Monsters, Maelstroms, Mermaids, Magic, and More

  • Hey so I’ve recently started playing the game with my friends and we are loving it! It’s really inspired us to imagine all kinds of other things that could feature in the game, so I’m just gonna list some of the ideas I’ve had for what would be fun and cool to add in and improve the experience even more. Please consider these things!

    In no particular order:

    1. Sea serpents, Aspidochelone, Kraken body. The Megalodons and Krakens are great, but the game could really benefit from a third sea monster encounter to be made possible. The most obvious inclusion for another iconic sea monster that has not yet been represented in the game would of course be a sea serpent or Leviathan of some kind. I would love to see what you guys would do with such a creature, and there already are enough skeletons around the Sea of Thieves world that appear to be from such a monster that I’m surprised you haven’t already added it! Another great sea creature to include that probably wouldn’t be one for a fight, but rather as the explanation behind what could be a single island that is mysteriously always moving is the “Aspidochelone,” which is the name for the mythological concept of a giant turtle whose back is an entire island. Finally, in reference to the Kraken, whenever this infamous creature appears in any movie or book or game or anything, the number 1 thought in my head is always “What does its body look like?” And the same goes for the Kraken of SoT, especially seeing how uniquely you designed its tentacles. It would be amazing if you could add a new attack or something for the Kraken that would involve it raising at least part of its head/body out of the inky water so it could be seen and perhaps opening its huge, horrible mouth to swallow the ship or something!
    2. Whirlpools, waterspouts. To add a couple more dynamic weather features in the open ocean could really make things that much more exciting. Whirlpools are a pretty obvious inclusion, and waterspouts could be delightfully terrifying, as well. To occasionally have to avoid oncoming vortexes of these sorts one sees as their ship approaches would really make sense, be exciting, and could lend itself to some homages to other great seafaring depictions of the phenomena as well (including that epic whirlpool scene from Pirates of the Caribbean), even further fulfilling the pirate fantasy that Sea of Thieves is.
    3. Underwater city, Mermaids, Ocean Crawlers. I know there are already a few ancient, underwater structures and things out there, but it would be phenomenal if, perhaps as part of a Tall Tale, players could visit an entire sunken civilization, perhaps depicting where the Mermaids live, who could as friendly and/or hostile NPC’s. Mermaids could also sometime appear perhaps on rocks that stick up out of the ocean and behave more like the evil Sirens. Another thing is, ever since I saw the Ocean Crawler cosmetics and customizations, I have wondered what an “Ocean Crawler” IS, as, going by the color scheme and similar biological elements throughout all of the clothes and equipment and ship parts and such, it looks as if it must be a specific species of brightly colored crustaceous creature in the game’s world, which is perhaps hunted for its parts to be used in all of these different cosmetic pieces. And now I just can’t help but think about how awesome it would be for there to be a race of big, crab-like creatures crawling around as another enemy type perhaps in the underwater city or even just anywhere on the ocean floor and even sometimes crawling up onto land for short durations! And perhaps there could be several types, including some that looked more crab-esque, some more lobster or even part starfish or coral something, and some even having elements like a giant creepy angler fish or other real-life creatures of the deep, as if they were a composite aquatic species. Definitely including elements in the game of the mysterious creatures that live deep in the oceans in real life would be cool.
    4. Returning time-limited events / items. We newcomers who joined for the anniversary didn’t get the chance to experience all the cool campaigns and exclusive cosmetic items that came with earlier updates! It would be a dream if you were to bring back some of the old events every once in a while (once a year?) so we can experience the stories and get the gear. I would love to finally meet this Merrick fellow everybody talks about and to get the Wailing Barnacle and Bone Crusher clothing set!
    5. More items, with effects. Of course we would all love for there to be even more clothes, weapons, ship parts, etc., but also something that would be cool is if some clothes and weapons would actually have special effects, such as actually acting as armor increasing your resistance to damage somewhat, or boots that increase speed or jumping, or swords or guns that do more damage, and so on. They could be worth more or be hard to unlock, to keep the balance.
    6. More magic. It would be really cool and enhance the piratey dream if magic could have a bit more of a presence in the world; perhaps we could learn to do or use voodoo magic or items to some degree, or we could go to the Order of Souls to have weapons enchanted to do poison damage or any number of other effects, perhaps like that of the cursed cannonballs, and perhaps only temporarily if it would be too overpowered.
    7. Royal Navy, Spanish Armada? This is just another little potential idea I had that might not even fit into the lore you had in mind and so it’s no big deal, but it could potentially be kind of interesting to see what you guys would do with bringing non-pirate soldiers in the Sea of Thieves. They could perhaps be another enemy, sailing around occasionally or stationed in forts, like the current ghost ships do. Perhaps they could even arrest players sometimes and there could be a sort of minigame in which we have to make an escape.

Anyway, I thank you if you read this, and I really hope there’s I chance we could see some of these things in the game! Maybe you’re already working on some of it.

  • These are some really amazing ideas! I hope Rare reads your first three suggestions and adds those in. The only suggestion that I was not a fan of was the return of time limited events. In the future, two/three years from now could be a appropriate time to break up the time between larger content updates. Again, love your ideas!

