Weapons Condition/Repair

  • Ahoy mates,

Today @KnifeLife started this topic about Gold Sink Ideas,
That inspired me about something that would somehow make us spend money and give a little more of immersion to our gameplay:

    Weapons Condition/Repair
Our weapons condition would deteriorate with the use we'd give them, so we would need to repair them from time to time by buying some sort of "Pirate Repair Kit" or paying the Weaponsmiths to repair them.

The Weapons would have an Health Bar and it could work as simple as IF we let the condition of a weapon reach 0% it would loose efficiency and deal a little less damage.

    Gun Example

    Sword Example

The use needed to deteriorate a weapon from 100% to 0% and the Cost of the Repairs and Kits would need to be balanced so new players could have some time to collect enough money for their own and to spend with repairs.
New players could start with a Repair Kit already.

EDIT: Or it could just be a deterioration cosmetic thing. Puting the Dealing Damage aside.

Keep your Sword Sharp and your Guns Clean! ;)

  • I like this idea. As long as Rare find a nice sweet spot, I think it would work out great.

  • Not gonna lie mate, i hate this idea.
Always hated weapon degrading in every game i have ever played.

What if it happens over a long period of time? A decently long period of time.

We used to have to think about going into fights because of supplies. Well, now we can hold stupid amounts of supplies. Now we can have to think about going into a fight by our weapon's health.

Again, I think it would have to take a long amount time. I can already picture Rare messing this up by making weapons degrade WAY too soon. If they implement this well (and without putting extra stuff all over our screen) it could add to the challenge and how we plan to attack or not to attack.

  • @dislex-fx
I just dont like survival elements at all. I get what ur sayin about supplies and stuff.

But whats gonna happen if i cant get somewhere to repair my weapons? Will i be defenseless? I dont wanna have to stop what im doin to go repair my weapon.

We already spend so long stockin the boat. Well at least i do. Im always stocking. I like to be prepared.

Idk mate. I just dont like weapon degrading. Never have never will.

I know we need a gold sink. Just hope its not this one

  • Because weapon degradation is always fun when you mix it with hit registration errors.

Scrounge up resources and repair your kit everytime I play Adventure?
Better hurry up and clear the outpost before some brigantine hauling Tall Tale or Dark Relic trash ganks you, because your obviously a threat.

    Yeah fun times mate.

  • @dislex-fx
For the record im not bashing the idea. @NunoAzuldimeter is a good forum member and his intentions are good. I just gotta disagree here.

Ill even throw out an idea for this just to be polite. If this idea did happen, blocking should degrade it more.

And u know Rare will nerf this to the point where its not worth it anyway 😑

What a coincidence... I know a game that's similar to SoT, but has crafting and item durability in it! It even has Hunger, and thirst, and a third thing that determines how close to becoming unconscious you are. It's a pirate fantasy survival multiplayer sandbox game.

Let's not do that, i think it would be simpler for you to just... Buy Atlas and play that game instead, tbvh.
I think it would be wiser to allow SoT to specialize in what it's good at... NOT being Atlas, for example. xD

  • @nunoazuldimeter I dont know about it, it never felt fun for me this mechanic in other games so i think im going to be against it.

  • It could be just a cosmetic thing tho...

    Interesting idea!

  • @nunoazuldimeter Yeah that sounds cool i wouldnt mind to see my blade "The Organ Donor" and my blunderbuss "The Orphan Maker" aging with battles gainins scars.

  • hate even having to repair weapons, it's a mechanic that has always bothered me.
They could make them get dirty, but without diminishing the damage.

  • @nunoazuldimeter Nop.

  • I would be up for hunger and thirst, but weapon durability would be way annoying, like finishing fort then being attacked by players just to find out you cant fight them because your weapon broke

    Nothing like that.
It couldn't break just by doing a.fort... it would need to be well.balanced. and you'd need to have a.visual.indocator of your weapons health.. so the same way you don't go to fight other players without enough resources and health low, you wouldn't go for a fort or fight with your weapon health at 10% durability.... I think...
You'd need to prepare before, by making sure your weapon are in good condition. And/or Making sure you have kits to repair it.

And also, as I said it could just be cosmetic and make any difference to the dealing damage.

don't like the idea because it sounds like minecraft but this game is not realistic as you know so not a good idea sorry

  • I love games like Minecraft and No Man's Sky but SOT is not a survival game like they are, and I don't like the idea of weapon degradation being a part of it.

I love that SOT is such a relatively simple game to play, and it's not about micro-managing things like that. Beyond maybe keeping track of supplies, and making sure your gun is loaded, there's very little to get in the way of just going on an adventure. I feel like this would be an unnecessary distraction, in a game with a lot of distractions already, and create a lot of unbalanced encounters and frustrated players.

What comes next, having to keep your pirate fed as health whittles away over time?

As was suggested above, Atlas is on that end of the spectrum if you like that sort of survival gameplay.

I wouldn't be totally against the idea of cosmetic-only wear and tear, we have that with ships, where they retain full functionality after being repaired but keep the paint chips and cracks on the outside.

    yeah that's right

  • Love the photos, I can imagine exactly what it would be like the wya you presented it. Informative. The only thing I wouldn’t like is adding more work to my voyage. Like it’s a new health bar I have to worry about.. I love the creativity but the quality of life is More important. For instance the way they reworked health, But made in better. If you add this we would need more ammo. Or stronger weapons at full health to incentivize the change
