Brigantine Questions

  • Well since the brigantine has been confirmed, there's a couple questions I'd like to ask

1: Is the forward mast to have two sails or one?

The reason I ask is because we've seen the trailer, and the brigantine in that scene has only one sail on the forward mast, even though it is the same height as the mizzen mast. Also, the forward mast has a second boom positioned beneath the crow's nest as if a sail is meant to be there, but perhaps it was shot away.

2: How many cannons does it have?

When it comes to a middle ground between the sloop and the galleon, cannons are the only thing that cannot be split evenly. The galleon has a max of 4 players and has 4 cannons/broadside. However the sloop has a Max player count of 2 but only has one cannon/broadside. So will the brigantine have two cannons on each side or three on each side? I looked as hard as I could and couldn't figure this out with the footage we've been given.

  • A better question is:
Why did Rare add a 3-Man ship before they added a 6-Man Ship?

You can already have a pseudo 3-Man by just have 3 people in a closed Galleon. I’ve made a lot of friends playing this game and I can’t play with a lot of then because I can only play with 3 at a time. Let me play with more people before you start making ships for smaller crews.

  • A 3 man dedicated ship is exactly what is needed right now.

A 6 man will follow, as will other variations. But 3 men on a galleon is seriously hard work. 3 on a sloop is / would be OP.

Most people struggle to get on to the game with anymore than 3 friends at a time I’d guess. Makes sense to add this boat next.

  • If the Brig (just going to shorten it right now) is going to be nimble compared to the galleon and has only one lower deck like the sloop I'm going to guess you'd not want more then 2 cannons. I's not a bad Idea to have one person repairing or steering because you've not nimbleness.

It if goes more into the direction of the galleon with more decks and bulky steering I'd say 3 cannons because you've got ample time between plotting a manouver and before you have to repair to shoort with all 3 cannons.

    My guess is as follows:
    Sloop: 1-2 people
Quick nimble ship, 1 cannon because 1 person steers and one shoots.
    Brig: 2-3 people
Still nimble but less so then a sloop but majesticly nimble compared to a Galleon 2 cannons.
    New Ship: 3-4 people
In between a Brig and Galleon 3 cannons 2 decs etc.
    Galleon: 4-5 people
Big bulky slow to start up but fast and hard to stop when it gets going. 4 Cannons 2 decs.
    Man-O-war: 5-6 people
    5 Cannons 3 decs?

The Galleon is great with 4 people but the cannon placement makes me think it was designed for 5 people but balancing made rare remove 1 person but not the cannon.

Tbh galleon is too big for just 3 people...4 is a must on galleon, at least from my perspective and others I'm normally playing with. We've been desperately waiting for 3-man ship so we can play together, my friends and me that is.

Also if you can play with only 3 people at a time isn't 3-man ship perfect solution for you as well? Unless you meant 3 as in you + 3 others. In that case ignore my question.

  • The advent of new ships will make a huge difference to this game. For the absolute good!

But can we have some variety on skeletons, sooner rather than later, as trash mobs please Rare?

    Fishing!

My only concern with the new 3 person ship is that it may actually kill the sloop in the game. The sloop users (such as myself much of the time) are always arguing for more cannons on the sloop, so if it is possible to run the Brigantine with 2 people, and it has more firepower, than why would people use the sloop? I hope they make it challenging enough to use for 2 people so they will not be tempted to replace the sloop with it...

  • @markglow

I hope it’ll be like the galleon is now for 3 man. Difficult!

It’s how I imagine it to be.

  • @allamerican-440 I do wish they'd stuck to a more Brigantine style - Main Mast at the back, taller of the two with one sail (if they're not going to include a gaff sail). The one in the trailer just looks odd to me with the crow's nest up front with one sail.

  • @hynieth my take on the 4 cannons per side is you have 3 men firing cannons with the option to launch a crew member out of the empty 4th cannon...at least that is how we use them currently.

  • @bran-the-ent I didn't notice that. I assumed the crows nest would be on the aft mast because it had 2 sails lol.

  • @xcalypt0x Yeah, no... it's on the foremast. You can barely make it out in the trailer, but you can also see that the changeable flag is also on the foremast.

  • @bran-the-ent yeahhh... I don't like it lol

  • @xcalypt0x Just looks... off.

  • Personally, I sail 3 on a gally all the time with no problems, so once the new ship is here, I'll probably use the sloop when I'm solo, and the brig for 2 or 3 man crews
