Frozen Region in Sea of Thieves

  • Introducing a frozen region to Sea of Thieves would enhance the gameplay experience by adding challenging environmental elements and new mechanics that focus on survival and resource management.

    Key Features:

    Moving Icebergs:

Icebergs that drift throughout the region, posing significant threats to ships. Crashing into an iceberg can create multiple holes in the hull, dealing damage comparable to that of Ashen Lords. This would require players to be cautious while navigating through icy waters.

    Snowy Conditions:

Players could find themselves slipping in certain areas while fighting skeletons or other players, adding an extra layer of challenge.

A constant snowfall that affects ship handling, doubling the time required to turn the wheel or raise the anchor.
Ships and their components can freeze, making it difficult to aim cannons until the ship is warmed, requiring players to prioritize heating the ship to regain full functionality.

    Ship Stove:

Introduction of a stove pipe on ships that allows players to warm the interior by adding wood. This mechanic would be necessary to melt ice accumulating on the wheel, sails, cannons and anchor.
The wood requirements are as follows:

    • Sloop: 5 pieces for one snowing period.

    • Brigantine: 10 pieces for one snowing period.

    • Galleon: 15 pieces for one snowing period.

    Survival Mechanics:

Players would need to gather resources to keep warm, either by lighting campfires in cave islands or by wearing special frozen outfits unlocked through commendations. These outfits would prevent freezing effects during snowing, allowing players to explore comfortably.

If players do not warm themselves from campfires or by wearing the special outfits, their movement will be slowed, similar to how players move in a galleon’s lower deck when it is full of water. This would make running impossible and create an additional urgency to find warmth.

    Tall Tales:

Add 2-7 Tall Tales inspired by Frozen by Walt Disney, featuring characters like Olaf and others. These tales would allow players to embark on whimsical adventures that incorporate the magic of the frozen region and its inhabitants.

    Island and Sea Post Suggestions:

    Islands:

    Frosthaven Isle (Outpost)

A bustling settlement where traders and adventurers gather, featuring warm fires and local shops.

    Glacier's Edge

A towering island with icy cliffs and treacherous terrain, home to hidden caves and ancient secrets.

    Snowdrift Cove

A sheltered bay surrounded by snow-covered hills, ideal for gathering resources and hiding from storms.

    Blizzard's Roost

An isolated peak often shrouded in snowstorms, rumored to be a nesting ground for mystical creatures.

    Icy Fjord

A narrow inlet surrounded by towering icebergs, where explorers can find hidden treasures in the depths.

    Crystal Bay

A stunning island filled with glittering ice formations and frozen waterfalls, perfect for adventurers seeking beauty and danger.

    Chillwind Hollow

A valley where frigid winds howl, hiding secrets beneath its snowy surface and attracting daring treasure hunters.

    Sea Posts:

    Frosty Watch

A lookout point for ships navigating the icy waters, providing supplies and tips for safe passage.

    Glacial Pier

A floating dock for adventurers, where traders sell unique frozen resources and icy gear.

    Winter's Bounty

A supply hub for explorers, offering special items and quests related to the frozen region's mysteries.

Challenging Navigation: As ships navigate the icy waters, they must contend with moving icebergs that could lead to unexpected collisions, causing rapid damage and forcing players to adjust their tactics on the fly.

Resource Management: Teams would need to coordinate gathering wood to keep their ships warm and operational, leading to strategic discussions about whether to prioritize repairing the ship or keeping warm.

Exploration and Survival: Players could explore the islands to find hidden resources while avoiding freezing conditions. They might encounter treasure that requires specific survival tactics, like lighting campfires or using outfits to explore deeper into snowy caves.

Dynamic Weather Effects: The snow could impact visibility and maneuverability during battles, making it challenging to spot enemy ships or incoming icebergs. This could lead to ambush scenarios, where players use the snowy conditions to their advantage.

Team Collaboration: Players would need to work together to maintain their ship and keep warm, fostering teamwork and communication as they navigate the frozen landscape.

