Mermaid Whistle

  • Ahoy!

I would love to see something like a Mermaid Whistle implemented into the game. There are times where the Mermaids give your position away, or they're way out in the distance. The whistle could help reposition them to get closer, go away, or even throw the enemies off. It doesn't necessarily have to be a whistle, but I feel like this would be very helpful.

    What do you think?

  • I don't agree with being able to control them like that, but I would like to call them any time I like rather then them appearing like they do.

I think blowing into a conch shell would be pretty cool to summon a mermaid that plays a tune before the mermaid comes along.

The suggestion of a conch shell has been thrown around a few times on the forums -

  • @havcn for me, something like this should never exist. Checking for mermaids is a part of the process now for a lot of people, a tactic such as outpost camping would be unavoidable as none of them would use the whistle. That stowaway you never noticed would now be a lot harder to detect. Checking for mermaids is as important as angling sails (imo), it is a part of the makeup of the game, i agree we need more stealth, but not this way.

  • @solidsnakemig I see your side of it, but maybe have a recall cooldown of some sort. It's kind of annoying when they're very far. Maybe not have a recall option, just the call (whistle, shell, etc)

  • @havcn so we can see your side, how would you personally use this whistle, what would no mermaid enable you to do?

  • @katttruewalker That's great, I really do hope they implement it since there are others also suggesting it.

  • @solidsnakemig I would retract the mermaid so I can board ships easier. I'd never camp an outpost, so maybe have the option to recall the mermaid, but not at an outpost or fort. I like to cannon or lunge myself out a lot, so having the mermaid come up every time cuts the option of boarding a ship in the middle of a fight.

  • @havcn i can get behind this, its just i see a lot of posts regarding outpost spawning and the like, and the mermaid literally is the only indication we have right now.

  • @solidsnakemig I hear ya, but like I said, maybe have certain areas like an outpost or fort off limits for the whistle/conch or w/e it may be. Some votes would be appreciated so we can at least get some devs thinking about it.

Actually, I rather disagree in part. I liked the idea initially... Then I considered the value as an alert to outpost campers, remaining sunken crews, and so on.

Stealth is cool. I think we'd all get a kick out of more stealth in the game, when we are the ones applying it's use against others.

But I feel many would despise the increased stealth when applied against them.

Also, as an alert it not every crew will notice it. So, it's not a guaranteed alert excluding those clever enough to pay attention. To me that's the key... If your paying attention, you won't be surprised by the guy who swims on your ship or jumps out from behind the merchants tent... but if your not paying attention....

well... I sharpen my sword daily... (and really need to fix my hip fire wink reflexes)

So I guess I'm on the fence here. I appreciate it's value as an alert... but do like the idea of increased stealth ability.

  • @havcn have you seen the gamertags being hidden whilst underwater change coming? Your example of ship boarding comes to mind because yes they would see your mermaid but they will no longer see your name, i feel the mermaid is almost the balance. You have personally split my opinion tbh. I am for the mermaid ‘summoning’ but with the fort/outposts limitations you mentioned.

  • @blooddoll22

    Haha!

I agree, I like the idea that sneaky pirates might be given away by the presence of the mermaid.. so wouldn't really want to see this as an option.

I also think that it sort of works alongside what we know of the lore of the world, that mermaids rescuing pirates is a deal struck by those who inhabited the world before and perhaps they don't really want to be doing it in the first place, but at the very least they have no investment either way in who they rescue and trying to 'summon' them on a whim might have unforeseen consequences.

  • @katttruewalker is this a very thinly veiled hint at the mermaid enemies coming?

We get a new item allowing us to summon the mermaids, but the majority don’t appreciate themselves being used as an Uber for pirates so they rebel, a few loyal to the pirates remain (the current mermaid system) but the majority are out for pirate blood...

  • I wouldn't mind keeping the current mermaid spawning mechanics as they are. However, we could add an item in, such as the conch, to summon another mermaid next to us. It could be on a timer of some sort.

The downside to having this new tool? There's a 10% chance it spawns a kraken instead. LoL

  • @solidsnakemig Yeah, it'll have to be limited, but it'll still help in the long run. Thanks for the upvote, btw!

  • @blooddoll22 Lol, love the GIF. I did mention that maybe there should be a limit to where you can and cannot use it. Outposts and Forts should be off limits. Other than that, we should be able to call or recall them on a cooldown.

  • U want stealth? Eliminate mermaids all together...no smoke.
    Wait..what? U say.
Sure now it's man overboard and another shared world adventure issue to enjoy , or NOT.
Private crews, friends will likely retrieve their crewmates in an acceptable amount of time.
Crazy...sure.. but solo sailors like myself are loving the challenge of this game , and I bet I could rig something up so if I fell overboard my anchor dropped automatically.. or not..

Sadly not... Deckhands have about as much clue as the rest of the community on what's next :D

    I'm also slightly divided here..

Would be nice to be able to summon a mermaid for an additional cost...

BUT...Falling of/failing a jump in a combat situaiton leading to you getting in the water and your ship out of reach but not enough to get a mermaid... Is Extremely annoying.. But it would also make you think about your actions.. and consequenses.. being punished for making a poorly timed decision that ends up you floating.. Is only right if you ask me.

  • @katttruewalker i assumed as much lol, a pirate can dream...
