Poor performance on PC?

  • Hey guys, so here's your typical "help me" thread regarding the PC performance issues.

I've seen people play this game at 150+ FPS, and I've seen others play it at 30. I'm having this odd issue where, no matter what graphic settings or resolution I run the game at, my average frame rate is always the same. 45-60. It's massively inconsistent, and I've had drops down to 10 fps for seemingly no reason at all. This makes it so engaging in fights is hard if not impossible at times.

So, I'm wondering. Is there anything that I can do on my end to potentially improve performance? I'm on a laptop that has a GTX 1070, 16GB RAM, and i7 8750, and never run into any issues on other seemingly more intensive games. A friend of mine that has basically half my hardware gets the same frame rate as me, which just doesn't seem right. No thermal throttling is occurring.

To note, these issues started happening recently. Perhaps two or so updates ago. Before that, I was able to run the game at above 80 fps without any problems. So, could an update have caused this? Should I try and reinstall or something? Or is the game simply unstable right now? Also note that my GPU is never stressed beyond 30% usage, and my CPU about the same. The only thing I've done that might affect the game is I installed the latest video drivers, and updated the game to the latest version. I also have shadowplay (nvidia share I think it's called now) enabled. That doesn't cause performance issues in other games, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try disabling that just to test.

Anybody have any tips or ideas on why this is happening? Is it the game, my system, or cthulhu?

  • @sidular i noticed a slight decrease in fps on certain islands, but nothing to what you are experiencing. It appears your specs are pretty good for a laptop rig, so it's definitely strange you are having those issues. Have you tried to disable shadow play to see if you get the same results?

  • I had the same problem in the past. Changing the resolution to 900p was a workaround, but not a good one, for sure. I had my capture card cloned to my first display. Uncloning solved the issue completely. My frames jumped from 30 to 50 to 100+. Maybe this works for you, too?

Also check if the internal APU may be active for the game, instead of the better graphic card.

  • Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses. :D

There seems to be some kind of shadowplay incompatibility going on. With shadowplay disabled entirely (no overlay at all) the game runs fine. It's not quite at the levels that it was a few updates ago, but it's leagues better. Not sure if this is a shadowplay issue, or a game issue. No other games are affected by this, only SOT. But either way, it seems to have been resolved now.

Really a shame, too. I enjoy using shadowplay, and up until recently, have had no issues with performance while shadowplay was running. Something definitely killed performance, whether that's SOT itself being updated, or a nvidia driver update. Either way, it was working fine a few months ago, and then it sort of just stopped. Hopefully the devs (or nvidia?) can look into this, though I know it's probably a very low priority for them.

  • The games max FPS seems to be capped by your monitors refresh rate. At least for me. Try these 2 steps that got my game running smooth.

    • Go into your gpu settings (access by right clicking your desktop) and make sure that your monitors highest refresh rate is enabled. For me its 75hz.

    • set your screen resolution ingame to 'native' not '1080x1920' or other options.

Thanks for the response! The issue seemed to be related to shadowplay, at least in my particular case.

  • I know this is an old thread but iv been having a problem with fps on sot for a while now on my Alienware 15 r3 With a gtx 1070.

Basically for the first few minutes it would run fine, then my fps would drop to around 50-60 (i normally cap it to 72) and would feel more like it was 30-40 fps, then if i tabbed out of sot and back in id suddenly be back up to 72 for a few minutes.

Turned out it was G-sync all along! Turned it off in nvidia control panel and now its running great, even capped at 60fps it feels smooth.

    Hope this helps someone anyway.

  • Old thread, but I figured maybe I'd save another soul the trouble. Running an I5 7600k, GTX 1070 and 16 gigs of RAM. Was having HORRIBLE fps drops. 60, then into the 20s when around mobs. Never experience anything like it in any game, ever. What fixed my problem 100%.. My RAM was never set to XMP in my BIOS. I was running my 3200 RAM at 2100. A tad embarrassing, but when I tell you it fixed my problems.. it 100% did.

I originally thought it were my processor being bottlenecked! As it was running around 70-80% load while doing forts. Not the case. At. All.

  • There have already been given good answers, but I can only add that it might be worth trying to clean the laptop. I mean to try applications like Cclean and so on. Btw I recently have found an article about registry cleaner tools https://thinkmobiles.com/blog/best-registry-cleaner-tools/ . Read it, maybe you will find something for yourself. Most of them are free. Cleaning in general really improves the optimization, and if nothing has helped before, then at least try to clean your laptop.
