@cotu42 It could work better in certain situations but it might be harder to program on moving ships, at least shooting it in the air doesn't have to account for movement.

@cotu42 the problem wouldn't be the item on the ground, but the smoke coming from it, it would trail behind the ship when moving and going up when standing still, so it's technically a bit harder. I'm not a dev so maybe it's really easy to implement.
I just think it's cool to shoot it in the air or on the ground, but like @instatikz said the problem still stands that if everyone get at least one flare, PVP situations can get really chaotic with all the smoke on the ground, so I replied that flares would need two timers before despawning, one longer when in the air and one way shorter when touching the ground, so you can't fill an area with smoke for more than a couple of seconds. Or you could just make it so it instantly fades away once reaching the ground, thus working ONLY in the air.@offic3rravioli trailing is fine for me.
The thickness and density of the smoke would need to be considered, when looking at PvP. If it isn't wide enough to cover a skinny pirate, it could me a small high smoke pillar. I don't think that they would interfere much with combat. Maybe even adds to the atmosphere.
