A rough patch.

  • I love this game. A lot. I sometimes struggle with an addiction to it. But it’s not perfect, and it’s far from fixed.

Many players report seeing bugs of all kind. Duping of spears (believe that has been fixed), hourglass not working (sad, but at least the sweats will do something else for a while), and getting kicked endlessly and not being able to rejoin (fixed too?).

The only reason I’m excited to get back on is to practice using weapons and maybe find some ships to sink.

This isn’t a complaint, I’m just pointing out some major problems. The Sea of Thieves is a place for me to really unwind and let loose my stress and anger that built up throughout the day.

The sea is going through a rough patch, I get it. We all do sometimes. I understand that the team is working to get it fixed. I also know that most of these bugs have been fixed, but there are still countless of them on the seas, like hit-reg.

  • A rough patch indeed, but not permanent. So many entitled voices scream and yell like children, having no idea the time and effort it takes to keep the game they’re playing running 24/7/365.

  • Definitely been a rough patch for a while now, but just gotta weather the storm. It's okay to take breaks as well - this is something that's been invaluable in preventing major burnout for me.

  • @tesiccl servers running 24/7 in an online game isnt applaudable. rare isnt a small company and they could do so much better than this. i regularly play the game but everytime they add something new it completely breaks the game (that is not normal at least to this extent) this damages the games reputation big time. u and me can wait for a fix but a new player that buys the game and see how broken it is is just gonna uninstall the game and never touch it again and at this current state that this game is in it desperately needs new players

  • Yeah, I think Rare are working hard. It's just an unfortunate side effect of all their efforts that we are going through some tough times while they right the ship.

Drew did warn us that this would be the case but I guess none of us expected it would be so rough. But, still, we have to remain optimistic, they have a dedicated team across the game health and that should mean a better result in the end.

Regarding hit-reg though, I think people need to stop focusing so much on that and understand that the reality is a lot more complex than just "fix it". We're dealing with a game that wasn't built to be an FPS and the low rate of fire only highlights the issue. They've made improvements over the years, such as server side confirmed hit-markers and such, but I don't believe it will ever be at a level that will satisfy competitive play.

The game is casual at its core, it's a family-friendly adventure social sandbox. PvP is a big part of it, no doubt, but I think players would be a lot happier if they took it less serious and just tried to fool around and have fun. And that still remains a valid attitude during these troubled seas.

If you’re a soulless husk that only expects the product to work and not care about the people behind it, how often they’re worked to the bone to get things out on time… yeah feel that way.

  • @tesiccl its a triple-A company you should expect them to provide u with working product. and these game breaking updates happen so often that its not so easy to ignore.

  • @raidyn128460 And yet it is a 'working product'. You ARE able to play the game. Some things may have issues or be disabled for quality reasons, but you are able to sign in and play the game.

Tbf the critiques from these ''entitled voices'' come from people that point out how much this game breaks. The luxury of playing any other game that doesn't have this reputation that this game has you could say.

Yes it's not ''permanent'' but when you still have bugs in the game for over a year not being patched, it downgrades the reputation.
When you have game breaking bugs every other month they are more than 'entitled' to point that out.

I play a LOT of other games yet, Sea of Thieves seems to be the one that is consistently having a problem or two each time I come pay a visit to play it.
I also thank myself for not being some Hourglass main player. Imagine booting up a game to see that the ''game mode'' is unplayable for weeks now? IF the game had several gamemodes, sure I could maybe understand that, but when it's a core feature in Adventure, it's starts to become embarrassing.

ALSO they did say right: That they purposely stagnated the season in multiple releases to try an avoid issues instead of dumping one massive seasonal patch that could risk breaking a lot.

Yet he we are, that still failed... Clearly did. No but's or ifs and certainly no ''Oh you are entitled cry baby, stop pointing out the pattern of mistakes, you are not supposed to do that!''

  • @raidyn128460 Rare can only do so much with the dinosaur servers that Microsoft allocates to them, friend. The Azure servers that SoT runs on are ancient. Nevermind the fact SoT is running on an outdated UE4 model.

Imagine that popular party game, where you try and fill a glass all the way to the top with water, without overflowing. That is the best comparison I can make to what's happening with SoT. With every new addition that gets proverbially poured in, room has to be made so the whole glass doesn't overflow. But it just ends up compounding the issue each time, so the solution would be to get a bigger glass to fill, so to speak.

Truly believe that better servers/newer engine, cutting old-gen Xbox support = renaissance for this game.

They literally have the power to do that, so why don't they? No one here has the answers, not even most RARE CM/Mods.

Also didn't they just recently do a server upgrade? What was that about?
Also I just don't know if cutting support for the old-gen xbox is a move they are allowed to do or they can get sued by consumers.

Their best bet would probably making a remake of the game, or simply making a SoT2 once they finish up with Everwild.

  • @veronik5682 Server allocation can be tricky, especially when a company utilizes another company's equipment/framework - in this case, Rare utilizing Microsoft's Azure servers. Can't say for certain, but I have to wonder if there's some reason/barrier for keeping these current, dated Azure servers, instead of upgrading.

They did some optimizations, yes - multithreading. This architecture change allows a server to have multiple threads of executions happening at once, lending to better stability. This was a step in the right direction, and there has been noticeable improvements, but it's a stepping stone to fixing a larger issue.

I don't know that they can be sued for something like that, but I could be wrong. I know there have been similar online services/games that no longer function, and nothing happened (Nintendo DS Street Pass, MiiVerse, etc) - I know those are a bit different situations that shut down due to dated hardware, but I digress.

Absolutely agree - I think a SoT sequel or next-gen port is absolutely necessary. From what Mike said recently, it sounds like they are still planning for many years to come for the game, and showing no signs of slowdown, so I feel like a sequel/port is very likely.

They could simply stop adding further new additions to current SoT at a given season, and sunset it/make it free to play, and then release the next-gen sequel/port, and continue development - I feel like this is the best route to take.
