  • Afaik it will be a Banjo-Kazooie figure head for ships in game as well as other irl loots. Here is a useful link to show what is upcoming.

  • @ixxolos did they mention anything about the banjo

  • @ixxolos I read "Bear and bird is the word... are the words" and I got scared as I imagined they were adding bears to the animals in the game. I just pictured me running for my life with a bear at my heels.

    I like that figurehead though!

  • I watched a stream last night (Rare employee streaming) He said more instruments MAY venture in in the far future.

  • @mad-jack-ketch what does that mean we wont be getting another instrument in along time

  • @roughleech03117 Well probably not. We've recently received the drum.

  • The banjo as we know it today didn't exist in the early 18th century, but its relatives did. I wouldn't mind seeing a period-appropriate version of the banjo. But I'd much rather have a fiddle!

  • I’m still crossing my fingers for it. Would love it in game sooner rather than later. The article Rare posted mentioning the figurehead was directly relating to the banjo kazooie anniversary so there wasn’t much point in mentioning a banjo instrument for SoT’s.

Not long to find out though so here’s hoping!

  • @roughleech03117 As far as the article states we will not be seeing the instrument added for the anniversary at least.

  • @genuine-heather I'm actually not trying to troll this ... but honest question: Did or have we been given a specific date range? For that matter do we have a greater universe we know we're connected too? A name of the planet? Or anything like that?

I do not have the Lore Book, all I know is that we are part of a larger world and migrated to 'the Sea of Thieves' to avoid lives less well lived elsewhere and apparently... it's a generally undiscovered realm we're in and we are the pioneers.

That's about all that I know aside from the lore that has been presented in art and iconography in the game.

So if there is a better source for lore beyond the book will never buy... I'd love to know of it.

For all I actually know we're in the 37th century and rebuilding after a h*******t that devastated the Indian Ocean area and this is all just humanity rebuilding...

With that lack of substance in mind.. why not a Banjo?

  • A Dutch gaming website stated that the Banjo Kazooie figurehead will be available for one month, for 1998 gold.

  • Wonder if we will get other tie-ins? like MA voyages or weekly events to capture red squirrels

  • Doesnt it look to serious for b&k ?

I'll answer your last question first. Why not a banjo? I have no problem with a banjo. But I definitely feel it shouldn't look like a modern banjo. It should be an older relative of the banjo to best fit with the genre and time period. The banjo as we know it today evolved sometime in the early 1800s. Earlier variations of the banjo absolutely existed in the Caribbean in the 18th century. They just looked a bit different and had different (but similar) names.

Now on to your questions about the game universe...

Anything is possible. Clearly the game world is fictional, and takes place outside our reality. But it seems equally clear that the game is modeled after popular pirate lore found in books, movies and other media. Almost all such lore is derived from the Golden Age of Piracy, a period of time between roughly 1650 and 1720. This is reflected in the style and technology of the game world.

So I don't have anything against banjos, per say. I just want to see them implemented in a way that blends well with the game world. That said, I'd still rather have fiddles, or fifes. :)

  • @genuine-heather Since the availability for the Pirate Legends have been around there has been a stringed banjo-like instrument shown in game. In the pirate legend's den you can see one of the musicians there playing it. Additionally the concept art book did reveal a fiddle/violin as well. Perhaps like weapons they will be able to be swapped out.

  • @genuine-heather I think the art dept would agree.

Though I personally wouldn't be put off by even the inclusion of an electric guitar! If handled with appropriate humor and style.

What I gather from your position is basically a request that the art and lore be consistent.

I don't think that is a bad request... in fact as I said the Art dept would likely argue the same!

But therein does lie a difference of perspective even if on topic we overall agree... I wouldn't care if Spaceships! end up in the game...

as long as it was properly introduced to the lore... maintained appropriate feel and implementation... and was not distracting from the pirate feel....

how that could be included and maintain the integrity of our games world.... I can't easily remark, but even Banjo-Kazooie managed to pull of some really weird things that all somehow fit into the world...

I'm sure if handled right, even a banjo would help keep the game on pace.

I worry more about things like the banjo-Kazooie figureheads and such... I prefer a more sinister world of pirates than SoT provides but i've settled since it's all in good theme and presented acceptably.

I think even a improperly timed banjo as instrument could be implemented well. That's why we pay them right? To figure out what we cant or wont hehe..

anyhow i'm rambling as always... my opening sentence is all i meant to offer to be honest.

  • @genuine-heather The rainbow flag wasn't period specific either but we have that now don't we.. They didn't even have enough dyes for that yet..

Jk, I just like stiring the kettle every once in while. Mwahahaha >:)

They do have the banjo in a certain hideout though.. Surprised they won't release it. :(

To answer your question. We actually have! It is actually part of our world, our planet, and in the age of piracy. The Sea of Thieves is found in a wrinkle of the map, which was divided up into three pieces, as shown in the beginning cutscene as you enter the game. Those who enter the Sea of Thieves have made a final decision, as the Devil's Shroud prevents all who enter from ever leaving. It is somewhere close to Isla Mosquito, as shown in the map you can hold in the tutorial at the very beginning. The lore book doesn't really talk about geography or time period (I read it myself), so all these tidbits I got are from the game itself and the devs' words in part.

I don't think skeletons rising from the dead carrying gun powder barrels existed back then either. We'll be fine with a Banjo.

Well they all blew up so maybe there's just no evidence left ;)
