UPDATED: Why Has Rare Not Publicly Committed To Adding More Content Or Given Us Any Kind Of Content Roadmap?

  • We need an announcement that shows the developer hears everyone's voice and is going to be adding new content at some point. I haven't seen anything like this announced yet, only bug patches.

UPDATE 2 We've got something close enough to what we need today! Check it out here!

UPDATE: A producer gave this statement to IGN & I think it is fantastic. Rare please take this statement and announce it also on this forum/website + add it as a message when players start up the game. Don't take chances and hope that people read IGN.

"Sea of Thieves is designed from the ground up to be a game that grows and evolves, and we will release new cosmetic options ongoing as part of that, alongside new mechanics and ways to play. Our focus for launch is on delivering a great initial experience, and as we move beyond launch we will be assessing and reacting to player feedback across all areas of the game. We have worked with our community throughout the development of Sea of Thieves, and that will continue in exactly the same manner beyond launch.”

I see a lot of complaints from people that would instantly be cured if they knew more content was on the way. Nerves can be calmed SO easily by simply committing to adding more content and nothing more.

We don't need specifics on what the content will be, or even an exact date, we literally just need to know that it is coming and that there will be a lot.

Many players right now it seems, are having trouble justifying investing time into SOT because its future is uncertain.

There is no content road map on where this game is going, which can solved by Rare publicly committing to improving SOT with significant amounts of new content.

We should be getting encouraged to stock up on gold because we will be dying to spend it on all the cool new content they will be improving the game with.

Also: I'm still having an absolute blast with this game. Fighting over a Skull Fort is some of the best heart pounding gaming I've had in a long time and I truly hope this game stays popular for a long time.

  • Most likely because they do not have one or it is so miniscule it is better to keep speculation than to tell the truth

  • They said in a video a couple days ago that they will have a video discussing some feedback later this week. Most likely tomorrow.

  • They have a road map for a couple of years, I believe.

But they aren't really under any obligation to reveal it.

Personally, I would like to be surprised and explore and discover things for myself rather than be told what's going to be added.

because in 4 years we have the exact same content we did in the 10th alpha

  • Haha got your money is how is how it feels I should know by now to not get excited always let down I thought maybe beta will be different nope just cant afford anything or solo anymore.

  • Maybe the investors bailed out already :p. But honestly it's probably because the first content update will be microtransactions, which will sink the game even deeper. They've already announced it before (MT pets in first update)I swear it feels like a total fool is making all the major decisions there.

  • The first event is planned shortly after launch, pets were definitely planned for a little further on. And its barely been a week and people are ready to start a public sacrifice over a developmental roadmap?

Exactly.... It's been ONE WEEK. They are still working on server issues and getting the game stable for the number of people on it before they worry about adding more to the game (and possibly making it more unstable)....

  • @sweetbeard90 Right on the mark

More like it's been a week and ya'll need to slow your roles.

Try this topic 3 months later.

No thanks. I absolutely love this game but anyone looking at it objectively can see that it needs more content. So let's get the issue solved now rather than later. The quicker we get an announcement, the quicker nerves will be calmed.

That is the sad thing. It has only been ONE WEEK and people are already bored with the minimal content. Kind of a shame because I like the game but is seriously lacking in most departments.

  • @sweetbeard90 Who is "people"? Speak for yourself.

I have ~300 hours in this game and haven't gotten bored of it yet....

  • @crash4654 Obviously. SoT is averaging 5/10 for the lack of content. A $60 game. If it would have enough stuff to do no one would ask about the roadmap. You think Rare is under a lot of pressure? Good! They should be glad that people are still on the forums and share their concerns instead of simply abandoning the game forever.

Go read the other forum posts along with a large group of game reviewers and streamers. Like are you blind? Would you like me to start linking every forum post and review for you for proof?

  • @sweetbeard90 I don't expect everyone to like this game. It's a new genre and won't be everyone's cup of tea. What I wish people would stop doing is trying to turn it into something it's not.

  • They need to add something before April 3rd or so many people that are already playing this for free with the game pass won't buy.

Speculation about what it will be is fine, we don't need to know what it will be, just that it's coming. In fact, not telling us will build even more excitement as the mystery of it is fun in and of itself.

I thoroughly enjoy SoT and have quite a few hours played, maybe 20-30 since launch but I am not going to blindly say it is all it can be when it is not. There is so much that the game is missing in my opinion for a $60 fully launched game and from what I have read and seen via twitch, youtube, etc. many other gamers feel the same.

They said in a video a couple days ago that they will have a video discussing some feedback later this week. Most likely tomorrow.

