What are your controller shortcuts?

  • For those X-box players who are new to the game, did you know that you have the option to remap the buttons of your controller?

The standard xbox controller has three four buttons which are not used by default: up d-pad, left d-pad, right d-pad, and R1. This means you can add whatever you want to those buttons without losing existing functionality.

If you assign something that has multiple options (such as food), then you'll cycle through whatever you currently have in your inventory with each press. This can be either a minor convenience, or come in clutch during a crisis.

As an example of what you can do, here's my current setup:

R1 = Food. This allows me quick access to my food if I need to heal while fighting. I can also easily choose which food I want - no more eating 2 bananas just to get to the mangos.

Right d-pad = Cannonballs. While you can choose which ammunition to use by bringing up the radial while using a cannon, this shortcut gives me the ability to choose my preferred cannonball while I'm running towards the cannon. It also gives me quick access to throwables.

Up d-pad = Spyglass. If I see something suspicious, I can quickly inspect it with a spyglass.

Left d-pad = Instrument. Here is where I get self-indulgent. Yes, it would be more optimal to assign planks or buckets here, but I dislike having to navigate to the second radial menu to select an instrument.

What about your set-up? What advantageous does it provide you?

    RB - switch weapons/secondary interact

    LB - jump

    Y - throwables

    A - food

    (All four help during combat)

    Right Dpad - bucket

    Left Dpad - equipment radial

    Up Dpad - pirate chat

    Down Dpad - emote wheel

(All three wheel menus on the dpad)

    Right stick - spyglass

I've considered changing this from time to time but have kept it spyglass since that's what I've used since launch.

  • @limbicfanatic I have a chatpat attached to my controller, so I have ALL SHORTCUTS...right Stick-Food, LB-throwables (I've put my radial to RB), D-Pad left-lantern, D-Pad right-spyglass, 0-bucket, 9-planks, 8-instrument, P-shovel, '-speaking trumpet...Just if you consider to get one...IT'S ONLY USABLE IN CROSSPLAY SERVERS...sorry for this format I wrote, posting doesn't work properly

  • @limbicfanatic forgot one thing...there are 4 bottons not used by default, since the voyage and inventory radial are on the same button...so RB is also not used

  • @schwammlgott unless you’re like me and swapped it back to voyages on RB because I liked it before the change.

  • I play on controller on PC... but here's what I have mapped...

Left D-Pad - Push to Talk
    Right D-Pad - Food
    R stick - spyglass.
I've remapped RB back to quest radial, up on D-pad is pirate chat, down is emotes.

There are a few tweaks I wanted to do but I really wanted PTT on the controller and I got snookered by the binding for that clashing when I put it elsewhere. I had to compromise with page turns and remap those to LB/RB when in use.

  • @ninja-naranja sagte in What are your controller shortcuts?:

@schwammlgott unless you’re like me and swapped it back to voyages on RB because I liked it before the change.

I understand...switched that first too, but then again back to the "new" setting, as I prefer 1 more button as a shortcut on the controller

  • PC on (Sea of Thieves 😝) Controller.

I have jump on left stick click, A for sprint, right D-pad is PTT/Mute Discord mic and left D-Pad cycles cannonballs/throwables.

It just means I can jump and aim simultaneously, though it generally does me no good most of the time 😄.

This is the only reason I have one paddle equipped on my Elite 2. Can't play without it now, even in other games.

  • I always play with RB as interact and Up on the D-pad as pirate chat.

As for the shortcuts: I have X for Food, Right on the D-pad for maps and Left on the D-pad for Throwables!

  • Left dpad food

    Right dpad lantern

RB is voyages, as it should be.

Tip, you can just tap your food button to cycle food types, don't have to eat them.

  • Right Joystick
    Food
    Keeps me from dying

    Left Dpad
    Bucket
    Keeps my ship from sinking

    Right Dpad
    Wooden Planks
    Keeps my ship from sinking

    Up Dpad
    Throwables
    Fast Access to grenades

  • @limbicfanatic I have:

    Left D pad - food.
Right D pad - throwables. Always handy in a fight to quickly grab a blunder bomb.
R1 - push to talk - I chat to my crew through Discord, so having PTT allows us to talk in private, but then instantly chat to other crews without me having to go through settings to switch from party to game chat.

  • Dunno how much of mine is different, but I think this is right

    LS - Dash
RS - Food (means I can click it while moving still)
    D-Left - Bucket
    D-Right - Planks
    D-Up - Throwables
    D-Down - Emotes
    LB - Wheel
    RB - Speech

  • The only two I have added is

    Left Dpad - Food
    Right Dpad - Throwables

Found these to be of great help during my arena trials. Makes cycling food types and throwables really quick and easy.

  • Elite Series 2 Controller

    bottom right paddle- jump
    top right paddle- switch weapons
    Bottom left paddle- sprint
    top left paddle- food

    d-pad up - throwables

I never have to take my thumbs off the sticks in most situations except to pull out blunderbombs. The paddles also make it really easy to do the sprint/change weapon thing for double gunning.

  • @limbicfanatic

Left D-Pad - Push to Talk

    Right D-Pad - Text Chat

    Up D-Pad - Throwables

Right Stick Click - Toggle HUD

I like taking screenshots. Toggle HUD is awesome.

  • I set my quest wheel back to RB.

Left d-pad is lantern (helpful for shadow skellies)

    Right d-pad brings up throwables

A button became my food cycle button

And I have click RS to jump - I don’t have to move my thumb for maneuverability.

This setup feels natural and covers all the basics for me!

  • I use the default man. I mean, I’m chilling on a couch with a 70 inch TV.

It’s a silly Pirate game so I don’t buy into that whole leaning over a PC Monitor and getting all sweaty.

I guess a D Pad for food would be a good think but meh…I just don’t take it that serious 🧐

  • @glannigan true! Having shortcuts just makes everything even MORE chill though. But if you've been playing a long time it's probably not worth trying to adapt now.

My setup for what it's worth is

    Dpad Up - Throwables
    Dpad Left - Wood
    Dpad Right - Bucket
    Right stick click - Food

I don't take it that seriously either (I also couch game on PC), but certain self-made QoL improvements just help things go smoother - even just doing PvE stuff. Being able to cycle food is probably the most useful of the bunch for me.

PTT is handy, as I like being social with players I meet and it saves having my mic on constantly or picking up my keyboard to talk.

Each to their own, but I recommend giving the food hotkey a shot at least.

  • I use an Elite Series 2.

    dpad left is throwables
    dpad right is spyglass
    dpad up is pirate chat
    dpad down is emotes
    right joy press is food

    the paddles
left middle finger is left joy press for sprint.
right middle finger is A for jump
right ring finger is right joy press for food.

I run a long stick on the right for aiming.

Ive also adjusted the sticks' curves for speed.

Right trigger does not have a soft/hard press, any touch is fire.

Left trigger I've shortened the soft/hard press to be half of normal.

The triggers are both on the shortest physical pull distance the controller lets me change them too.

  • dpad up- pirate chat

    dpad right- emote

    dpad down- throwable

    rb-switch weapons

    left dpad-cycle fruit

    right stick-text chat

  • Mine is

    Up-Food
    Left-lantern
    Right-Emotes
    Down-Throwables

Mine is mostly set up for PvE battle. I have the lantern set for Shadow Skeletons so I can use the lantern on them to expose them.

Obviously I hot keyed food because in battle because most of the time you don’t have time to bring up the menu to get food. The same thing for throwables
