Not feeling like a true pirate

  • I'm sure this has come up before, but I'm going to say it anyways. I don't feel like a pirate playing this game. Pirates are a phenomenon. I have found them fascinating ever since I was a kid, I'm sure you have too. Although growing up I learned a few things about them.

I learned that treasure wasn't really buried like in the stories. Their enemies were not skeletons, but the government. And they relied on plundering from merchant ships, not working as one.

In this game it's just like that. Sure killing skeletons are fun, I can forgive that. Although I do not feel the least b****s transporting cargo back and forth. What would feel great would be to steal from a merchant. I would love to see that in the game. Maybe have a quest where you buy a schedule where a ship is going to pass by, and you need to take it's loot. Either by sinking their ship completely and getting half the cargo, or make them surrender and raise the white flag. Maybe give it an escort that you need to fight too? I get that the skeleton ships are kind of the same concept but they're really just not cutting it for me.

  • @spanolio I agree. We are not pirate like in any way, but we are sailors.
Sailors had this lore in the seas about Krakens, Megalodons, mermaids, and skeletons.

We are more like Sinbad the sailor than any pirate. The closest pirate book would be Treasure Island because at least there was treasure buried.

Speaking of sailors, why do we eat bananas and not spinach? Popeye was a sailor and he ate his spinach.

  • @spanolio You can try to steal me or some other pirates on the sea, it will be more fun than stealing a poor npc without any defense...

  • @rod-runner-67 steal from the Spaniards they’re filthy rich with gold, at least back in “those times.”

  • @spanolio Sea of Thieves aims to give players the most fantastical experience about pirates, much like Pirates of the Caribbean. So if you don't feel like a proper pirate 'cause of inaccuracies, I don't think that's going to change anytime soon mate.

SoT was hugely inspired by books like Treasure Island and On Stranger Tides, and also the movie The Goonies.

Hardly historical documents those, but it's about giving us a world made of childlike wonder about the fun and mythical image of pirates.

Not the scurvy ridden, poor as a church mouse, illiterate and social outcasts from actual history.

  • @spanolio Anyone even remotely acting like a pirate in this game is now frowned on, called a 10 year old, and labeled as a toxic griefer.
People want the Sea but no Thieves.

  • Yeah this is a whimsical Disney esque rendering of a pirate world it's not a gritty real to life pirate world...obviously.

Skull and bones is s new pirate game coming that looks like it will meet those yearnings for something more realistic and historically accurate. See you there.

  • In a game where you choose your own path and make your own adventure. I was a little disappointed at how you are automatically considered a pirate to begin with. I for one follow the traditional rules of engagement, and never conducted acts of piracy. But never hold others to my standards. The unknown of people’s intentions is what makes this game so great. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Stay blood thirsty you pirates. Yar Be the ones that keep me on me toes.

  • @cmm-solo a dit dans Not feeling like a true pirate :

Skull & Bones, realistic and historically accurate? Just have a look at the sails in that game... they look like they are taken from Star Wars to a pirate game... My bad, I forgot Solo is a pirate!

  • @rod-runner-67 Yeah, while at first glance it'll appear more accurate, and it'll feature historical pirate characters, it's going to be every bit as fantastical as Pirates of the Caribbean, Kraken included.

  • I for one would like to stick it to the gold hoarder guy. Sick of him taking a cut. Give me the **** keys... all of them!!!!

  • Sea of Thieves is about the romanticised version of Pirates we know from Folklore, the Goonies, Treasure Island etc. - it's not about historical accuracy.

It's about the true Pirate you imagined being as a kid, not the gritty reality.

  • @Tundra-793 @thor-von-blitz Don't get me wrong, I love pirate fantasy. I'm not saying it should be totally historically accurate. I am aware that it's my personal opinion that I'd like to see the things I mentioned implemented into the game. I guess what I am trying to say is that the game needs more action.

There are few times where I feel epic or heroic in this game. Those times being, either fighting other crews or fighting the the skeleton ships, due to the epic music playing and it coming out of the water.

I LOVE that Rare is trying to make the game what our childhood pirate fantasies were, but digging up chests becomes really "dry" and boring after a good while. Same goes for collecting skulls. It's not really fun getting the horde of skellies to the beach so that your crew mates can shoot them with the cannons. It becomes extremely repetitive, and almost never does it become a new experience.