I saw it and I think they are clearly bogged down by server issues, glitches, bugs, and a sea (pun intended) of feedback from people who obviously love this game but really want to see improvements.

I'm guessing the last thing they want to think about is new content, which is fine, fix the bugs first, but announce the content now to calm people's nerves.

We don't even need to know the details of the road map, just a confirmation that it exists and a very conservative estimate for when content will start being released. People will stay around if they know all the gold they are acquiring and time they are investing will go towards new content.

Could you link me to that? I haven't seen anything like I've described in my OP.

  • Welcome, new pirates. Rare has stated repeatedly for well over a year that they have a large roadmap of content additions to implement over a course of years. But how they prioritize those ideas will depend on player feedback.

The first major content update was announced to occur in a few months and include the addition of legendary ships (advanced ship customizations for Pirate Legends, creating unique ships akin to the Black Pearl). Minor content updates will come more frequently. For example, they could add more pirate customization options to the clothing shops at any time.

It was always the stated intention of Rare to focus on launch first -- meaning improving server stability and knocking out any surprise bugs -- and then allowing players to voice their concerns or interests before selecting the next priority.

Community events will start in the next week or two.

Can you link me to anything that documents this 3 month content update? Not denying it, I've just searched and couldn't find much about post launch content and I'm dying to get my hands on anything I can.

Yep, if they were releasing content and not fixing the bugs, there'd be a lot of complaints. I guess the more you test and play online games, the more you get used to how things go after the launch.

During the AMA, they said bigger features would be added every few months.

Joe has said that they have a "show, not tell" policy with this game. They will never reveal features more than a couple of months ahead, (like what we know now with upcoming pets and speaking trumpets and ship captaincy).

They haven't given us a firm date and won't until they are 100% sure they can deliver it by that date.

  • Roadmaps ruin hype and excitement.

If we know what is coming 3 months and 6 months from now and 1 year from now and in what order the hype would start today.

I prefer a surprise a week before the patch/update drops and we can all go crazy about it.

Roadmaps are for development studios who are afraid of stupid posts like this topic. Rare said in an interview they have a roadmap but they prefer to be SECRETIVE and MYSTERIOUS in their delivery of additions to the game.

I am not a rare fanboy and this game needs more to do but I happen to respect their angle here. As for the title of this thread. Very inaccurate. Rare has commented publically on content and roadmaps you lazy low effort posting schlubs.

I appreciate the response. This is exactly why I created this thread, because an AMA answer is too vague and nowhere near as official as an actual announcement. The announcement is a very public commitment.

Not everyone is going to watch an AMA or even know how to find that. They should include that AMA answer in a content announcement that will be seen when players log into the game.

I'm fine with them not giving specifics on what they will release or a firm date. A range is sufficient to calm nerves. "In the next 3-6 months."

You can find the AMA answers on reddit through a quick google search, plus public statements on IGN like the article hallower linked to above. Just takes a little research. Topics like this one accusing them of "not publicly commenting" when they already have aren't helping anything. RARE has been more communicative through the development of this game than most developers.

Sorry, but some AMA answers do not carry anywhere near the same weight as announcements. Otherwise, then why do we even have announcements in the first place?

  • Just some relevant information I found googling that might help you out.

We have worked with our community throughout the development of Sea of Thieves, and that will continue in exactly the same manner beyond launch." -Joe Neate

"Sea of Thieves is pitched as a "games as a service" title – an approach to content distribution increasingly adopted among major video games. Buyers are investing in its long-term ecosystem, with the promise of further content updates in the coming months.

"Adopting this model, Sea of Thieves won't have post-launch DLC packs or season passes, preventing player separation in the long term. All major content updates will be provided for free, building upon the foundation currently available at launch. "

"While small updates and changes can be regularly expected, larger content drops will likely stretch out over multiple months."

"Daily and weekly events are on the roadmap too, including limited-time missions or variations on existing content."

"Among the possibilities are illusive non-player characters (NPCs) appearing across the world, with special missions for exclusive rewards. Dynamic world traits have also been discussed, changing up the existing Sea of Thieves experience."

"New merchants and trading companies are expected to hit Sea of Thieves too, beyond the trio currently found in-game. With each trading company offering its own unique quest types, new companies will likely bring new activities to partake in."

I criticised the game and you. The name of the thread is inaccurate and false. Rare has publically commented about content and roadmaps. That is why you were trashed for being a low effort posting schlub. Which you are. Please don't try to be polite and say thanks and stuff as if you have valid criticisms. The title of your post is a literal falsehood.

When the executive producer of the game makes a public statement on an Xbox hosted AMA, that carries a lot of weight.
