Shrouded Ghost Megalodon is WAY too rare

  • @txcrnr he'll pop up eventually, whats the rush?

  • Some of you are not understanding the concept of a white whale. It is supposed to be elusive and difficult to achieve. I would be 100% okay if it took 20 years on average to accomplish. The difficulty is the underlying idea of “white whale.” This is what I assume they were going for when they came up with this one. I think it was clever.

EDIT: Seriously? The title of a classic book is blocked? At least I am sure most people can noodle that one out.

  • @ghostpaw You do realize that Moby Dck wasn't hunted by Ahab because he was rare. He was hunted by Ahab because he took his leg and became his nemesis. It has nothing to do with the rarity of the whale and everything to do with a vendetta. Citing Moby Dck improperly isn't even a valid argument in this context. If this was just a random world event, then rarity wouldn't matter. The fact that is is tied to the progression system, which is meant to be a reward system for work done in the game, and then relegating that to a purely RNG encounter is the problem. How is this so hard for people to understand?

  • @flying-poopla Moby Dhick is a pretty terrible metaphor. But doesnt change the fact that theres no rush or deadline to get the commendation... Right? Its a commendation purely based on luck or "rng" and theres nothing wrong with that. Its obviously supposed to be a special occurrence and something that is a shock to see.
If theres no deadline and its all luck why put stress on yourself to complete it, itll happen when it happens...

  • The game has a lot of easily reachable short-term goals. There's nothing wrong with having a few long-term goals, like rare megalodons. There are some commendations I know will take a long time for me to get, and I'm fine with that. Others I enjoy grinding towards. But I really appreciate having some that I know will just require patience and many hours of game time. Those goals mean there will always be something more to accomplish. I love being free to sail around hunting for the legendary beast known as the Shrouded Ghost. You never know what else might happen along the way. It's really engaging gameplay.

Yes, I realize why the whale was hunted. I think you are determined to see things in a very specific way to make your argument. The relevant point here was that it was very difficult to find and defeat the whale (despite the motive for doing so)... the very reason we now use the term “white whale” to indicate a very challenging and elusive goal that is relentlessly pursued. It is similar to how we use the term “unicorn” when we mean something special that is very rarely witnessed. The term is sometimes used just to describe obsession, but even then the great difficulty in obtaining the goal is implied. Reducing the book down to just being about the motive for the hunt is doing it a disservice and is a very surface level approach. It is a complex book with a number of underlying themes and ways to approach it. This is partly why it is a classic. You may not see why it led to using the term “white whale” but a great number of people did. The Shrouded Ghost shares unmistakable similarities with a white whale

“an objective that is relentlessly or obsessively pursued but difficult to achieve.”

@ionei-falcon See my reply above, it statistically will take you years of gameplay to find a single one.

    Meh I found mine

  • I would be in the exact same boat as you right now, complaining I have not seen the ghost (because I still haven’t after hours of plat, ancient is rare seen only 3 times, and Karen just as rare for me) IF you absolutely NEEDED the deblounes. I am working on a previous adventure set in order to get the timed exclusives, and don’t need the ghost to get it. You can get all the timed without doing it “right now”. Do other achievements to get what you need.

Mody D was rare though, It was the one whale that hunted whale hunters and was white. Sure thats not why Ahab hunted it, but it still was a one of a kind whale. I dont hunt the shrouded meg because it is rare.Just like Ahab. I hunt because its the one that got away/cant catch.

How many barrels will thy vengeance yield thee even if thou gettest it, Captain Ahab? it will not fetch thee much in our Nantucket market."
"Nantucket market! Hoot! But come closer, Starbuck; thou requirest a little lower layer. If money's to be the measurer, man, and the accountants have computed their great counting-house the globe, by girdling it with guineas, one to every three parts of an inch; then, let me tell thee, that my vengeance will fetch a great premium here!"
"He smites his chest," whispered Stubb, "what's that for? methinks it rings most vast, but hollow." Colloquy between Ahab and Starbuck, with commentary by Stubb

  • Point 1: All these people saying that it being unbelievably rare is more rewarding are missing something... If only 100 people ever actually kill one, they will feel extremely rewarded. But if 10,000 people kill one, they might feel slightly less excited about it (I mean why woulda ya, but maybe) but that's still 100x more people being excited. So enough of your grandstanding about rarity being some sort of virtue.

Point 2: This probably is too rare even to find 5. A month after the update I can find a total of three videos on YouTube of someone fighting a ghost meg (and a lot of clickbait). If it was just some fun meg fight with a cool achievement attached that would be fine, but the fact that some insane rarity is tied to other things you have been working on is pretty cruel.

I'd like to know how many of these "you'll find it when you find it, if you ever actually find it." people have found it.

  • I've been playing at least 6 to 8 hours since the shrouded spoils and I can tell you I haven't spotted a single one. There are people who saw it within the first week.

RNG rarity does not mean its going to work out in the end and everyone gets one. RNG rarity is like the lottery. Some people will never see it.

Theres going to be a huge disparity between the people who have seen it multiple times vs the people who haven't even seen it even once. I have always hated RNG rarity drops. Its like the lottery, some people win multiple times while some never win ever.

  • I'm glad it's hard to find. I've sailed many hours and have yet to spot one.
Same goes for the box of wonders, i've yet to lay my eyes upon one of them either.
But one day i will find either and will be extremely happy to do so.
Let's not make everything in the game too easy huh.

  • @txcrnr I have seen it, but some randos joined and got my boat sunk right as it spawned. Two days later, my friend and I saw it again but were too close to an island and it despawned, as we had turned around and there was only a crested queen in its place. All in all, I'm more mad that I havent had a chance to even open fire than I am at the fact ive seen it twice and have nothing to show for it..
