Gender-Based Clothing Previews, or Remove the Differing Models.

  • I need to mention this because while for most people it wouldn't be a huge issue, or not even something someone might even think about immediately. But I want to point out, that if you're playing a female character then you know the models for clothes differ from the male models based on the fact that you have b***s.

The problem with this is, that when you're buying an outfit the default preview defaults to the item for the male model. So while you think you're buying this cool jacket, when you put it on, it looks completely different from the one you bought.

    This is a major issue.

It's cosmetic, and it might not be a priority right now, but it's definitely a major issue that needs to be solved. Female characters should see the female model of the clothing they're buying, not the male if they're not buying a dress.

But let me be very clear here: Not every female character wants to wear a dress, and they're literally the only thing that look like the 'right' preview at first and the same when a female character puts it on. While many of the other clothes show one model when you purchase it, and give you a different one that you're not expecting.

There should be a male and female preview for the clothes that pops up in the shop menu (before you purchase) based on the gender of your pirate. Or the worn models need not change based on gender.

Again, this is something most people might consider to be unimportant, but if the game wants to appeal to all, then certain considerations should be made.

I also want to point out that I'm not trying to start anything. This is just hopefully pointing out this issue, so that in the future, female players and female characters don't waste gold on items that aren't going to look like the same item when worn, that they just bought.

  • Just to clarify, I don't at all believe that this particular thing was intentional, or meant to alienate anyone. At most, it's likely an oversight on the dev's parts.

  • This is definitely a problem but it's only half the problem. I'd be thrilled if they put in a system where the clothes were simply displayed on a similar body type but I have to ask first... Why are the designs so different? Why does my pirate having b***s mean the collar goes from 2 inches below the neck to literally showing off a ton of cleavage? I'm not against cleavage shirts! That's fine. But it's so disappointing to buy a shirt that looks one way on the male model and then looks nothing like that on you. I argue that cosmetic or not, this is hugely important because cosmetics play a huge role in this game. So, please Rare, give us a proper preview and maybe give us options on how we'd like to wear a item, cleavage or not, because I'm afraid to waste anymore of my time or coin after seeing the hunter shirt looking nothing like the preview I saw.

    Oh boy.

  • I agreed with you untill you called them sexist... It was probably an oversight not a political stance.

  • You know, if you read my posts. Instead of skipping over them, I did clarify that I don't believe it was a political stance, and was in fact likely an oversight. I was pointing out how it looks.

  • and once again no one will speak up for the fat pirates with over sized buttons on their jackets

I actually didn't notice that. It's a valid point too, it also literally proves what I said. It's not something a lot of people think about, unless they're people who look for that sort of thing.

I'm not saying Rare is at fault, or anything, nor am I pointing fingers. It's a legit concern, and some people might legit not buy the game for reasons like that. Regardless of the reasons or there lack of. Some people get really serious about things like that.

I'm only pointing it out because it was pointed out to me, and I believe that it's a little unfair that the models in the shop don't preview the right models for female characters.

I'll also re-iterate that I'm fully in the belief that it was an oversight, and nothing mean-spirited or stereotyped.

  • @onasaki

I think you're absolutely right about this both that it is a problem and that it doesn't need to be taken as anything political or pc, it's just quite frustrating not to be able to see clothing items on the gender model which corresponds to your character and a little disappointing when they don't turn out as expected, also.. to add in here those with extreme proportions, lets say :)

  • In what other games can we dress male characters up in traditionally female clothing and vice versa? Not enough I reckon, lets not have a go at one of the developers that tries to get it right.

If we have the time and the inclination to create and read posts like this it can only be a good thing, and mean that there is nothing more serious bothering people.

    It's your wording matey.
With respect please allow me to elaborate, I do not want to go far off-topic here but here goes:
    You literally use the phrase:

    This is extremely sexist.

    and go on to say:

if the game wants to appeal to all, then certain considerations should be made.

Sure you admit after the matter that your intention isn't as overarching as all that. And you express belief it's an oversight likely.
But this is after remarking that they're participating in sexist activity definable as: relating to or characterized by prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, on the basis of sex.

This isn't sexism, it's lack of proper implementation to be sure, but it's not sexist. We're discussing a preview of the WRONG ITEM and though gender seems to be the data point where the incorrect data is presented that's simply related to cause of the issue not the issue itself. Just as if the issue were that you look at red colored items and you buy them and they're blue... it's a matter of the wrong thing being displayed.

    That said...

I simply feel the entire preview function should be overhauled. I want to see the previews but I want to rotate my character freely and at my pace and have ability to angle the character from all directions. Obviously I would want what I will wear to be reflected properly and not be the wrong version represented.

It's good you bring this up. I haven't noticed it because I don't use a female avatar so clearly, based on what your suggesting the issue is, I'd never encounter. Presuming your not incorrect, this should be fixed and should be fixable easily.

  • @blooddoll22

To be fair, yeah, it was pretty early in the morning when I made that original post. Hadn't had much coffee. There's no edit function for the forums, so that's why I posted the clarification right after. But you're right, I didn't word it correctly.

  • @onasaki You're able to edit your post using the ship's wheel at the bottom right, it was a bit funky for a while where edits didn't show but it should be fixed now, if you wish to do so :)

  • Done, and done. Though it'll look weird now, with all the other posts referencing the removed part. But meh. The feedback is out there!

I'll remember to drink more coffee before posting next time.

  • @onasaki Thank you for not freaking out when I remarked. It wasn't my intention to call anyone out or cause upset or drive the topic down the wrong rabbit hole. I just wanted to express what I read and how I read it. I respect your concerns, but in this side topic I do think it's important not to muddy the waters of perception. Sexism is a serious issue that needs to go away and not exist as most -ism's in our world should do. I just really didn't want to see the thread get derailed. And my intention was not to disrespect or challenge you, simply showcase the reason it could be read as such.

    Thank you for seeing that.

    Back on topic.

I feel that the preview system isn't quite where it should be anyhow. Noting the apparent lack of ability to see the proper assignment of clothing presented, there's more going on that annoys me. It may not be within technical boundaries but if it is I really would enjoy seeing the ability to rotate and zoom my avatar while wearing certain things. I would also like to see this in the stores specifically. I might be remembering it wrong, but I don't know that your character is modeled in the store preview, just the item itself is. To me that is an oversight.

I also wish that we could lock a previewed item as worn in the preview and then lock varied combinations of items and from there see how things look when matched up with other things... BEFORE BUYING...

Basically I guess what I am saying is I appreciate the preview system... but I think it deserves more attention. Something I've felt about as related to many aspects of the game. We need less new stuff and more depth added to what we do have. The most recent barrel UI is just one example of "let's focus on getting that right" before new stuff gets added that inevitably breaks things anyhow lol.

  • @onasaki I have to edit my posts about 80 times a day I wouldn’t worry about it xD

  • @onasaki Hear, hear! I couldn’t agree more. I’ll add that it’s also frustrating when your chest wrap shows through an otherwise awesome shirt. Or worse, when your knickers show under your dress skirt. And by the way, why aren’t there skirts? And corsets, for crying in the grog?

    I could go on...

  • @genuine-heather I have to agree with corsets! My pirate has been wanting one since launch.

If so remember correctly though adding more options for female clothing was brought up and said to be in the works by the developers. If memory serves I believe it was in the first weekly stream :)
