Possibility of Pirate Games!

  • Pirate games get requested all the time, and a common ask is the ability to gamble gold. The problem, of course, is that simulated gambling would hurt Sea of Thieves’ age rating, which makes it essentially off‑limits. For a long time, that left a core part of the pirate fantasy stuck in limbo thanks to ESRB and PEGI restrictions.

But there is a way to add pirate games without adding gambling—and still allow meaningful player interaction.

Minecraft is PEGI 7 with zero gambling features. Yet players freely build casinos and gamble their diamonds away. That’s allowed because it isn’t a built‑in mechanic; it’s simply player‑driven interaction in a sandbox. Online interactions aren’t rated, and as long as the game itself doesn’t provide gambling systems, players can create their own risk‑and‑reward scenarios.
Sea of Thieves could follow the same model. Add pirate games with no built‑in betting systems, and let players use trust, loot items, or improvised stakes if they want. That keeps the game within rating guidelines while still enabling the fantasy.

Is “betting” possible? Technically, yes—but it’s a pirate game. Nothing stops someone from shooting their opponent and taking the winnings, which honestly fits the world perfectly.

And it’s worth noting that a form of “gambling” has existed since Season 5 with the dice emotes. Players have literally decided Hourglass matches with a roll of the dice, and that hasn’t affected the rating at all.

I made 2 little games I would like to see in Sea of Thieves, alongside the mandatory classics everyone has in their mind right now. (Checkers, Poker, liar's dice, ect.)

    Soulbound: The OoS TCG
the order of souls has made a trading card game. battle with ocean crawlers, phantoms, skeletons, even ghost ships! all with real soul fragments imbued within the cards for high action VFX! unlock cards through completing associated commendations and purchase them from the OOS Tent! trade them with other players! there are many other cards too based off of other iconic cursed enemies and items.

    Rum Roulette
it's a card game utilizing multiple opaque rum bottles drunken throughout the game by the losers of each round. know most just have banana water, but one has a brew so powerful it will knock you out and into a deep sleep!
(Basically, PG pirate liar's bar with alcohol instead of a gun.)

That's really all from me, I think I understand the right way for rare to add games but if anyone sees flaws in my logic, please let me know in the comments. From the way I am seeing it, the ball is in Rare's court on this much requested feature.

    also outfit presets when?

  • As fun as the workaround for gambling sounds, I don't think the devs will risk a move like that.

Valve is still in trial for the gambling issue, and doesn't seems like the best time to allow such a feature in SOT.

  • Yet players freely build casinos and gamble their diamonds away.

Built. Yes and it often only for Paid servers or custom servers. The Dev cant control that (yet) but its also...Diamonds, easy to find resources.
SoT we might as well gamble Bananas.

    Online interactions aren’t rated

Yup and that where a lot of parents get upset. Seeing there 5 year old in a T game doing "bad things" :/

Sea of Thieves could follow the same model.

    The gamble is this.
Loot on ship? You are gambling on the thought, you will make it to Port before losing it all to some high dealer.
Frankly we can already build our own gambling games...

    Emotes.

    • Coin Flip. Winner 2/3
    • Draw Card. High card wins.
    • Dice Roll. Same as above.

Winner gets loot on ship, but as mentioned. "Player trust" It also called Parlay.

  • "A young person commits an offence if he gambles.

participation in equal chance gaming in accordance with a prize gaming permit". UK law. This won't go down well.

  • @Metal-Ravage you are absolutely right, I see your point regarding Valve's trial.

however, it's important to note real money is involved there, whereas here it's just cartoony pirate chests.
in my opinion it's different enough for the devs to consider it.

    real money loot boxes=BAD
    gambling real money=BAD
gambling a cartoon pirate chest that took 15 minutes of playing a fun game to obtain= OK

  • @spectergames706 It's not about winning an ingame prize. It's about what it teaches people. Unfortuantely in this world, a kid could want to try this in real life with toys, then it goes to more toys, and then money....

  • @spectergames706 The addicting nature of gambling is what everyone is trying to avoid.

As for using in-game currency for gambling that is the reason Roblox was sued by the parents of the players.

Believe me I wish it was different!

  • @TintinTheBoy

I get your point, children and early teens are impressionable bunch. now we really get into the confusing question of what the extent of Microsoft's obligation to protect kids. at which point does protection of the youth conflict with the quality of the player experience? we already have drinking, so I wonder how many kids have reached for their parent's beverages after trying some grog?

all fair concerns but at some point, it isn't the developer's job to keep people from being "inspired" by the pirate game.

  • @spectergames706 I mean... Is this really nessasary, I mean hey I get it. Games would be fun, but SOT at it's core isn't really an "adult" game. By law, developers have to be careful.

  • absolutely, being careful here is key. sea of thieves is a game for all ages and keeping it that way is crucial. the marketing and legal teams would really have to thread the needle on this.

  • If 2 players want to roll a d20 to see who gets a chest, that mechanic is already in the game. Whether the loser honors that agreement is up to the player.

Just know that the UK has some of the strictest anti- in-game gambling laws. Anything that even smells like gambling won't happen. So it's nothing the developers will have to tread carefully about, since it's not happening.

  • @europa4033
Ideally if they added games they would not even mention gambling in the trailer, it not be a feature and only technically exists through player interaction like it already does with the dice emotes. Adding a “bet gold” feature is and always has been out of the question.

Personally, I just like the idea of a order of souls Trading card game.

  • @Spectergames706

Some mini games while sailing would be nice, but they gotta make sure there is nothing like gambling. Monkey see, monkey do...

  • @snugplayer18335
Absolutely, gambling as a feature is not an option. Just a bunch a fun games for fun social interaction.

  • @spectergames706
Personally I would love to see gambling added to Sot, as its a pirate game, and pirates gamble. But I 100% understand why they choose to not add it, those restrictions are really tight and they don't want to deal with it.
Outfit presets: never (rare hates adding useful features, looking at you pirate profiles)

  • @rocksinclair

Yeah, betting gold as a feature is not coming to the game period. However, games are still possible as a feature.

What I think rare can get away with is a bunch of fun games possibly fueling player interaction using loot items.

at no points are there chips or a “all in” button, therefore all gambling is back to the level of what we alread Have with dice- just player interaction with the same threat of betrayal, theft, and PvP.