I feel like it's almost as if Rare is afraid to push their boundaries. Although you can eliminate other players in the game, the only NPC's you can kill in the game besides skeletons are the animals (Not saying you should be able to kill the already existing NPC's). Even that is as peaceful as ever. When you kill a pig it simply falls asleep and fades away. Also, it's been about seven months since the game released and there is still no ship naming? I understand Rare don't want trolls to mess with the game, but it's slightly awkward seeing the empty sign above the captains quarters. Either way, ship naming or not, you are going to have to deal with trolls, it's the internet. If they can't write their racial slurs on the sign, I can assure you they will scream it from the top of their lungs don't their microphones.

  • If you want a game with a more pirate feeling theme, give Sid Meier's Pirates a go :)

This game as other people have said is more fantasy pirates.

  • @haydnsym45 said in Not feeling like a true pirate:

Good luck. They keys are cursed; you turn to gold if you take them out to sea with you.

  • @eelporridge I loved Sid Meiers Pirates!! It gets discounted on GOG.com and Steam every so often.
Gold, governor's daughters, other famous pirates, finding your lost family, and the best part a revenge story.
    Great pirate game.

Someone suggested this game is inspired by the Goonies. I am not sure where Goonies inspired this game. There isn't anything remotely Goonies about it. Could we at least have a Chester Copperpot reference in one of the caverns?

  • @br0crastinat0r actually, your beginning role is a sailor stated by being the only title your given. You can work your way up to different looks of a mystical pirate but you honestly start as a somewhat humble sailor.

  • @weststormborn I think he might have ment that the tasks you are given in the game are not very "piraty", but more what a sailor would do in those times. I might be wrong though.

  • @rod-runner-67

I think you misinterpreted what I had to say. Skull and bones looks to satasfy more of the yearning for something closer to historical and real to life, I never said it would be an absolute accurate rendering of pirate life in the 1700's lol
And yes, solo was a pirate ✊️

  • @cmm-solo I thought Solo was a smuggler.

  • @d-jaguar indeed

  • @d-jaguar @Spanolio

    Ahoy there,

Just for interest there's an article here where the Goonies inspiration is explained from a design point of view.

Sea of Thieves is not meant to be a realistic pirate game, it's set in a fictional, fantastical world set apart from the Caribbean of the 18th century and the famous pirates who sailed in those times.

There is some reasoning in the lore for Sea of Thieves as a secret and guarded location for why we don't have Navy, large scale Spanish Treasure ships and the like - these forces don't have access to the world - the new Merchant NPC on Morrow's Peak does mention she'd like to see a Navy however, so it does exist as a part of the real world.

and this video does help explain as well -

  • @katttruewalker Speaking of Goonies - it was on UK TV last night! Still missed it :'(

  • We're on a sea of thieves, we're all both merchants and pirates. If you want to loot a merchant ship just go attack another player ^_^

  • I'm sure if you had to gather 50 players and sail for a couple of days to intercept a merchant ship, have them surrender their cargo, and sail back, you wouldn't be happy about that either.

  • @spanolio it's funny how "Disney" this game can be but they always say how they want to stay away from "party bag" pirates. You are not alone in feeling a longing for a more dark and realistic pirate life. I am pretty sure they are planning to modify the skeleton ships. I could see them changing them enough to give us the taste of pillaging. But maybe they will want to keep that PVP only.

  • @spanolio I think you got it wrong. It's Sea of Thieves, not Sea of Pirates. It's not a simulation of a pirate's life, it's not limited to being a pirate. You can decide freely how you want to act at sea. As a merchant? As a carrier? Or as a pirate? In all cases, be aware that anyone can change their mind at any time. A trader sees an opportunity for theft? Why not! A pirate accepts a trade? If it is lucrative, why not? Surely as a trader you will have to reckon with meeting players who are on the move as pirates.

  • @rk1-turbulence If you read my second post in this thread you would have understood that I am not asking for realism, but adventure. I am not at all saying you should gather 50 players and sail for days? That would be the complete opposite of what I want. You don't have to gather even full crew to fight the skeleton ships. Which in theory, a ship filled with undead skeletons should be far more dangerous than a simple merchant ship.

  • @goedecke-michel Alright so it's sea of thieves then, it really does not matter. You can literally only steal from other players, no one else. So, who's to say it shouldn't be called sea of merchants, since that's one of the very few in-game quests you can do. What about sea of chest finders, or sea of skull hunters? I see your point, but pirates were the thieves of the sea.

  • @anubis316 Good to see other people that share the same thoughts as me. I mean I can't really say I could expect it to be any violent, it's close to being a cartoon game after all.

  • @spanolio no, you decide whether you act as pirate, or you don't.