    Scenarios in the Hourglass:
Imagine respawning in the frozen region during a battle in the Hourglass. Players would face several unique scenarios:

Overall, this frozen region would bring a fresh, immersive experience to Sea of Thieves, adding depth and excitement to exploration and combat while allowing players to enjoy the charm of Frozen through engaging Tall Tales.

  • I will never understand why everyone wants a frozen region but most of the ideas here are good except about the tale....

I will never understand why everyone wants a frozen region but most of the ideas here are good except about the tale....

Same reason people constantly want night time versions of maps in shooters. It seems like a good idea, but then no one plays them because they can't see anything and it's just not fun.

I imagine the same thing would happen with a frozen area. It sounds cool to be slipping everywhere or running into icebergs or freezing to death or whatever theme appropriate effect you can think of until it actually happens and you realize it becomes annoying after the new-ness wears off.

  • Sea of thieves needs changes to keep their players engaged, and to gather new players, for a while now we had tall tale exclusive pieces of the map, with the shores of gold and the mermaid castle or whatever is the name of that one, no one remembers these because they are not easily accessible to most players doing regular gameplay, if the conditions were too harsh no one would play on those areas, just like with the devils roar region, the concept is great, but everybody hates the sudden volcano eruptions and finds the tremors or boiling water annoying to deal with, a new region could be great, if balanced right.

We could have icebergs, but not all of them could move since servers would perish, but some of them moving would be cool, having frozen skeletons and taking damage on the water due to freezing temperatures would be great, but it needs to be an small or reasonable inconvenience, not something too annoying, as an example, during harsh climate (aka storm) this area could do the same damage to players on the ship, and damage parts of the ship due to freezing if the ship lanterns are not lit up, melting the ice/snow faster by being with a lantern nearby, and preventing the freezing on islands when holding one, no need for too much extra, we can use what we have today to make an easy to understand temperature system and it would be amazing.

IMO a frozen region would be perfect, since icebergs are way more associated to the seas then volcanoes, and i would not mind if this ice region replaced the devils roar, and ive wanted it for a while now, also if paired with new ship types, no i don't mean 8 player man o war or whatever, i mean different types, like having things you can add to your ship to make it better at certain things, with downsides, like having a fish net that can grab fish while you sail but makes you slower, or an ice breaker that makes you sink faster because its heavy or having less cannons to have more speed in a galleon or many other different stuff, i think that would be a great addition to capitaincy as well.

  • Introducing a frozen region to Sea of Thieves would enhance the gameplay experience

Or it end up like Devils Roar. Nobody who is anyone likes it, it be OP in certain locations and demand change after awhile. Then it become an empty void.

Besides. The lore hasn’t allowed this and the age of pirate era

  • Someone just watched Falcore for the first time. It’s a meme suggestion now with no seriousness or care it’ll ever happen, and if it does, it’ll die in the same way the Devil’s Roar did. Plus, Caribbean = hot climate, ice = cold climate.

  • @burnbacon i am nobody who is anyone and yes i like the roar

  • @tesiccl But is sea of thieves supposed to be all "caribbean" ? because half of the map aside from the top left corner, is a dark and desaturated tone, which doesn't really fit caribbean theme either, specially the volcanoes

  • Despite what some people say here, I agree with the OP's post. A frozen area would be a perfect addition to the game as it would open up a ton of new possibilities and opportunities. It is not just a "meme suggestion" as the pvp community like to make it out to be. In addition, it's not like Rare hasn't proven that they can add or change areas before. Both Port Merick and the Devil's Roar are proof of this. Heck, even the shores of gold and the mermaid fortress can be used as examples.

  • @magma-okori volcanoes are found in every environment on earth, but there’s only two places you’re gonna find glaciers and neither are in hot climates. From a clever story telling perspective, and since there’s technical limitations now on map expansion (as well documented) the only viable place to have such a region would be in the Sea of the Damned.

  • @felix-ashur

It is not just a "meme suggestion" as the pvp community like to make it out to be.

