What are your thoughs about this arguments?

  • So, the other day a friend of mine showed me the "Blazing Sails" trailer telling me there is finally a game to rivalize with Sea of Thieves, now that the game is slowly dying.

I couldn't stop laughing because from my perspective SoT is fine at it's actual stage. It's true that it has some bugs but it's ok for me if there is a month or two when there is not a big update like this month.

To defend his point he gave me some arguments of why he thinks the game is heading to failure and I want you to tell me what are your thoughs.

    • There are no views in streaming.
I answered to this one that there are few streamers that play this game regularly. The most viewed games are related to it's streamers so it depends on the creator more than in the game

    • The game has so many bugs is literally unplayable.
Welp...it has bugs but there are just a couple that might be gamebreaking

    • There are no players in the servers. After server hoping he never finds any other player to do PvP.
He looks for emissaries so it's logic that he might not find a single emissarie at some times. If a server has no emissaries it doesn't mean that there are no players...

Feel free to give your thoughs. Happy sailing!

  • @Capt-Pilotes I thought it wasen't released yet?!

Im gonna test it, allthough i fully (with all my heart) hate battle royale games....
And about the gameplay, you can clearly see the were they've got the inspiration....from

Im forever SoT loyal but i will test that game anyway.

  • @capt-pilotes so the game is slowly dieing...yeah right 🤣🤣
That game looks like a really cheap clone of SoT...I don't like BR games, and I won't test it...
SoT has some bugs, yeah, but I can live with that, as long as they aren't really gamebreaking (I have no problems with hit-reg)

  • I'm not too worried about Sea of Thieves. It seems to have a pretty healthy playerbase compared to a lot of games. It's not really going to compete with the big games on Twitch, although it's had a couple of moments in the sun, but that doesn't mean it's dying. As I look now, it currently has about 3 times the amount of viewers on Twitch than Ark without very few of the "top" SoT streamers online, and I wouldn't say Ark is dying anytime soon either.

I don't really get the Blazing Sails comparisons. Yes, at times it looks very similar in some shots but overall it doesn't seem to have the same amount of detail or polish. I've not looked too deeply into it, but it looks like it's made in Unity? It certainly has that flatter look to it compared to Unreal. The environments seem very similar in terms of textures (or lack of), particles, and lighting to games like Human Fall Flat and Yonder. A lot of comments on the trailer on YouTube were talking about MS coming after them for infringement, I really don't see it being close enough for that to hold weight.

Gameplay-wise, I think it's going to be a lot different to SoT and it's focusing on a mode that Mike Chapman said Rare weren't interested in doing for their game.

There's some cool mechanics in the trailer for Blazing Sails that I wish SoT had - mainly the shovel melee - but, otherwise, I think SoT has far more depth and skill to it.

Speaking of Ark earlier, I see Atlas is at 30 viewers on Twitch, and it was touted as an SoT-Killer before it launched, just like Blazing Sails.

It's out on the 9th of September in Early Access on Steam

  • Blazing Sails looks like some battle royale which means to me not open world and has a set goal/end?

    Which isnt appealing to me.

Also its graphics dont seem well refined.

  • @capt-pilotes Yeah the game is dying since 2018 already.

Better to leave before the ship has sunk already.

Blazing Sails has all we want, more weapons, progression and better PvP.

    Bye

Oh what a time in gaming, when the health of a game is measured not by how many people play it, but by how many people watch it being played. This comment makes me feel so damn old...

@capt-pilotes said in What are your thoughs about this arguments?:

    • The game has so many bugs it is literally unplayable.

I disagree. The bugs aren't that bad; yes they can ruin a session of play, but not the whole game. (Anyone who has played a Bethesda title knows what a real game-breaking bug looks like).

@capt-pilotes said in What are your thoughs about this arguments?:

    • There are no players in the servers. After server hopping he never finds anyone to do PvP.

Here, your friend makes a better argument - but if constant, easy to find PvP is what he wants, SoT might not be the game for him. Sounds like the battle royale of Blazing Sails might be designed to appeal to players like your friend. Me, I like the greater diversity of play that SoT offers. Each to their own, right?

  • Let’s play with numbers! Joe said 25-30% of the Playerbase are Steam users! Steam peak was 15000 recently, add this with three and you have 45000-50000 Daily! Users not monthly DAILY! I don’t think that 50k daily users is an dying game and with some big updates like the 2nd anniversary or FotD or something the numbers are much much higher!

