean spin off.

Marvel producer, links to Disney. Can they get Johnny Depp back?

A million Alpaca's was it not?

  • I think this movie could be a big hit, honestly, and can see it going in a couple ways.

1.) and most likely; the film is an adaptation of the Athena's Fortune novel. I think this is most likely because the story itself sets up lore for both how Ramsey/the Pirate Lord discovered and chartered the Sea of Thieves, but also how Larinna made her way to it as well. The tales that interweave on a chapter-by-chapter basis work nicely, and would fit as a film nicely I think.

I even came up with some fan-castings of the characters, though you'll notice there are many Black Sails cast members (that show is so peak):

    Crew of the Magpie’s Wing

    • Ramsey: Mark Ryan or Toby Stephens. Both from Black Sails as Gates and Cpt. Flint - Toby also narrates the Athena’s Fortune Novel and would kill it again.

    • Rathbone: Ralph Fiennes

    • Shan - Mads Mikkelsen

    • Mercia - Penelope Cruz or Michelle Rodriguez

    Crew of the Unforgiven

    • Adelaide: Zoe Saldana

    • Faizel: Dan Fogler

    • Little Nedd: Tom Hopper

    • Larinna: Jenna Ortega or Isabela Merced

    Supporting characters/villains

    • Gideon Graymarrow: Zach McGowan

    • Eli Slate: Toby Stephens (I know lol, he’d be good in either main or supporting or Steven John Ward (Mihawk from Netflix One Piece)

    • Briggsy: Jessica Parker Kennedy

    • Sticher Jim: Anton Lesser

    • Kraken (voice): Jack Black (haha)'

Conversely, they could go the route of an entirely new story, in a brand new character's eyes, as they make their way to the Sea of Thieves and go on an adventure of their own. Admittedly I am more hopeful of the first option.

  • @pc-monkfish How crazy would it be though, if Jack Sparrow returning to the big screen (even as a cameo) was not through a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but Sea of Thieves? I'd go crazy, honestly.

And honestly? I could see it happening, since Disney allowed Rare to use the IP/Characters in their partnership.

My big cope is that we get some Tall Tales leading up to this movie.

  • I must mention that the Legend of Reaper Ron felt pretty cinematic. :)

  • OH and I keep forgetting; for a game that is "dying," it's odd to see them try to make a movie about it.

I think it would need to be a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
    Bigger IP.
Johnny Depp would be definitely need to be cast to be viable. Even if it was just passing the baton to a younger generation.

Using Sea Of Thieves would be a neat way of getting access to a ton of lore, production design and potential story lines.

  • Honestly it’s a smart move. Rare probably isn’t the one footing the bill here, this is a Microsoft decision to invest in their IPs outside of game. It’s a strong signal that they’re not going to all of a sudden wrap up Sea of Thieves. However, it’s also kind of a decision that makes me question why excess resources aren’t somehow handed to development. Is it that game dev doesn’t need it for game dev? Or does Rare / Microsoft just make money off the IP? Who foots the bill for production etc. Very curious.

  • Really hoping Jack Black will be cast as the pirate lord

    “I…am Ramsey”

  • @spectergames706

    And Jared Leto voices Flameheart…..

  • I hope, at the very least, that the movie won’t follow in the footsteps of the Sea of Thieves writers:

    • Introducing characters and storylines only to let them sit on the back burner for three years...

As for the idea of a movie, I’m not against it, but right now? NO! I’d much rather—BY FAR—that they focus more on the game’s health, that the writers STOP writing never-ending stories (with no clear continuity), and that they add REAL content!

That’s when you realize things are going badly, because instead of taking care of the game, they’re thinking, “Hey, why don’t we make a movie”… They’re really treating players like cash cows!

One thing is certain: as long as the game is run this way, don’t even bother hoping I’ll spend a penny—let alone go see a movie...

And to temper the enthusiasm of some: just because a movie is in development doesn't necessarily mean it will ever be released!

You honestly think game devs/programmers are downing tools to pick up a camera?

That's not how licensing/buying an option to make a film works.

  • @pc-monkfish a dit dans Sea of Thieves, Movie?! :

You might think I'm stupid, but don't worry—I know exactly how it works!
And that's exactly the point: Rare will have a say in their own creation!
Not to mention that I find it really strange to want to make a movie out of it, considering that the game's heyday is long gone...

  • Better have a pirate named Mark that somehow dodges every round fired at him
