Is there a time limit to use the Fort key?
Skeleton Fort Key
@simplkindoman - If so I'm yet to encounter it, I've held onto a key for over 3hrs.
Wee tip; if you have a key and a new fort activates, you can run in and loot it. It'll leave the skull cloud active so if you're quick enough you'll be left alone as you leave as approaching ships will not know you have the loot.
@xcalypt0x Seems Rare could address this by simply eliminating the fort key and just automatically opening the vault upon killing the fort captain.
@simplkindoman I mean, they could but I don't see why that's necessary. Plus, I really enjoy chasing and being chased with the key.

tartansnake-8 But if you use one key for another fort the fort with skeletons remaining will still produce a key so whoever gets it just needs to visit forts til they find one locked. So why do this? Seems trolly. You're correct, if someone takes down the fort that's robbed they’ll gain a new key. If you have time I wrote a wee story where we had a galleon camp at a fort for over 3 hours; The Battle For Shark Fin Camp.
I’ve also come across a key after sinking a ship so held onto it until a new fort activated as they were camping at the one they completed. So I wouldn't say trolly, just being a pirate :-)