A rival... in a different genre. Not saying no SoT players will play blazing sails or anything, pirate game after all. Yet to compare a battle royal to an open world is like comparing oranges and apples, both fruit yet totally different. People might eat both, I play more than one game...

To defend his point he gave me some arguments of why he thinks the game is heading to failure and I want you to tell me what are your thoughs.

    Viewers on streams...

So, when is a game 'healthy' based on streams? I always find this a bit of an odd metric to use, sure it is maybe something to consider...if you have a couple of thousand people watching others play a game, how could it be considered unhealthy?

Like not every game can be the top dog or anything, a healthy playerbase is not only those that can rival with Fortnite, Minecraft, World of Warcraft etc.

    • The game has so many bugs is literally unplayable.
Welp...it has bugs but there are just a couple that might be gamebreaking

Unplayable... the game is pretty polished, though hit registration seems to becoming worse and is becoming more and more of a concern. Is it killing the game... doubt it.

Hop, hop, hop... if you don't actually sail you won't know the population of the seas. Yesterday I fought a grand total of 4 ships and saw the last one out in the distance. Yet there was a grand total of 1 emissary on the table when I entered the game.

Though at times the seas can feel empty, it doesn't mean there are no ships around. Each session is different and not all active servers are visible from the outpost.

  • @realstyli yea mate, saw it so i did put it in my wishlist :D on the 9th Sept im gonna buy it

  • Goh, the game was already dying after the first week , if... you believed some scarecrow acting persons...Back in those days, Ubisoft's Skull and Bones would wipe out Sea of Thieves like a bad memory ... i'm still waiting on Ubisoft's Pearle that would make every other Pirate game obsolete ... Then it was Ark's nephew Atlas who would throw Sea of Thieves over the edge of the world...If i'm correctly , that game hasn't yet big achievements in the Pirate lore books...

Sea of Thieves isn't streamed a lot? Hmmm, may i have a different opinion? Twitch tells more than i will...and ...Streams , why watch streams when you can make yer own adventure ? Learning tips and tricks ? Okay , but don't become a copycat...Play your own game , the game doesn't restrict you from doing that ...

Blazing Sails , Atlas Skull and Bones , King of Seas and so on... Just embrace them all, try them , enjoy or try to enjoy them... Don't pick a flag that you defend till yer last breath , try them all and ...Decide for yourself , without influence from anyone , wich one you like the most or play the most...

After Rare released it's SOT it was bound to happen that others would jump on that train , i've tried and will try them and if they are good i won't be ashamed to play them ...Why not ? it's a free world , but i don't think that i will ever abandon SOT for a different game and play sololy that one , because i still have fun and experience new adventures every time i play this game and you know why ? Because SOT is simply a tool but it's the players , the AI and my own clumsiness that bring me a lot of variations in adventures that simply can't be repeated because i don't control the AI nor the behaviour of other Pirates and it's just that that spices every adventure...

So in short , play them all , you're a Pirate but don't go fanboyism , you will only become a minehorse...Give every developer a chance and you , yourself , will see and judge who was the copycat of which game...

Take care , Sir and above all ...Have fun with whatever game you may embrace...

  • Blazing sails:

It's good there will be a pirate ship battle game out at last.
The Arena certainly failed, and Is just a mode that gets cheesed to death. Terrible hit reg and combat encounters. Must I go on..

  • @capt-pilotes IMHO Blazing Sails graphics look like a game that's coming out on the N64. I can't take a game like that seriously. I love SOT, and albeit there's plenty of bugs, I'll take the bugs over this game. One of my buddies jokes Blazing Sails looks like a group of college kids got together with a bunch of beer and designed it in a week.

  • @clumsy-george Damn, do you know more Pirate GAME titles than that....then feel free to name them!
I have tested Atlas and it was so ugly i never touched it again.
Skull & Bones - Seems awesome but it's not like SoT
Blazing Sails - Can be a funny thing to play when you're abit bored of SoT and want something similar. (allthough it's just BR if i understood everything right?)
King Of Seas, i had never heard of it 'til you mentioned it. - Do you have any more so i can wishlist/buy those as well? :D

  • @reapinglegion
i will try , Sir but remember that there are much younger and better persons to give you advice , some of the games i will mention are old , i mean have graphics that makes a younger person turn away...

