Does taking down your mast hide it from horizon?

  • Sometimes your sails are furled up yet there's times you see them fully down from a distance due to a small bug which fixed itself as you get close.

My question is this... If I was to take down my mast would this bug still show a fully masted ship on the horizon or does taking down your mast really help in keeping it hidden?

We do this sometimes and as far as I am aware it works as expected, so yes.

the ship you see at distance is not the actual ship. its a pre-rendered graphic that doesnt show the actual state of the ship, thats why they appear to have their sails down, even though in reality the sails are up. its only when you get into render range that you see the true state of the ship.

so no, putting your mast down does not hide it on the horizon. it only hides it for those that are within render range.

But you're likely tucked behind an island or rocks if you do this, not outlined on the horizon, will check some time given the opportunity..

  • All ships have a generic shape that is shown when you are beyond a certain distance no matter what state your ship is in; sails up or mast down doesn't matter. The only way lowering your masts would hide your ship is if you are within ship render range (ie. they can see if you have sails up or down) and you have to hide behind a short rock.

The problem is that most rocks that randomly pop up out of the water are tall enough to hide a fully masted ship anyways. I've never really seen a point to taking down your own masts to try to hide. It takes longer to hide and it takes longer to get moving again if you need to make a fast strike.

  • Depends on the distance. If your ship is very far away the mast will appear normally, even if it's down. But once you enter into 'render range' - the point where you can see another ship's cosmetics - the mast will appear in its actual state.

Edit: Not sure if this is the correct forum section though. @Musicmee maybe wants to show us his magic wand!?

  • @wagstr also ships at what my crew calls "max render" are slightly darker than the rocks at the same range. so even hiding your boat behind an island, if you can see a tiny bit, it is a different color black.

  • @greengrimz Good shout... just moving it to a more relevant category :)

  • So i has question. Does that mean if you have an old xbox your render range is effected? In theory you could see ships more clearly due to the pre render sticking out like a sore thumb. Kind of like pubg, they render character models from much farther range than environment. When youre on older hardware you can see people trying to hide in a bush that wont render.

  • @naynayso19 Render ranges for all platforms are exactly the same.
