Fifteen (15) years of the greatest pirate

  • Ahoy mates!

On July 9th 2003 one of the greatest pirates ever was introduced. I was only a kid back when it released, but somehow the character became a role model to me. Throughout my teens I played a game called 'Puzzle Pirates' where my pirate name was based on this particular pirate.

The wittiness, planned foolishness and overall charm makes him one of the most beloved pirates out there. I am, of course, talking about the one and only: Captain Jack Sparrow.

Fifteen years ago today, on July 9th 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl was released in cinemas and our lives would never be the same again.

While we can all argue over how good or bad the sequels are (I'll fight anyone that argues Dead Man's Chest and At Worlds End were bad), it's a much beloved franchise. The amount of people you find on the seas referencing this movie is astonishing. Sometimes you'll find a crew that's playing the theme song through the new speaking trumpet and we all sailed the Black Pearl when the Hungering Deep was released.

Love it, hate it, but here's to one of the greatest franchises Disney has ever created!

  • I'm sorry to contradict you sir, and I mean to take nothing away from Captain Jack Sparrow, but Guybrush Threepwood is without question the best pirate of all time.

  • He is, without a doubt, the worst pirate I have ever seen...

  • @reedski Ah, but you have heard of him!

  • Ironically I only even saw the first one growing up, living in a house with sisters that swooned over him lol. I just couldn't fill my pirate fix so I marathoned them all and was quite surprised. 1 was great, 2 was decent 3 was my least favorite but I really liked 4. It was nice to have a good closure for the characters from the original and I laugh because Keira Knightly probably got paid a million dollars to wear a dress in a field for 30 seconds. I still haven't scratched my Pirate Itch, Sadly there isn't much quality pirate material so may be watching Black Sails again.

  • Why thank ye Jack...

...oh not you. We named the monkey Jack.

    Hector Barbossa-1
    Jack Sparrow-0

  • @murkrage but Monkey Island is nearly 30 ;)

(also as an added bonus, has not even a mention of Depp)

  • I heard a rumour that the character of Captain Jack Sparrow was actually based on one Captain Blubber. Obviously, they changed a lot and tried to make it their own thing, but they just couldn't quite replicate that raw exuding charisma properly.

  • @murkrage The created an awesome character in the first movie. A pirate who looks goofy, uncoordinated, and downright stupid but is, in reality, always thinking a few steps ahead and great at improvising.

Then they spend the entire rest of the series making him look dumb except for a brief flashback to when he first acquired the Black Perl....

Depp based his portrayal of Jack on a whole bunch of things. Funnily enough, the character we know is not the character that was written. It's all Depp, and a whole lot of Verbinski.

I agree with you, but only for the final movie. Jack is his true self in the original trilogy, by Gore Verbinski, but after that starts losing his touch. They completely messed up with Dead Men Tell No Tales if you ask me. The Jack in that movie is more like the Mad Hatter if anything.

  • At least the Dread Pirate Roberts got the girl.

  • I saw that movie at the cinema, now I feel old. Thanks alot. 👴🤣