  • 1: The krakens of the Sea of Thieves are an interesting species, which does have a concept for the body's design, however it would so rarely be seen without a large revamp to it's attack patterns and would be so difficult to both model and attach to the tentacles that it isn't a priority. Long sea snakes are interesting, though I'm not sure how they're supposed to really attack (wrapping the length of it's body around the ship should sink it from weight alone, so probably not that). The island turtle is one I have always liked, though the concept of moving islands is not always an easy one to implement.
2: Whirpools and maelstroms have always been a community requested feature, though not as widely as, say, fishing. There's a fairly long list of suggestions on how they could work, and what they could do with expanding on the mechanic here on the forums. Waterspouts seem a bit much though, perhaps in that larger storm some people want.
3: Merfolk and their undersea structures are a long in the making, both in mechanics and lore. Be patient for something like that, it will come, just perhaps not too soon.
4: I'd say 1-2 years after the items' original showing, they could be brought back again. Not permanently, and not for free. Perhaps locked behind similar commendations, if permanent re-additions to the game.
5: You've got the balance backwards - having all types of weapons available from the start is what keeps it balanced, as a level playing field. Perhaps some PvE only advantages, like the lantern sword suggested long ago for fighting shadow skeletons, for instance.
6: Using excessive magic can ruin how it appears. The magic in the Sea of Thieves is not seen at every turn, but it's known to all in it and has it's own place, examples being the Devil's Shroud or the skeletons. If everything had it the more impressive magic wouldn't be impressive anymore.
7: You are correct, the single tight, shifting passage through the Devil's Shroud does not let fleets or large ships through, which is why groups such as the Grand Maritime Union, a trading company which once was in the Sea of Thieves bu was kicked out, would need something such as the ancient's portal network (part of which is centralized and large enough for ships) or the Shroudbreakers. It is important that the sailors of the Sea of Thieves be ready to fight for their lifestyle. I believe the ambient skeleton ships were meant to satiate the constant desire for 'roaming NPC ships', in place of a navy as they fit the lore better for the time.

  • Great insights, thanks guys.

Also just realized I forgot to add any tags in. Hopefully that doesn’t prove to be a problem...

  • Ahoy! Welcome to the Sea of Thieves and forums mate! Nice write up and a good read. Ideas are up there with all the great ideas and suggestions the community has given for a very long time.

Here is s link to the Community Ideas Master List. It unfortunately is not being kept up. Still a must read. Wish we could take over maintaining the list.

  • i like all your ideas except one and kind of the sixth - idea 4, Returning time-limited events / items. - they are called time-limited for a reason. The developers have said that they like having exclusive items that fewer players will have so so many ships/pirates will be different and it's unlikely you come across the same ship or pirate. The sixth one i'm fine with but just it's not minecraft we cant enchant our weapons and I think aside from that it's a good idea but maybe instead us going to someone to do this these items randomly spawn in a server and have a one-time use..?

  • @n1njagamer13 Welcome! Glad you are enjoying the game so far!

I like these ideas and have been waiting for a lot of them for as long as I can remember. The only one I don't think would fit is item upgrades. Rare has been pretty adamant that all players should be on an even playing field at all times.

  • @x-Crowheart-x
Wow, there’s a lot of good ideas in that thread! I hope some of them get added. Thanks for the link.

You are very welcome. Many of us hope they will. Happy sailing!

  • I’m not really too committed to the final two items in my list necessarily, though I do think there are ways to implement more magic that would not be obtrusive (like I don’t think potions and voodoo artifacts would ruin anything, for example), but I would like to address some of the other comments that have been made.

Concerning the Kraken thing, I looked up some images to see that body design you referenced, and it seems like they really have some interesting ideas for it. But I don’t see why it would require a big revamp or anything; they could easily add a chomping attack like the Meg’s at any point in the fight that doesn’t require the tentacles to move or anything, as there’s plenty of space for a head and the tentacles could just be long and curved enough to stay where they are from the body without a problem, connecting unseen under the inky water. Or they could even just have the head poking partly out of the water to look at its victims for a long duration without having to do anything until retreating under the water again if shot enough or something. As for the sea serpent, the Kraken wraps its tentacles around the ship without immediately sinking it - a sea serpent could do the same thing. Or it could also do a chomp attack like the Meg. Or some sea serpents are depicted as breathing fire I think, so that’s another cool option. There’s even concept art I’ve found of a sea-serpent/eel-styled Kraken for SoT that would be perfect design-wise, as well as for the method of attack, as it is shown spiraling around the ship and just surrounding it in electricity. And I don’t see how a moving island would be any harder to implement into the game than moving ghost ships, which likewise are constantly moving, non-player-controlled, fully interactable entities that can be walked on and such.

As for waterspouts, I think they would be simply perfect for spicing up than regular old storm. They wouldn’t be in every storm, of course, only certain ones from time to time, but the Sea of Thieves is within the Bermuda Triangle for pity sake, so it’s really not a stretch to expect weather phenomena of that sort there being a semi-regular occurrence.

I sure hope what I was told about the Merfolk thing will end up being right, though!

  • It should also be noted that apparently an “island-mimic” Kraken was considered, going by the concept art, that appeared to essentially be what the turtle would be, so perhaps that would help in the process of implementing it, as well.

Also, in the latest developer update, Duke’s Black Market was announced, which will feature new cosmetic items as well as variants of old time-limited ones! I think that’s probably a good compromise for those who still want to have their original stuff be exclusive.
