Scrap the Merchant Alliance Altogether?

  • Hmmm...this might be a controversial suggestion, or perhaps not... because I'm only making this suggestion because I've never... EVER... heard a single person say they enjoy the Merchant Alliance quests..not one...NADA...

    Scrap the Merchant Alliance quests.
Why keep something that very few people, if any, actually enjoy doing in your game?!?

Keep the general features however, being able to catch animals and sell them for gold is fine...but remove the tedious mandatory fetch quest err...quests...

EXPAND the concept into something unique, perhaps custom trading posts or stores?

You could use gold to expand your own personal trading post, buy a cooking pot for X amount of gold...now captured animals like chickens and pigs could be cooked and used for personal consumption OR sold as consumables to other players... they'd have some sort of benefit, like temporary increased max health ... Or why not buy an alchemy table, turn different types of snake venom into consumable postions...making you temporary immune to snake bites, or posion...or how about attire crafting...make pig skin shoes, or snake belts....Rare would have to add more to world to collect, but it would be something that could constantly evolve and something to build..

Heck, even a Pokémon style "gotta catch em all" sub game would be far superior to the current quest structure! That could actually be fun, add more animal variety, capture at your own pace, maybe even trade with other players...recieve a reward when completed

It's my highest levelled faction LOL

  • While not my highest, I do enjoy them. I prefer pig wrestling to waves of skellies or digging in the dirt.

  • I'm currently 36/37/50.
And I still do more Merchant Voyages than any of the others.

    I love those voyages.

  • No substitute when trying to make a quick and easy buck, loves me my MA :D

  • I enjoy Merchant Alliance quests. I like the flexibility of being able to find your livestock wherever you like. You never know what you’ll find along the way, going from island to island looking for chickens, pigs and/or snakes. It’s a challenge keeping the pigs fed while scouring islands for more animals or whatnot. Delivering your livestock to a specific outpost can be a challenge if other ships are lurking around your destination.

I wouldn’t want to do exclusively only one, or even two, of the faction quests. I like the variety of having all three unique quest types, including Merchant Alliance voyages.

  • Why I love MA voyages:

    • You know roughly what gold you are going to get before you set out.
    • There's a lot more strategy in planning out your trip. You are best checking out the outpost you're heading to before picking up your cargo.
    • Even then, you have to go to a specific outpost and that might be occupied - meaning more risk. With other factions, if it's occupied, you just go to another.
    • There's a satisfaction in knowing that even if you are robbed/sunk, your cargo is worth a lot less to the other player than it would have been for you.
    • They're very chilled to do when you're soloing in the middle of the day with a cup of coffee on hand.
  • I would enjoy them if I actually
Made any merchant decisions myself. As is it’s pretty boring to just be given a cage and pointed at an outpost, but atleast you have the decision of what island to look for the animals.

I agree with the main point of this post, which is that fetch quests of any kind are a lazy excuse for real merchanting, and really not a satisfying way to provide the items for piracy, I think items this easily obtainable should be in the game, but some
Depth to the merchanting or even a cosmetic item trading economy would be cool. The game is way to simplistic for no good reason especially considering it is an open world Wild West style pvp game, there should be reasons to steal and also punishments for it, etc.

Some simple examples are that stolen chests can’t be sold for a certain time after theft, or skulls that are stolen give a bonus.

The lack of any incentives such as this across the board in the game is baffling considering how easy it should be to make it that way. It’s like they created the art assets for things and just throw them in without further design thought...

  • Yup, I'm right there and my wife is too.. it's the most fun. In fact she only started her interest in the Sea of Thieves BECAUSE of the 'cute piggies' and spent her first month talking in silly voices when they'd get hungry and she'd feed them...

We still usually assure we carry an extra animal on board, a Golden Chicken to be precise, for luck naturally!

Though I'm all for streamlining and broadening the merchants voyages - small things like alterations to the pig's feeding habits (or outright elimination therof), ability to regain lost coops/cages/baskets without total loss of the voyage itself, and more... sure.. whatever you want man no idea is a bad idea if simply presented as an idea.

But your definitely not in the same boat as many players. Not by a far distance. in your personal experience perhaps, maybe all your friends hate 'em, maybe the players you meet in the majority hate 'em, but overall? Naw, I think it's appreciated.

In fact, in the higher levels it's the easiest one to deal with accepting. OoS skellies get obnoxious to deal with in the 40+ range and god forbid they spawn in the pit of sunken grove and be waves of gold... oh my! But a level 49 or post 50 Mechants? Bah.. easy peasy...

In fact soloists seem to enjoy merchants as well, choice of pick up locations, you get to explore islands for neat random looty things like messages in a bottle or random junk chests, etc. To cite my Wife again - that's literally why she plays.

Sure she enjoys doing Athena's with me because for the entire game play since launch she only wears a hat and gloves and boots. She HATES the clothing options. We tease her daily about "putting on some clothes woman" in our best misogynist impressions. She just smiles as her pirate toothlessly grins. But the Athenas outfit? She likes it. She's only able to play short hours late at night... but she gets her ranks up there. She's actually wearing pants now!

So what does she do when she's not sailing alongside me and my pals? She's solo on a sloop catching animals and cooing at them until turn in. She's looking for shinies, and having a heart attack leaping off still sailing vessels when she finds them often forgetting to raise sail or drop anchor in her excitement. Sometimes she does treasure hoarders since that's pretty chill as well and she knows she needs to balance her leveling or it'll get to a place where the things she enjoys doing provide no value. She even has been hitting OoS solo which is only in effort to get it over with and done ahead of the others so she never needs look at a skeleton again...... or at least not until cursed sails heh.

Frankly, she doesn't even need voyages.. she just likes sailing and exploring islands even after all this time since launch! Like I said, she likes finding shiney things! She even almost quit the game entirely when during "banana-gate" they removed shinies! She played the HECK out of State of Decay 2 during that period. Once they were added back in.... well she returned!

So I don't agree with your assessment buddy. Sorry. I don't think merchants or any voyage type are perfect and there is room for improvements in each. But... that's how the winds blow my man.

  • If we are eliminating stuff that 'no one' likes, why not PvP? or PvE? or Shipwrecks? or Sharks?

depending on who you ask, you are bound to find someone that dislikes something. doesn't mean it can just be removed.

If you don't like doing something, don't do it.

LOL'd at this. Like she just recovered from some horrible physical or emotional trauma:
"I saw her smile yesterday, and she's wearing pants again!"

  • Although I'm not a fan of the Merchant Alliance I wouldn't want them to be scrapped. They are an essential part of what the 18th century was about and if they were removed I feel it would remove a big piece of that 'new world' feel with it. What The Merchant Alliance needs is to be given an expansion and the option for multiple objectives. This will help with the tediousness of levelling up with them.

  • I don't think they should scrap it but they should expand on it. There should be a market for animals at different outposts that changes throughout your session. There are tons of suggestions people have made to make Merchant Alliance have more variables and ways of progressing this trading company.

Remove it, I can't say I agree with that. I do enjoy it and it is the best way to make money to be honest.

  • Creators point is good, but - @rabiddragoon15 Exactly this. Somehow expanding the possibilities in serving the Merchant Alliance would actually make someone go for that.
Additionally I have the feeling that those quests are actually the hardest/take the longest time.

  • I love merchant! A sailor at heart, I prefer honorable trade over petty thievery any day of the week!
