Consider removing sink stat or having it be hidden?

  • The last few captained ships we have gone against the captain or the crew will leave the game. When asked it is because they want to keep their sink stat in ill fated at zero.

Is this intended gameplay? I know it doesn't affect me but players are just dipping out when they lose so they don't have to see their pixel sink counter go up.

    Thoughts?

A simple fix is to make the captained ship remain as a captained ship regardless of how the captain leaves the game. As it stands, if the captain disconnects then essentially the ship becomes a normal ship after a certain amount of time. Now everyone cannot get progression on their milestones. This is not cool when someone disconnects after a good sink or loot haul.

On the other end, players worried about keeping a stat at zero or as low as possible are just quitting (normally mind you) to do so.

This cannot be intended on both sides of it.

  • That's unfortunate

no padded stats for me, I'm at 21 sinks and I earned every one of them.

  • My ship is at 12 sinks, all of them because i burned it down right before leaving. I have always scuttled or burned my ship before leaving, so its off the map (and the burning ofcourse for the campfire effect). But with captaincy i do it with a little campfire for obvious reasons.

  • Now that I reread my post, I'm looking at it from both sides.

People are leaving the game to cheese their sink stats, not intended I'd imagine but just like server alliances what you gonna do?

However, the fact that a captained ship can not become captained again if the captain D/Cs for too long. Now all milestones are stopped from everyone.

Fixing both (cheesing sink stat and letting ship persist) could be making when the captain leaves the ship is still considered a captained ship for at least 10 minutes. This would allow people to at least fix their internet, rejoin, etc. and prevent players from cheesing sink stat.

  • @dank-jimb0 Honestly, i have no idea what the issue is, it doesnt affect gameplay to have an increased sink stat, if you leave because you dont want that number to go up, i think thats more of an ego issue, because i think only the person who owns the ship can see that stat.

  • @dank-jimb0
So your captain prefers to have his crew have a person less so he won't have a sink "blemish" his milestones ?

Not a Captain I would want to sail with.

Ah, it's your opponents who do that ... I don't think that if they would stay, the fight would be much better if they have that kind of attitude.

  • Why do people even care that much lol no one's gonna see it. And even if someone does, why does that matter?

  • Does it even show in the captains log unless you pin it? If it doesn’t, then I don’t see the point of anyone doing this. Needless to say, I find it a silly thing to do regardless. Some you win, some you loose. That’s just how it is

  • I have proudly pinned my sink stat for all to see.

It does make me wonder though - I sailed with some friends yesterday, and 2 separate encounters ended in retreat. We were in a heated firefight between ships, and out of the blue, the other ship would fire up a white flare and then sail away from the encounter. Their not wanting to sink might be why...

Also, it was pretty funny when, at the end of our successful venture, my crewmate absent-mindedly threw a firebomb at my ship's mast thinking we'd give it a viking funeral.
    "HEY!" I yelled at him.
"Oh yeah - you'll have to pay to repair this. Sorry!" He said as he quickly threw water onto the burning mast.

  • I can’t imagine this affecting so many people that it becomes a huge gameplay problem. I don’t think we should do anything about it. As far as I’m concerned, they are being punish enough if they scuttled their boat and forfeit their loot for a stats every time a boat come close to them.

The only way to become good in a game is through experience, which requires to be sunk and killed enough time that you don’t even care anymore. I do not associate someone with a zero time sunk with being a good player at all.

  • @crowedhunter I want pirates to see it - so they can see just how great I am! 😉

  • @crowedhunter said in Consider removing sink stat or having it be hidden?:

@lafrules Well you'll never get to see my logbook anyway if you never sink me. Neener neener.

If it is like most log books my crew finds, nobody updates it so it is all zero anyways lol

  • @dank-jimb0 Hmmm also means nothing to know how many times you sunk if you don't know how many other ships you have sunk. Don't think they added that did they?

So it's like trying to stat out a K/D without the K on milestones. It don't mean anything.

I’ll just follow you around until you log off and pick it up from the water 😜

  • Anyhow, easy fix: right off the bat, ask the captain how many sinks he has. If he says zero, log off 😉

  • sink stat, i don't care about

however, the gold cost of having to repair your ship, i could see how someone would rather leave the game and save gold than sink and have to pay 1k or more gold by staying to be sunk or scuttling

i did leave at one point myself, becuase the crew wanted to spawn camp me. And scuttling is a 1k+ fee for repairs after, so instead i just logged out. Not like i had anything on board (being a fisher and having just sold all my fish) so in that case i definitely preferred logging out and saving the gold than scuttling and eating a gold fee

  • It's unfortunate that people are cheesing the stat but honestly does it really accomplish much? You can tell by their gameplay when they've they cheesed it. No different to fighting a full DA boat and going yup you're definitely an alliance server noobie.

My poor Convict has been sunk twice now 🥲 (once because I can't park property)

  • It’s kind of hilarious that people are trying to cheese this stat. Man, I sink all the time, I keep my pirate in his skivvies so he’s not having to spend half his time drying out his jacket. The sharks are starting to high-five me instead of biting. I mean, if you’re not sinking you’re not really playing, right?

  • It has definitely affected my play choice. I have only been sunk once and that was to see how expensive scuttling would be.

I've chosen to logout instead of scuttle because of server conditions. Not because it was a thing or I could keep my log from being sold. Not like I can sell it anyways.

The scuttle was 1000-1500 ish btw, and as I understand it no log is generated from scuttling either. Could be wrong about the log.

It is currently hidden to everyone but your pride. Unless you pin it to the log. And mine is Shanties, Grogs Poured and Provisions cooked/eaten because sometimes a pretend life doesn't always have to be epic.