There is no PvP community, we are all PvPvE players.

In addition, it's not like Rare hasn't proven that they can add or change areas before. Both Port Merick and the Devil's Roar are proof of this. Heck, even the shores of gold and the mermaid fortress can be used as examples.

All of the examples you gave were environments being added to, not changed, and none affected the overall climate of the area they were in.

My most recent reply above explains where is best suited for a “cold zone”, but it’s not within our Sea of Thieves.

  • @felix-ashur it very much is just a meme for example rare had there own dig a while back with the snowdrift fox "Fine beasts that hail from the icy wastes. Oh, you haven't visited the ice region?" this would be cool to see however I seriously doubt it will be introduced as it would servers are already under strain and they seem to want to keep it on older gen consoles.

  • The post is a wonderful idea outside of a few problems

Server stability is already an issue
Xbox one support needs to be cut
There's a lot of changes needed to make this happen

Hopefully this will be a nice anniversary update for the game

  • @burnbacon

Right because no one does gold vaults in the roar which allows for easy fast stackable vaults

And no one does the Ashen Athena voyages which are currently one of the fastest ways to raise Athena levels

@BurnBacon you some how don't know much about what sort of things the player base does do you im always finding people in the roar doing those specific things

  • The idea of a Frozen Region in SoT has been going around for years now. However, this post is one of the better breakdowns of the the idea.

The main problem is that SoT is not a survival crafting game. Never has been and likely never to be. Therefore, what is the incentive to go out into that region to 'suffer' the elements? Survival in harsh conditions comes about by necessity. If players have the option to suffer in this region or stay in kinder conditions, then nobody is really going to go there?

That's a lot of development time - new islands, new mechanics, new loot, new weather dynamics, larger map. All for what? Just for people to try it out for a little while before going back to what they are used to? Unfortunately the game is 6 years into its life cycle and the game is crippled by it's own weight. I doubt there's any plan whatsoever to introduce something like this.

    Cool idea though!

  • @goutfoot-stiner Xbox One support has no bearing on the server stability or performance whatsoever. So cutting it won't mean that there's now plenty of head room to add stuff.

  • @loch1907 Rare already stated once that content they wanted to add couldn't because of the limitations of the Xbox one to perform with that content

  • @goutfoot-stiner then they would probably add cloud gaming to it and everyone that plays on an xbox one would do it and oh boy would that be laggy, you think it's bad now? It WILL be TERRIBLE if everyone on xbox one starts cloud gaming

  • @sharkfire75 that's simple they just need to do another anniversary release on an S/X only client with the new content that Xbox one can't handle.....lots of games do this already plus there's been plenty of time for people to get new systems

  • @tesiccl Wowowow I know its kinda off topic but there is definitely a PvP exclusive community, don't discount us because we are not the majority :(

  • Pleace no.

I like how consisten map is pleace dont change it into another patchwork of biomes.

  • The new frozen region of Sea of Thieves, players will face harsh environmental challenges like snow avalanches that can bury players, destroy ships, and force them to seek higher ground, as well as snow storms that severely reduce visibility and affect ship handling. Ships in this region can become frozen, with ice building up on the hull, slowing movement and requiring special tools or heated stoves to break the ice. Icebergs will drift across the seas like hostile ships, with some mounting cannons manned by frozen skeletons and crystalline skeletons—dangerous enemies that use icy shards and frozen magic to attack. These icebergs will be formidable threats, with the skeletons using their cannons to fire at passing ships. The frozen cannons must be thawed before they can be used effectively, while players must rely on campfires and special outfits to keep warm and maintain movement, or risk being slowed down, much like when a ship's lower deck is flooded. New frozen skeleton enemies wielding ice weapons and crystalline skeletons that regenerate from icy waters will add to the danger, and the region will feature Tall Tales inspired by icy magic and lore, with characters like Olaf. Players will need to adapt to survive in this treacherous environment, using strategy and new mechanics to navigate the dangers of the cold and fight off enemies.