But as you grow older , you cherish the games that gave you much fun without judging the graphics...i will try to place the word " older game " behind the title , not to stigmatize the game as "old and bad looking" but more to warn you to search info before buying...

An older game by the looks of it but one that brought me great adventures when i was young: Sea Dogs , Sea Dogs To each of his own, Sea Dogs Carribean Tales, city of abandoned ships ...in short type Sea Dogs in Steam and you will see a whole list...

Tropico 2 , another " older "game that is more a Pirate Island Sim , where you send out ships on the map but never have shipfights of your own, this is more a tactical game so beware before acquiring...

Naval Action , a nowadays MMO, with many ships to choose or acquire. Watch Steam to get more info

Abandon Ship , an indie game that is fun to play but doesn't has the graphics like SOT.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag...buuuut ...i think you will know or played this one , if you haven't , then go for it , it's good and you didn't had to play a previous AC game to enjoy it.

Blood and Gold : Carribean , may be something for you , but check out first before buying or acquiring

Of Ships and Scroundrels : uhm , somewhat like Sid Meyer's Pirates , i have it but haven't played it yet ,since i have little time at hand ...

Port Royale 4: Not a True Pirate game but a game set in that period of time where you can be a trader or a buccaneer...Search more info before jumping in , Sir

Tempest , a Pirate game where you steer ships a bit like AC Black Flag but the graphics aren't as strong as previously mentioned game .But it's not bad in gameplay

So , and this is just the tip of an iceberg , there are many Pirate Games but you have to use your internet in order to see if a game is suited for you before buying these games blindly , that also goes for the few titles i wrote down...i would regret if you would buy one of these and become angry on me as many don't have that "special" Ingredient that SOT has and they lack....

Oh , just one more but beware this is more a RPG , the first part has totally nothing to do with Piracy and the second part , the one i recommend has a few Pirate ingredients in it , but isn't a total pirate game...That does not mean this isn't a Great Game but it's just not purely a Pirate one ... You can't say i didn't warn you ;) ...Pillars of Eternity 2 : DeadFire...

Hope i helped you a bit , Sir , maybe ,when you search for these titles you may stumble on other Pearls i didn't mention. i wish you good luck in yer search , Sir.

  • @clumsy-george @ReapingLegion Here are a couple more for the list, also older titles (some just plain old, LOL!)

Pirates of the Caribbean - Not the Disney ones, but the one made by Bethesda during the OG Xbox era. Pirate RPG using the Morrowind engine.

Sid Meier's Pirates! - Another OG Xbox era game, also BC with the One and 360. More tactical than action oriented, complete with QTE ballroom dancing.

Port Royale 3 - the previous version of a game already mentioned, is BC on the One. More like sim/strategy type game.

Monkey Island series - point and click adventure game series, art style very similar to this game.

Age of Booty - an Xbox 360 arcade title that is more a Pirate themed real time strategy game. Also backward compatible with the One.

  • @reapinglegion

Besides the ones @dlCHIEF58 and @Clumsy-George mentioned

    Out of Reach: Treasure Royale

    Captain Bones

    Block of Rum

    Pirate outlaws (cardgame)

    Naval Action

    Pirates of Black Cove

    Manowar: Corsair (Warhammer)

    Tempest

    Blackwake

    Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail

    Windward

    The Pirate: Carribean Hunt

    And some more i'd guess

  • Thx alot @bugaboo-bill and @dlCHIEF58 !

And thank you @clumsy-george Im old....or would be considerd as such mate and i love old games as i was grewing up during the 90's so fear not, your recommendations ARE welcome!

  • @reapinglegion born '76 :)

i played Naval Action for some time, was fun with a clan doing PvP and stuff, not sure how active the players are.

  • @bugaboo-bill The reviews i have read on that game have kinda gotten me not to buy it.
Since the DEV's/SUPPORT's seems impossible to talk to.

  • @reapinglegion

thy tend to not finish their work, but leave it almost playable

i like their games - The Ultimate Admiral is kinda the tactics game of Naval Action.
looks like same engine zoomed out - its not easy!

edit: i often like games others dont like, so the reviews are mostly not for proper for me :D
