Warping Portals

  • Given that the SoT map will likely continue to grow and expand, I’d love to see the inclusion of portals that let you warp from one area to another. Only because it already takes a long time to get from one end to another. I don’t think it should be many - maybe two or three sets - and should be timed so they can’t be spammed. Perhaps they only show up at 2am and 2pm each day and only stay open for one in-game hour.

Naturally, it could come in with another update with some sweet lore behind it and maybe a short, timed campaign.

It’d solve the extensive travel time problem and it’d be a great centerpiece for a new update! What does everyone think?

  • eh, i'd be against that as it would be something that would turn this game into a fortnite wannabe with portals. I'd rather see some sort of powerful rip current in specific parts of the map if it does indeed get bigger. The currents could give a good speed boost to ships for a short or medium distance.

  • @snazzbox Iv'e heared many variation on this concept such as Wirlpool, Rip Tides/Tsunami's and Map wraping aka Globe warping. I mean it can see the need for these quick travel ideas as the game most time consuming aspect is sailing to an area with not much to do. All these idea's have been shut down one reason or another. I hope your portal idea fair better. One possible issue i see with this is that it will be jarring and would break immersion for those that cared as it most like induce a Loadscreen.

  • Your perception of a non-issue as an issue is the only problem here.

  • Sailing your boat from one destination to another is a core game concept

Your suggestion is an awesome way to break the game Rare has worked so hard to build.

    Thanks for posting.

  • @galactic-geek How hostile of a response for you.

    1. I didn’t say it was needed right this very moment. I was referring to the possibility of needing it in the future.

    2. It’s fine you don’t agree, but don’t insinuate I’m stupid for suggesting it.

  • @chronodusk Care to venture a few?

  • @enticed-malice “Fortnite wannabe”? I don’t understand.

  • @snazzbox I’m going to disagree on portals - it breaks the immersion; will require a loading screen; skips a majority of the game content which is sailing; and could be exploited by certain playstyles

I wouldn’t be opposed to quicker travel routes when the map does get large enough though. A rip current like @ENF0RCER suggested earlier, even stronger winds/gales, but these would need to be dynamic and constantly changing.

A portal makes it too easy for a heavily PvP focussed crew to just sit at an exit waiting to broadside the next ship to plop into existence. I’m not sure if you played during the Hungering Deep - but this happened a lot when the campaign required you to head to Shark Bait Cove

I didn't insinuate either of those - I'm simply stating that your solution is unnecessary because there is no problem. You're basically creating solutions by making problems out of mole-hills, and you are doing it again by assuming that I'm insinuating something when I'm not. Again, you see problems where none exist.

  • @snazzbox As the map expands, I hope that the respawn of ships sunk expands with it. There is a common complaint that ships don’t respawn far enough away. Portals would just make the issue the same or worse as the world expands.

I’d be much more interested in ideas that make travel interesting than in fast travel solutions.

  • @snazzbox

This isn't something I'd be happy to see in game, yes it does take some time to sail across the map and being a sailing/pirate game part of the gameplay is being able to observe other ships, predict what they might do and act accordingly or just keep an eye on them, there are also a lot of emergent elements which you encounter sailing the seas.

  • Firstly, I will just say, I am against the idea, but I think it is bad form for those who are replying just to say it is a bad idea and not saying why. It's not a great feeling when you make a forum idea and just get told that your opinion is invalid...

But I'm with @ENF0RCER with rip tides or a globed map, this will make navigation a real task. Atm you can just say the direction and head in that direction. With these as methods of reducing time of travel/distance, you get alternate routes. A good navigator will tell you what direction the island is in, a great navigator could tell you the direction that will get you their faster.

A portal would most deffo break the immersion in my opinion.

Failing any of this, just the simple additions of activities whilst on the ship could help pass the time.

  • @katttruewalker Wouldn’t that kind of add to it, though? It’d be a new way of potential escape if you’re getting chased down by other pirates. You could send a rowboat through and leave your ship behind to do a voyage, get it done, then travel through it again. They could even bring in a new voyage type or even a whole new faction. Losing out on emergent gameplay wouldn’t be lost with the addition of portals.

  • @galactic-geek sigh

You are insinuating that I was saying this is something that’s needed right now because you said there “is no problem”. I’m saying there “will be” a problem as the map expands. Future tense means that it isn’t happening right now. Depending on the size and what you want to do, eventually travel time will rack up to half an hour and nobody’s gonna want to go that far, traveling for that long.

Secondly, you are assuming I’m stupid or at the very least my opinion is invalid. You don’t have to share my opinion. That’s why they’re called opinions. Just because we disagree doesn’t mean there won’t be an issue...for me...when the map expands. Everybody has their own ideas of how a game should or might play out. Everybody has different wants for how the game could be. So, if you have a problem with it, please go troll someone else.

  • No portals please. The idea of a strong stream style current that bisects the map in different ways is awesome though.
These streams should always appear in generally the same zones, but slightly different on every server.
If you align your wheel with the stream, it should naturally keep you centered, barring strong crosswinds or storms.
This would give ships a place to "naturally" converge, for good or ill.

  • @snazzbox Fair enough. However, it stands to reason that as the map expands, more things will be added to fill the gaps - seaposts are already evidence of this. It won't be completely empty space. So don't worry! Besides, from what I hear, the map can't get much bigger due to the engine's limitations. Filling in the gaps where the veil hides all is pretty much all they have room for.

I think this kind of idea is the way to go. Like sea highways. This could more gampleplay styles as it would most likely lead to trade routes and allow for more frequent encounter rates. Plus it would reward skill as the need for a good navigater and helmsmen becomes more valued. As mentioned by @DuMy2008. This idea should be explored further in a seperate post.

Portals inherently lead to possible unfair and unavoidable encounters as brought up by @TheTwistedTaste. They are best left as entrances to othewise inaccessiable parts of the map like FTOD and AF hideout.

Any else have any other thoughts?
